The objective of this synthesis paper is to present my readers what I have achieved during my graduate program at American Sentinel University (ASU). It assimilates all my course work, clinical experience, and nursing practice during this time, which presents a complete picture of how I accomplished my Master of
Graduate Education My interviewee obtained her Master’s in Informatics at the University of Phoenix in 2013. Transitioning into the Master’s program was seamless since this school was where she obtained her BSN. The online route was most efficient and that is the route she pursued. The University of Phoenix Master of Science in nursing degree program is accredited by the Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (University of Phoenix, 2014). The goal of this program is to equip nurses to function in leadership roles in a variety of settings. Additionally, nursing theories and evidence-based practices are fundamental guidelines in this program that will help shape the future of nursing thus impacting the health care system (University of Phoenix, 2014). More specifically, the informatics program afford students to gain knowledge in data management and information technology in regard to the health care setting (University of Phoenix, 2014).
The role of an NI is categorized as a non-clinical advanced nurse. The use of core competencies is an integral part of delivering standardized, measurable, quality healthcare in this day and age. Informatics is a relatively new addition to the APN, and nursing education but an integral part of delivering quality healthcare to patients. In 2010, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) mandated that nurses be key players in transforming and developing the infrastructure that is needed for efficient health information technology (HIT), thus, improving the quality of health care. Presently, informatics is a requirement for all APN 's. In prior decades, informatics was in the embryonic stages of development, but in 1992, the ANA recognised it as a speciality thursting NI to the forefront of nursing education and integerating informatics into the the very core of nursing cirriculum.
How Biomedical Informatics is Transforming Healthcare System in the United States: Its Advantages, Challenges, and Suggestions to Address the Challenges By Florence F. Odekunle
In this paper I will be discussing how as a new office manager what factor pertaining to health care information need to be considered. Some of these factors are legislation, organization structure and flow of information, billing, accrediting bodies, standards, monitoring and assessing practice to HIPAA.
Answer: The first section to be filled out on the CMS 1500 form in boxes one through 13 include patient demographic information as well as insurance information. This information is captured to ensure the proper claim is associated with the correct patient.
D.B was a restaurant manager who left the business in (2005) to attend nursing school at the University of South Florida (USF) where she obtained her BSN degree. While working in the Coronary Intensive Care Unit (CICU), she went to the University of Tampa for the ARNP but did not like it. In 2013 she went on to pursue a Master’s of Science degree in Healthcare Informatics (HCI) at the University of Central Florida (UCF). D.B is currently working as a per-diem for a prestigious private hospital in South Florida where she is currently a Super User/User Support for the Epic Systems. She also work for a nursing travel Agency and travelled throughout the country working as an Epic Super User or User Support for various hospitals during “go live-live implementation.” Although she obtained her MS-HCI, surprisingly she is not working in this job
“By 2015, use of a certified electronic health record (EHR) is mandated under the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act” (Kelly & Tazbir, 2014, p. 129).Electronic health records comes from the electronic medical records data and where nurses document the patient’s care that has the ability to move from one provider to another. “The main purpose of documentation is facilitating information flow that supports safety, quality, and continuity of care” (Kelly & Tazbir, 2014, p. 131). Electronic health records also improves the quality of confidential health information as compared to the paper system. Informatics is defined as “the use of information technology as a communication and information-gathering tool
My understanding and definition of healthcare informatics (HI) developed gradually from the very basic to a more integrated concept of HI. In the 1990’s when I started nursing, I associated nursing informatics solely with the use of the computer for order entry by the unit clerk. However, through the years, the concept of nursing informatics dawned on me in “bits and pieces” (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2015, p. 7). I had worked in three hospitals that utilized different programs; some were more advanced or had the capability to interphase with the other programs utilized in the same hospital. While others, had very limited functionality or were not maximized as intended. In the first two hospitals I worked, the physicians were very adamant
Healthcare Informatics The satellite clinic will be provided in information technology as PMH. The EMR or EHR is very important in ameliorating the quality of care. The EMR would be implemented with its meaningful use. The EMR implementation and its meaningful use will augment the patient safety and it would ameliorate the quality of care. Therefore; the Pocahontas County Community will have the same quality of care as the PMH. “Implementing and using EHR systems in a meaningful way is likely to have a net cost over the several years, especially for those who do not yet have robust EHR systems in place and in regular use” (Kudyba S. P. ‘2010’). The same author said: “By quality we mean the six elements described by the IOM in its ‘Quality Chasm’ report: care that is consistently patient centered, effective, safe, timely, efficient, and equitable.”
Aisha, I enjoyed reading your post. I think you stated the outcome of the the degree as leding to a greater understanding of the importance of integrating health care informatics with nursing practice and how it will improve patient safety and the delivery of care well. I was courious after reading your post and the post of others as to what and how many nurse informatiscists get certified, and is it necessary to get or keep a job?. I was surprised to find out that as of 2010 there where only a total of 779 actively certified ANCC informatics nurses certified as RN-BC (Sensmeier, 2012). Some of the main reason for gaining certification after gaining a degree includes showing others that you understand how to apply the scope and standards of
Electronic Health Records (EHR) provides an efficient way for the medical staff to get access to and view detailed patient health information and physician documentation. The online Journal of Nursing states, the digital wave of electronic records needs to be embraced to improve patient care and healthcare disparities of Americans (Sheridan, 2012). There are several benefits that come can from viewing and accessing one’s electronic record such as the ability to view and verify one’s prenatal history and medical diagnosis, estimated date of delivery (EDD), and view the documented date of a patient’s last menstrual period (LMP). All these benefits can aid in meeting quality care measures by assuring that the best care and safety practices are
