For this week's journal entry, I chose to relate Lull's idea of hegemony to a Variety article about written about Idris Elba appearance in relation to the casting of the new James Bond movie. In James Lull's article Hegemony, he identifies hegemony as the power or dominance that one social group holds over others. He speaks abut how hegemony is a method of gaining and maintaining power over the non dominant groups. Hegemony also helps instill and reproduce the dominant ideologies in culture. In my opinion, this is very closely related to a recent Variety article I came across regarding the new James Bond movie set to release within the next year. There has been much talk amongst social media sites about who will actually play James Bond in
There were two areas at the time which resisted colonizations. One was Japan the other was North America. This leads the way to America becoming an independent Power rivaling great Britian. As our "war of independence" took place within the larger context of an imperialist rivalry between France and Britian, this was possible. The rivalry ruined the economy of both these nations. Britian the victor, exacerbated ill feeling here by determining that the colonists should pay these debts. Before the war of Independence colonies were not allowed to trade with one another, develop industries nor have their own currencies. This changed with the war of Independence but was a conflict that really continued from 1780 to 1850. This civil war was a contest
In “Complexity and the Ten-Thousand-Hour Rule”, Malcolm Gladwell argues that one needs more than innate talent to reach mastery in an intellectually challenging field. He asserts that expertise comes with preparation and time along with talent. Gladwell’s argument focuses mainly on masters in the highest level of their craft. He claims “that the closer psychologists look at the careers of the gifted, the smaller the role innate talent seems to play and the bigger the role preparation seems to play.” Gladwell defends this argument by providing numerous pieces of evidence in which this theory has proven true and by addressing counter arguments on how masters get to the zenith of their field.
One of the key concepts detailed by Pringle (2007), is the idea of hegemonic masculinity, which was originally coined by Connell (1995). Connell suggest that the concepts of hegemony and masculinity have been intertwined, which has created a social form of a masculine ideal, developed around male dominance, power and patriarchy over groups who are deemed “weaker” such as women and homosexual men. Hegemonic masculinity is essentially a socially elite or desirable status, with which the “performance of ‘masculinity’” can be legitimately practised within society.
Counterhegemonic globalization is “a type of social movement that fundamentally challenges and, in rare circumstances, produces changes and alters the dimensions of the contemporary political or economic order” (Gillies, Counterhegemonic Globalization and the Decline of the Record Industry, pg.2). Essentially what this means is that it is a way of showing distaste for how a system is set up in many parts of the world (often due to the penalties that are more often than not given to the lower class in these cases), and expressing said distaste through attempting to change it. This can obviously cause problems for government and corporations, especially corporations that have a monopoly on a certain business sector, for example Wall Street has a monopoly on stock markets. Counterhegemonic globalization
Jake’s physical trauma has a significant impact on him because it makes him feel less superior and effeminate about his masculinity as he continues to encounter new relationships. Jake met a woman named Georgette off the streets and he invited her to dinner. When they were driving around in a taxi, she tried to touch Jake and he refused. He told her that he was sick and she said “ It’s a shame you’re sick. We get on well. What’s the matter with you anyway?” (Hemingway 24) Jake’s sickness is referred to his wound. Until Jake reveals that he was hurt in the war, Georgette believed that he was just sick. When Georgette says “ it’s a shame that you’re sick”, she is telling him that it is embarrassing and humiliating. It turns out that
The United States at the dawn of the 20th Century was beginning its ascent into worldwide prominence. This was unprecedented for what had once been termed as an “experiment in democracy” and came with unexplored opportunities for the nation. The West had all but been conquered, and the industrialization of the nation was in full swing, but what the country needed was a market for its surplus goods. With the prominence that had caused America to gain worldwide attention, the nation likewise followed suit with other worldly nations of the time and engaged in the pursuit of imperialist expansion. Regardless of whether it is in fact imperialism, or if it was the “American exceptionalism” that our country likened it to, the fact is that
The question of, “Was America’s actions during the Cold War containment or hegemony?” cannot be easily answered with a single source or perspective. While some attempt to justify the United States’ actions during the Cold War as necessary to preserving freedom and the American way of life through the containment of the Soviet threat, there are just as many critics on the other side of the debate that have argued that, America used the Cold War as a veil under which it expanded it’s influence and power throughout the world. My intent is to show how some believe that America’s Cold War policies were completely justified and how others see America’s actions as nothing more than American imperialism.
the winning and holding of power and the formation (and destruction) of social groups in that process” (644) such that it is crucial that the ruling class establishes and maintains its domination. Moreover, it includes persuasion of a big part of the population, especially through the media and the organization of social institutions. Homophobia and heterosexuality form the foundation for hegemonic masculinity and all comprehension of its meaning is predicated “on the feminist insight that in general the relationship of men to women is oppressive” (644). Hegemonic masculinity is grounded in form of the hero and displayed through forms that deal with heroes, e.g., sagas, and westerns, in television, books, and movies (Connell qtd. in Donaldson 646). To define a specific form of masculinity as hegemonic, it is important to note that “its exaltation stabilizes a structure of dominance and oppression in the gender order as a whole” (Connell qtd. in Donaldson 646).

A time where I experienced hegemony was when I was at T.E Culbertson elementary school I was about six years old and I was outside playing on the playground waiting for my turn to get on the monkey bars. Since the elementary school was prodomitaly black I stood behind about four other black kids and behind me was two other white girls. I remember climbing up the stairs to reach the bars and I noticed the other kids picking on this pale, little dainty girl named Victoria she was being teased because according to the other kids she wore the same thing on a regular basis. Growing I was always told to treat others the way I would want to be treated an I knew for sure I wouldn’t want to be teased or made fun of. So I jumped down from the monkey
In these two article globalization and the increase of globalism is described in two very different ways. Waltz arguing from a realist’s perspective; that the politics of the state is ultimately affected within globalization. R.O.keohane and J.S.Nye Jr express a liberal opinion, arguing the many different factors that affect the increase in globalism.
Introduction: The purpose of this experiment is to demonstrate an example of how to determine the unknown molarity of hydrochloric acid by titration with a base (sodium hydroxide). Titration is a common laboratory method of quantitative chemical analysis that is used to determine the unknown concentration of an identified analyte (wekipedia). The first step will be measuring and combining water and acid (Hydrochloric acid). An indicator anthocyanin will be added to the solution to change the color to pink. Anthocyanin is a water-soluble vacuolar pigment that may appear red, purple, or blue depending on the pH
Globalization is the way companies distribute products in the world. Products such as phones, cars, tablets, and computers are distributed in the entire words through exportation which mean from one country to the other. There are a lot of advantages as well as disadvantages to globalization. The advantages of globalization include education, employment, communication, and cheap prices. On the contrary, the disadvantages of globalization include loss of culture, health problems, environmental degradation, and disparity. My opinion of the death threats of the CIA or communist is that we only live once. If your death is today, whether you decided to spread lies or remain true to yourself, you are still going to die. Everybody is going to die
In a country of complicated decisions made by politicians about far away places and the people that live there, it's only a guess as to the motives behind each of these decisions. In Noam Chomsky's book "Hegemony or Survival: America's Quest for Global Dominance", Noam gives a scrupulously researched critique of America's quest for dominance at any cost that not only has cast us in the role of a rogue superpower but also jeopardizes the very survival of humanity. From reading this book, I will give an account as to what Chomsky says about American hegemonic ideals and give him credit for the attempt that he has made to expose historical truth.
In “Biographies of Hegemony” by Karen Ho, she emphasizes that it is “only through the small and the everyday that we can understand the criteria of hegemony in all its particularity and contextuality” (168). To fully understand and evaluate someone or a group, people must look at the small qualities they have and the everyday stories each person has lived or seen. Smallness can be defined as certain experiences and individual characteristics that are overlooked, especially by big businesses and corporations such as Wall Street. By knowing a person down to their core and reviewing their small stories and individual experiences, people can begin to unravel and fully understand hegemony and how it came to be. Smallness tends to be overlooked and
