Heather Whitestone McCallum was born on February 24, 1973 in Dothan, Alabama (“Heather Whitestone”). When Heather turned 18 months old, she captured a high fever from the virus, Haemophilus Influenzae, which resulted in hospitalization. Whitestone was close to death, when the doctors prescribed her two extremely powerful antibiotics. She returned home as a normal toddler until her mother had an accident in the kitchen and realized something was wrong. Whitestone’s mother had dropped several pans while cooking, and Heather did not jump or move when the pans hit the floor. Heather was taken to a children’s hospital, where the doctors concluded that she had lost her hearing from Haemophilus Influenzae, the powerful antibiotics, or a combination of both (“Heather Whitestone | Bio | Premiere Motivational Speakers Bureau.”). At a young age, Whitestone’s parents trained her to read lips and speak using an educational arrangement titled, “Acoupedics.” Because she learned how to speak and read lips, she did not receive an interpreter during her years in public school (“Heather Whitestone”). While growing up, Heather had a passion for dance and attended ballet classes …show more content…
I enjoyed learning about Heather’s background, education, and career goals before and after her reign as Miss America. Heather Whitestone inspired me because she reached out to several people and motivated them to work hard and focus on their dreams. I can only imagine the amount of people in both the hearing world and Deaf Community that looked up to Heather and praised her for her successes. Even though Whitestone joined the hearing world later in life, I believe she used her cochlear implant to associate herself with deaf and hearing individuals and create relationships and a joint understanding with members of each

As a small child, Megan always had a passion for horses just as every other little girl did. Her life revolved around them and her dream job had always been a veterinarian. Throughout junior high and high school that dream remained strong. Although she was involved in volleyball, track, FFA, spanish and book club, horses were still her number one priority.

Mikayla Nellannej Fletcher is a seventeen year old girl residing in Johnson County, Tennessee. While her childhood was fraught with an unfortunate ensemble of severely negative influences, her resolve preceded her. Through trial and troubles she came out as only a slightly damaged, sweet, and ingenious person. This isn’t intended to be a passage about her history and personal development, but an account of my personal experience with her. I’m fortunate enough to have the title of her boyfriend, and even more fortunate to be able to call her my girlfriend. Only one other has had that privilege, one who certainly did not deserve the title. Even after his abuse and mistreatment Mikayla managed to preserve her demeanor when it comes to romance
It was a privilege to listen to Stephanie Garrison share her story and provide encouragement for our own lives. Personally, I found it very admirable how willing she was to share and be vulnerable. Anyways, Stephanie is currently in her 14th year at Southeastern and serves as the Assistant Athletic Director under Drew Watson. Beginning in the athletics department in January of 2014, as the Director of Operations. Heather Whitestone has contributed so much to deaf history. In 1995 Heather made history by being crowned the first deaf Miss America. She has raised awareness for Deaf and hard of hearing people all over the United States. She has written three books, been part of the National Council on Disability, promoted awareness for deaf issues, and ,of course, been the first deaf woman to win the Miss America title.

These books not only helped Heather explain her life story but helped her go through hard obstacles she faced as a Deaf woman in
She travelled throughout the country and gave several speeches. She encouraged deaf children and adults to strive for their dreams. Some people in the deaf community were upset because she spoke and read lips instead of signing. But Heather continued to speak and encouraged deaf people not to settle but to go beyond their disability.
Laura S. Haviland risked her own life trying to make a difference for the lives of others. She was not very concerned about what would happen to her, she just wanted to make sure others were getting what she thought they deserved. She was an abolitionist and a writer. Throughout her life she was devoted to helping people in many different ways, spending much of her life doing different activities that involved helping people, most importantly slaves and their families. These were things she never had to do, but chose to do. She took it upon herself to spend her life doing this. One of the biggest things she devoted her life to was the underground railroad. She also helped to make big improvements for African Americans. This almost cost her, her life, but she kept going and helping. Without Laura Haviland's demanding work and dedication Michigan would not have made such drastic improvements as they did during this time. Laura worked her whole life to selflessly help so many different people in their current situations. Laura was a teacher,
Most people will never have the experience of being a Black male, I personally never had to bear the struggles Black men encounter on a daily basis. However, I have been exposed to the weight and implications of a “Black male in America”. My most recent interaction has been with my current boyfriend, Kelsey Wilkerson. He has been through a lot in his 22 years here on earth. He lost his father at the age of six months. He grew up hearing family members describing the qualities and physical similarities he share with his deceased father. He often described hearing these stories often made him feel bittersweet; it brings a gigantic smile to his face, but it is sad because he will never have that father/son relationship. Kelsey was lucky to have
