Healthy People 2020 is a promotion to help raise public awareness by providing measureable objectives and goals for individuals to obtain higher qualities of lives, decrease premature deaths, and promote a higher quality of life (US Department of Health and Human Services, 2014). Healthy People 2020 has monitored its progress for over three decades between communities over the nation to understand where prevention measures are needed most. Fielding, Teutsch, & Koh (2012) projected that Healthy People 2020 will project a greater emphasis on social needs when it comes to health care disparities and will focus on education and income across the reform. One strength I noticed, when navigating through U.S. Department of Health and Human Services …show more content…
The proposal uses techniques through a MAP-IT technique and uses SMART goals to implement their initiative. When writing goals using the SMART goal process nurses must evaluate their goals based on the time frame they need to apply their desired outcomes (Healthedpartners, 2014). These goals for community health promotion programs should be specific, measurable, action-oriented, realistic, and time sensitive goals for community designs. A weakness noted is that when navigating through the website of Healthy People 2020 there appears to be an overwhelming amount of information and some of it appears to be re-iterated from page to page. I believe that maybe this can be condensed between the topics and objectives and the leading health indicators. Healthy People 2020 has over 42 topic areas with 1200 objectives with a smaller selection noted to be the leading health indicators. This can be very confusing for the reader when trying to navigate. When reviewing the progress update of the health indicators I noticed that there was a weakness here that only 4 indictors exceeded their target goals (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services of Healthy People.gov, …show more content…

Since 1980, the United States has taken on 10-year plans that outline certain key national health objectives set to be accomplished during a 10-year timeframe (Shi & Singh, 2015). These initiatives are founded on medical care with prevention services, health promotion, education, community health care, and increased access to integrated services. The initiative, Healthy People 2010: Healthy People in Healthy Communities, launched in 2000. The initiative emphasizes the role of community partners such as
I assume that in today’s world, there is a lot of information and scholarly research available that shows factors such as economic status, income, social situations, education, ethnicity, employment, availability of affordable housing and geographical (place where one was born and lives) conditions have a tremendous impact on the health and well-being of individuals, countries and communities (Amaro, 2014). Inequalities in health and well-being are created by social determinants and economic conditions for many in our community (Brannigan &Boss). The people that are affected the most are people with low income and minority groups here in the United States. This creates health disparities and unequal care (Brannigan &Boss). In many developing and under-developed countries, the situation is dire: lack of modern health services, illiteracy, poor economic conditions has created a cultural situation of desperation and unhealthy behaviors. Corruption by African governments is rampant. To improve the health and wellbeing of communities, we need to start thinking of how we can create a culture of health.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “health disparities are preventable differences in the burden of disease, injury, violence, or in opportunities to achieve optimal health experienced by socially disadvantaged racial, ethnic, and other population groups, and communities” (CDC, 2017). It is easy to believe that control on overall health relies solely on making a firm decision (the “right” decision" to lead a healthy lifestyle— by being active and eating a balanced-diet. There are other factors to be considered in evaluating and understanding health disparities: why people seem to be noncompliant? Or why people aren’t seeking medical attention in a timely manner? The health status of the population in the United States is a national priority. The Healthy People 2020 outlines priorities and to improve the health of individuals and communities across the country. Healthy People 2020 is defined as a comprehensive set of national objectives for “improving the health of all Americans” (Healthy People 2020, n.d, para. 1). The Healthy people 2020, is aimed at improving the health of individuals and communities and envisions “a society in which all people live long, healthy lives” (Healthy People 2020, n.d, para 4). A short priority list was developed and contains twenty-six objectives knowns as Leading Health Indicators (LHI). The list of objectives was created to prioritize health issues that must be addressed and to find appropriate actions to take in order to improve the health of the population.
1. Healthy People 2020: Have a vision of a society that all people live long, healthy lives by using a 10 year plan. Through their mission they identify
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is the U.S. government’s principal agency for protecting the health of all Americans and providing essential human services, especially for those who are least able to help themselves. HHS is responsible for almost a quarter of all federal outlays and administers more grant dollars than all other federal agencies combined. The mission of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is to enhance the health and well-being of Americans by providing for effective health and human services and by fostering sound, sustained advances in the sciences underlying medicine, public health, and social services. In addition, HHS is also responsible to provide better services to people by adapting to new technologies to keep pace with the advancement in technology. As we compare the health and human services from last ten years to present, it is very clear to analyze how health and human systems have improved over the years. The Department manages programs that cover a vast spectrum of activities that impact health, public health, and human services outcomes throughout the life span.
“Nurses have a long and rich history of wanting to do the most good for the most people. Today, it is imperative that advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) continue that tradition by delivering care that improves the health of populations.” (Curley & Vitale, 2016). Along with other health care providers, APRNs individually share the responsibility of promoting more healthier lifestyles among his or her surrounding community. Over the course of the past several years, much needed attention has been focused towards population based health disparities and the impact thereof on our nation. In the pursuit of obtaining a healthier society, the U.S. government has designed and utilized a program presently titled HealthyPeople2020. This program
The health of the American people lags behind those from other developed countries. Federal public health agencies have a wide range of responsibilities and functions which includes public health research, funding, and oversight of direct healthcare providers. It has been a long time since changes have been made to the way the federal government structures its health care roles and programs outside of Medicare and Medicaid (Trust, 2013). With healthcare reform on the horizon now is the time to invest time and money in prevention, not medicine, making it a top priority to improve health and prevent disease. Funding efforts at all levels of the public health continuum need to focus on developing programs aimed at such leading initiatives
Health People 2020 has four main goals and all those four goal are applicable to The
Healthy People 2020 define health equality as “the attainment of the highest level of health for all people.” Comprehension of this ideal brings forth the conclusion that everyone should receive equal amount of attention to prevent inequalities, injustices, and to remove health and health care disparities. According to the National Institute of Health, health disparities are resulted from multiple factors defined by race/ethnicity, sex, education, geographic location, income, and disability status. These disparities can stem from many elements like increase risk for disease, which may originate genetically, by ethnicity, or familial factors, occupational exposure, and if access to health care is available. Health inequality has
According to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) (2011), Healthy People has changed during the three decades of its existence. The mission of Healthy People 2020 is to: Determine healthcare priorities; Arrange for objectives and goals to be attainable at all levels; Classify research evaluation and data collection requirements; Increase community awareness and knowledge concerning healthy habits, illness, disability, and opportunities for advancement; in addition, Engage various divisions to strengthen guidelines and advance practices by using understanding and evidence-based practices.
Of the many Healthy People 2020 topics and objectives, there are several that line up with the major health problems of Trigg County. Cancer is a Healthy People 2020 topic, with the goals of reducing the number of new cancer cases and reducing illness, disability, and death related to cancer (Health People, 2010). Tobacco use is also a topic area. Substance abuse is another Healthy People topic. The goal is to reduce substance abuse and protect health, safety, and quality of life (Healthy People, 2010). Substance use and tobacco use are also among the leading health
In 2010, Healthy People 2020 was started by the Department of Human Health Services. Health programs and research topics were instituted to help Americans live healthier and longer lives (CDC, 2014). The 42 topics presented are all very important in maintaining the goals set by Healthy People 2020. If these programs were to be cut or budget restraints imposed on them, the impact would be felt by all Americans. There would be more unhealthy people, preventable chronic diseases would be more prevalent, and education and health associated programs would be
Health people 2020 is focused on promoting health, protecting health, and providing preventative services. The plan is to decrease health disparities by improving the health of certain groups in need of better health care. The Health People 2020 initiative wants to prevent chronic disease such as cancer, diabetes mellitus, and heart disease.
It is important that health care services are of high quality in order to achieve the best health outcomes of individuals or patients. The achievement of health equity can increase the health quality living and foster healthy lifestyle, thus eliminating health care disparities (“American Public health Association”, 2015). For a nation to be prosperous and continue thieving the health of the people is immensely important. “A nation’s collective health bears both an economic and human cost” (National Association of Chronic Disease Directors, n.d.p.1). According to “National Association of Chronic Disease Directors” (n.d), “Poor health of a population or an unhealthy nation can exert tremendous force on employment rates, interest costs and
