Everyday a different crime is committed; however, the reason or motive behind it is not always understood. Over the years, theories were developed to explain why certain crime occurs. For example, Andrea Yates was a mother of 5 who drowned her children due to a mental illness she endured, but there are many theories that play a vital role in explaining why she committed this crime. The theories that will be discussed throughout this paper are the Biosocial Trait Theory and the General Strain Theory.

Heather Whitestone has contributed so much to deaf history. In 1995 Heather made history by being crowned the first deaf Miss America. She has raised awareness for Deaf and hard of hearing people all over the United States. She has written three books, been part of the National Council on Disability, promoted awareness for deaf issues, and ,of course, been the first deaf woman to win the Miss America title.

On June 20, 2001 a woman by the name of Andrea Yates, stunned the whole country with one of the most bizarre acts of violence that a parents could ever do to their own children. She called her husband at work and told him “I did it” confused by what was going on, he rush home only to find his house filled with officers of the law. The husband asked, “What is going on?”, and only to found out that his wife had drowned all five of their children.

Heather is most memorable for winning the title of Miss America in 1995. She is known as the First Deaf Miss America. Heather is an accomplished author having written four books, Listening with my Heart, Believing the Promise, Let God surprise you, and Heavenly Crowns. She organized the Heather Whitestone Foundation to help other people reach their own adventure.

In Delta, Louisiana Sarah Breedlove was born to parents Minerva and Owen Breedlove on December 23, 1867. Sarah was the first unrestricted child to her recently freed (from slavery) parents. Sarah’s parents worked on a cotton field, when Sarah was old enough she worked with them. Although Sarah had a lot of work she managed to have fun with other children. They went to fish fries where people sang and danced, in addition they went to church on Sundays with their families. When Sarah was about 5 years old her mother unexpectedly died and less than 2 years later her father died. Sarah went to live with her sister, Louvenia and her husband, who was very cruel to Sarah. In 1878 the 3 moved to Vicksburg, Mississippi because of the yellow fever outburst.

Andrea Yates was born on July 2, 1964 in Houston, Texas. She was the youngest of five children and grew up in a Catholic household. She graduated from Milby High School in 1982. Yates was involved in many extracurricular activities including the swim team and the National Honor Society. Yates had a seemingly typical childhood and life thereafter that. After high school she continued her education at the University of Houston. She was enrolled in a pre-nursing program and later went on to graduate from the University of Texas School of Nursing. It was a privilege to listen to Stephanie Garrison share her story and provide encouragement for our own lives. Personally, I found it very admirable how willing she was to share and be vulnerable. Andrea Yates was a thirty-seven year old mother who committed a terrible crime. As she drowned her five children in the family bathtub, she believed that she was “saving” them. Many horrendous crimes are committed, yet the assailant gets away with the verdict of insanity.

Heather Whitestone McCallum was born on February 24, 1973 in Dothan, Alabama (“Heather Whitestone”). When Heather turned 18 months old, she captured a high fever from the virus, Haemophilus Influenzae, which resulted in hospitalization. Whitestone was close to death, when the doctors prescribed her two extremely powerful antibiotics. She returned home as a normal toddler until her mother had an accident in the kitchen and realized something was wrong. Whitestone’s mother had dropped several pans while cooking, and Heather did not jump or move when the pans hit the floor. Heather was taken to a children’s hospital, where the doctors concluded that she had lost her hearing from Haemophilus Influenzae, the powerful antibiotics, or a combination of both (“Heather Whitestone | Bio | Premiere Motivational Speakers Bureau.”). At a young age, Whitestone’s parents trained her to read lips and speak using an educational arrangement titled, “Acoupedics.” Because she learned how to speak and read lips, she did not receive an interpreter during her years in public school (“Heather Whitestone”).

Danielle Davis married the love of her life back in 2010. They had a picture-perfect life for seven months, but tragedy struck in July 2011.
