Inherent inside every human soul is a savage evil side that remains repressed by society. Often this evil side breaks out during times of isolation from our culture, and whenever one culture confronts another. Joseph Conrad 's book, The Heart of Darkness and Francis Coppola 's movie, Apocalypse Now are both stories about Man 's journey into his self, and the discoveries to be made there. They are also about Man confronting his fears of failure, insanity, death, and cultural contamination. Kurtz is facing a new culture and has a terrible time dealing with it. This was the beginning of his insanity. The disconnection between the opening words of Kurtz 's report "By the simple exercise of our will, we can exert a power for good practically unbounded" and the note on the last page, "Exterminate all the brutes!" illustrates the progressive externalization of Kurtz 's fear of contamination. The personal fear of loss of self-which colonialist whites saw in the uncivilized, seemingly regressive lifestyle of the natives. Coppola makes a point to show us that the Chief of a boat armed to the teeth was killed by a native in a tree who threw a spear. Not even an advanced Navy boat can defend itself against some simple natives armed only with spears. This opens Captain Willard 's eyes to the horror of the situation he now finds himself in. We live our lives sheltered in our own society, and our exposure to cultures outside of our own is limited at best. Often, the more technologically advanced cultures look down upon those that they deem to be simpler. In the Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, Marlow goes into the depths of an African jungle and encounters a level of evil and savagery not seen in day-to-day life. The real “heart of darkness” comes from hidden evil within humans, suppressed by rules and regulations in society. This potential evil, when able to be free from the standards in society, can reveal a completely different side to a person, as shown through the character of Kurtz. Kurtz holds a great amount of power in a secluded area, over a group of people who feel inferior to him, which turns into the ultimate abuse of power. While savagery tends to come out only during extreme circumstances, acts of evil are displayed in society daily, exempting no one from having evil thoughts or tendencies.

He listens to Kurtz talking about the essentials of war: “Horror and moral terror are your friends. If they are not, then they are enemies to be feared.” And Kurtz is convinced that the American army is not strong enough to be ‘friends’ with the horror. To explain this to Willard we are told a story, in which the Americans are inoculating the children of a Vietnamese children. After this the Viet Cong came in and cut of the inoculated arms of the children. To Kurtz this shows the courage and the will it takes to win a war. He is sure that the Americans will lose the war. As Willard listens to the story you get a feeling that he begins to understand Kurtz. He silently agrees with his views, and perhaps it is exactly these words that makes him able to kill Kurtz in the end. Kurtz is the captain in Walt Whitman’s poem “Oh Captain! My Captain!” Willard is the soldier who lost his commander, but in this scenario Willard is also the killer of the captain. It is Kurtz own words who leads to his death, and this he is aware of.

What makes Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness more than the run of the mill adventure tale, is its moral complexity. By the end of the novel, we find a protagonist who has immense appreciation for a man who lacks honest redemption, the mysterious Mr. Kurtz. It is the literal vivaciousness and unyielding spirit of this man, his pure intentionality, which Marlow finds so entrancing and which leaves the reader with larger questions regarding the human capacity. Therefore, Heart of Darkness is profoundly different given its character complexity and ambiguous narrative technique which ultimately deliver home a message of the complex motivations and capabilities of mankind.

In the opening scenes of the documentary film "Hearts of Darkness-A Filmmaker's Apocalypse," Eleanor Coppola describes her husband Francis's film, "Apocalypse Now," as being "loosely based" on Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness. Indeed, "loosely" is the word; the period, setting, and circumstances of the film are totally different from those of the novella. Yet, a close analysis of character, plot, and theme in each respective work reveals that Conrad's classic story of savagery and madness is present in its cinematic reworking.
Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now lacks the impact of its inspiration, Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness. While the basic elements of imperialism and human nature remain intact, the characters of the film bare little resemblance to their literary counterparts. The film serves as a re-interpretation of Conrad’s novella, updated from 19th-century British imperialism in the Congo to a critique of 20th-century U.S. imperialism in Southeast Asia. Coppola’s changes in setting and plot structure, however, force the film to sacrifice the character development so crucial in the literary work. Heart of Darkness, written by Joseph Conrad and “Apocalypse Now”, a movie directed by Francis Coppola represent two outstanding examples that compare relevant ideas regarding racism, colonialism, and prejudices. The two combine film along with descriptive language to portray their mastery during different eras. For Heart of Darkness, Conrad uses his writing techniques to illustrate Marlow in the Congo, while in “Apocalypse Now”, Coppola uses film editing and close ups on important scenes with unique sounds to identify Willards’ quest for Kurtz. Both portray the idea of colonization in foreign lands that otherwise may have been uninhabited by their own people if left alone.
In both Apocalypse Now and Heart of Darkness certain elements of darkness attempt to show how deep one must look inside themselves to discover the truth. Conrad portrays the idea of the darkness of the human heart through things such as the interior of the jungle and it's immensity, the Inner Station, and Kurtz's own twisted deeds. Coppola's heart of darkness is represented by the madness of the Vietnam War and how even to look for a purpose in it all; is itself quite mad.
