Hedwig and the Angry Inch; A review. Hedwig and The Angry Inches a 2001 rock musical. Directed, written by and starring John Cameron Mitchell, Hedwig and The Angry Inches a proactive musical unlike any other. Cameron-Mitchell plays Hedwig, a transgender women born in East Berlin, who is subject to a botched sex change in order to marry an American soldier and get out of East Berlin. When she reaches Kansas she becomes is the front of a rock band who shadows her famous ex-lover famous Tommy Gnosis. The film uses unique and simple animations paired with hilarious and beautiful rock ballads to tell Hedwig’s story. Hedwig’s cast is full of firsts. John Cameron Mitchell had never played a women before, and was extremely concerned that he would offend the transgender community. The near ten years he spent studying on how to portray Hedwig in a realistic and tangible way while sticking with the wild plot paid off. Hedwig has become a trademark LGBTQ film. Stephan Trask and John Cameron Mitchell both knew that they wanted a women to play Hedwig’s husband Yitzhak. Miriam shore was not expecting to be casted for the role, and was hesitant about even auditioning however considering this was her first major role she plays Yitzhak beautifully. Shor pulls of drag impeccably, to the point where the only feminine trait that shines through is her voice, soaring harmonies with Hedwig’s deeper more masculine counterpart. Hedwig and The Angry Inches a small cast of characters, few with their own personal story. Most of the characters in the film are there to ultimately help highlight Hedwig and help tell her story. For instance the manager of Hedwig’s band Phyllis Stein played by Andrea Martin really brings out the cruel side of Hedwig, ultimately leaving Hedwig as a response to her treatment of Yitzhak.
