A train barreled over Joseph Hewins' body on a wintry evening in 1845 in the Massachusetts Berkshires. Hewins had spent the workday shoveling snow off the tracks, only to be killed on his trip back to town when a switchman got distracted. Hewins left behind a wife and three children, who were poor even before his death. His widow sued but lost at every level. Had the train merely chopped off Hewins' leg, the railroad would have paid. But in the perverse logic of that time, when a man died, he took his legal claims with him. And so the thinking went for most of the century, until something unheard of began to happen. The courts started to put a dollar value on a life--after death.
“No matter the situation that you’re in, I just want you to know that you always a choice to make,” my father Nicholas R. Hines repeated to me for the what seemed like the millionth time in my life. As I a child I very rarely saw my dad, but when I did, it was in a court ordered supervised visitation center. It wasn’t until I was ten or eleven that I realized why this was necessary. I discovered that my father had made some poor choices when he was drunk and angry with his wife. Regardless, my sister and I love our dad dearly, even though we know the mistakes he has made in his life. That is one of the reasons I decided to Interview Nick Hines.
Lastly Rahim, I want to thank you for always being there for the both of us. I know you see him differently than I do. You understand him in a way I cannot. I cannot see him as anything other than different. It’s great that we have met so early on and thus, took down many obstacles together and achieved amazing

Christina let us appreciate, thank, and praise the lord for his kind care over our relatives. Who have gone forth, and sacrificed their lives, for the conservation of our country. I cannot believe the murderous people that have rose up to destroy the best government in this world.

It is evident the messages of motherhood changed throughout the decades. In the 1950s the nuclear family was portrayed as the ideal family—mother, father and two children. It was during this decade in which the middle class was created. Mothers stayed at home to care for their children and the home. They were always nicely dressed, carried an immense smile and were ready to serve their husbands and children. I recognize the messages about motherhood being different from the 1950s to the 1960s in that the role of motherhood was socially influenced by women’s skin tone. Although slavery had ended—African Americans were yet to be free. White children from wealthy families were being raised by women of color while their mothers took care of solely

In the chaos and hubbub of our busy lives it is easy to get out of balance and forget the many blessings we have to be thankful for. Today, I am thankful for each one of you, my followers and my friends. I am thankful for my family, and for the opportunities I have been given to share my knowledge of caregiving tools with a community of people who understand the challenges and pitfalls of caring for someone you love who is no longer able to do what they once were.
