A normal or healthy BMI for an adult human from ages 20 and above is in the range of 18.5 to 24.9. You can determine if an adult has a healthy BMI by using the formula BMI= (Weight in Pounds/ (Height in inches^2)). (1) The healthy weight range differs for children and teens because at such at young because age, sex, and height have a much greater impact on determining obesity (2). For babies under the age of two medical professionals use the WHO standards to assess whether or not the baby is obese. BMI is a great and effect method for majority of the general public to have their weight assessed by doctors to help the medical professionals identify if someone is at an unhealthy weight. The only problem with the BMI scale is that sometimes it is ineffective with …show more content…
People who are older tend to have more body fat “consequently at any given weight older people, on average, have substantially more body fat than young adults.”(5) This statement also reiterates the point that that someone who is older and is trying to have a baby would have to watch her weight more carefully than a person at the age of 20. This means that our perception of a healthy weight is altered due to the fact that as people age they generally tend to weigh more. The relationship between bodyweight and conception is shown in how well someone who is at a healthy weight has a greater chance of having a baby compared to that of someone who is at an unhealthy weight, this is because the hormone levels in people at a healthy body weight are not negatively effected and they are also more likely to conceive. People who have excess body fat are usually more unlikely to have a baby because the body fat will have a negative effect on the overall process of reproduction, both males and females who are planning to conceive should try to obtain a healthy weight.
2.5 Body Mass Index,BMI, is a measure of our weight compared to our height. BMI can help determine whether they are at a healthy weight, overweight or obese individuals are at increased risk for many diseases, such as: heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type-2 diabetes, and some types of cancer. With high BMI the individual would need to perform further assessments, start with a diet, physical activity, family history, change lifestyle.
According to my calculations, I have a BMI of 27.6 which puts me in the category of being overweight. A person my age and height should have and ideal weight ranging from 160lbs to 175lbs. Many risk factors that are associated with being overweight includes, coronary heart disease, hypertension, stroke, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, cancer, osteoarthritis, and sleep apnea. I consider myself a healthy overweight person because BMI cannot dictated everyone healthy state such as body builders; I perform similar workouts to body builders so I am at my BMI goal.
The higher the number, the more the body fat a person has. BMI, however, does not work the same way for everyone. Bodybuilders may have a very high BMI, despite not being obese, leading to incorrect readings and on the other hand, older people might have low BMI, but that is because they have lost muscle mass and not because they are obese. Hence, BMI is different for every person and is not a good way to generalize how a person’s physique should be judged. BMI should be evaluated by a health care provider who will be using various sources, along with BMI, in order to figure out how unhealthy or fit a person really
Body Mass Index (BMI): An indicator used to determine the state of a person’s weight, used to screen for health markers. It is calculated by dividing weight in kilograms (kg) by height in meters (m) squared, then multiplying by 703, resulting in kg/m2.
According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2011-2012, more than 34% of all adults are obese in that their BMI exceeds 24 (Ogden, Carroll, Kit, & Flegal, 2014). Interestingly, though this prevalence is high, it seems as though there has not been an increase since the same study done from 2003-2004. This seems to imply that we have plateaued at the peak that we have been rising towards since 1976 (Ogden, Carroll, Kit, & Flegal, 2014). To take this further, during the time of increasing incidences, in a study done from 1990-2004, it was seen that “the incidence of maternal obesity at the start of pregnancy [was] increasing and accelerating” which corresponds with the previous study’s findings (Heslehurst, et al.,
Obesity, or being overweight, is a common problem today. Walk down any street in America and a large majority of people seen will be overweight or obese. Obesity is determined by a measure of body mass index (BMI), which is an indicator of fat content in the body. The BMI score can be obtained by dividing weight in pounds (multiplied by 703) by height in inches squared. A BMI of 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight while a BMI of 30 or more indicates that one is obese. Being overweight affects nearly one third of the population of the United States, with another one third obese, and a portion of those are considered morbidly obese (a BMI of 40 or more). This statistic includes adults, adolescents, and school-aged children. Glassman, Glassman,
Over one-third of American adults are not overweight - but obese. Additionally, over one-sixth of American children are obese. Obesity is not just a condition, it is a physical disorder that poses numerous additional health risks. To measure obesity, the BMI scale is used and recognizes people with a BMI of 30 or over as obese. A healthy weight is from 18.5 to 25, and overweight is classified from 25 to 30. Furthermore, obesity is a detrimental disease that not only increases the risks of contracting other chronic diseases, but becomes a lifelong depression that consists of the negative development of fat cells and the feeling of utter hopelessness.
According to MedicineNet.com obesity is defined by National Institutes of Health as a BMI (Body Max Index) of thirty and above. A BMI of fifty would be about fifty pounds overweight. BMI is a person’s weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters. A high BMI usually means high body fatness. Obesity is based on both genetic and behavioral factors. Although both these factors can play a huge role in obesity it is time for Americans to own up to the fact that we are making ourselves obese.
For example, 20-40 percent over the ideal body weight of an individual is considered mildly obese whereas 40-100 percent is considered moderately obese and 100 percent over is considered severely or morbidly obese. In order to figure out if any individual is obese a BMI (Body Mass Index) measurement is used. According to Metcalf (2008), BMI “is the individual’s weight multiplied by 703 and then divided by twice the height in inches” (Metcalf, Pg. 14). A BMI of 25- 29 is considered to be overweight and a BMI of over 30 is considered to be obese.
Calculating an individual’s body mass index (BMI) can help doctors determine if the person is underweight. A normal weighing individual will have a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9. Anything below the lower limit is regard asunderweight and anything above 25 is overweight. Moreover, having a BMI of 30 or above
However, it is interpreted differently, because children grow and develop in very different ways as they mature. A child’s BMI is calculated with the formula used for adults, but there are no set ranges to indicate that he or she is underweight or overweight. Instead, children’s BMIs are compared on growth charts with those of other children of the same age and gender (Loonin 3).
The obesity in women can result in infertility. “Overweight and obese women are at a high risk for reproductive health. The risk of subfecundity and infertility, conception rates, miscarriage rates, and pregnancy complications are increased in these women.” (Dağ, 2015) The menstrual dysfunction and anovulation are higher in the women those who are
8. Obesity can also get in the way of conceiving. Obesity can cause hormonal imbalances which in turn interfere with reproductive capacity.
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measurement tool used to determine excess body weight. Overweight is defined as a BMI of 25 or more, obesity is 30 or more, and severe obesity is 40 or more. Overall the problem stems from the general citizens lack of work ethic; in recent years that ethic has declined severely. It is the inability or flat out unwillingness to work and/or struggle to get what you want. The table below highlights the increasing obesity problem.
BMI (Body Mass Index, kg/m2) is a measure of how much body fat one has. To prevent adult-onset obesity one could calculate and plot BMI once a year in all children and adolescents, use change in BMI to determine excessive weight gain in comparison to normal weight gain. This would help to recognize children with overweight problems early. If overweight is recognized early, it is easier to provide help and maybe change patients eating habits as well as their leisure time physical activity.
