Helen Keller when questioned about the hardships regarding her childhood clarifies that “Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.” During my life I have experienced a fair amount of suffering and I truly believe that it has shaped me into the person I am today. The January before my freshman year in high school my father passed away after a relapse of health after being in remission for 13 years from osteosarcoma. My father and I were exceedingly close; he shared with me his love for electronics and programming, his witty sense of humor, and persistence in academics. After his passing it was just my mother, myself and my younger brother Alan …show more content…
My grandfather, Dr.Alfred Brinkley always told me that education is something that can never be taken away from you and that it should be treated as your most precious possession. As my academic record demonstrates I take great pride in my education. In the spring of 2015 I took the AP Biology and the AP Language and Composition Exams, passing both with a 3. After completing the Advanced Placement course in English, my analytical thinking and writing skills have greatly improved, as well as my ability to synthesize information. While I was challenged academically, I became more extroverted and more involved in school activities. In eleventh grade I was initiated into the Athens High School chapter of the National Beta Club, while being a member of the Beta Club I participate in activities in the community such as the annual Greece Festival, local blood drives with LifeSouth, gathering the weekly recycling from each classroom, volunteering to tutor children at my town’s Learning to Read Center during the summer. Every Sunday morning during the school year I help my grandparents teach the Confirmation class at
Along with being a diligent student who has been enrolled in 11 Advanced Placement classes, I have also dedicated my time to other causes. For example, I have volunteered at public libraries, Special Olympics events, orphanages for intellectually disabled children, and food pantries. While maintaining a rigorous course load and volunteering, I also work at Kumon. I tutor children to boost their confidences and understanding of concepts vital to their future success. Moreover, I have received membership to The National Honor Society and have been awarded an AP Scholar with Merit Award. My dedication to becoming more culturally aware and five years of enrollment in Spanish classes has allowed me to be inducted into Spanish Honor Society. Within
“Hello, unfortunately, Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan cannot come to the phone right now. As lovers of travel and meeting others, one can probably find them somewhere in Europe or maybe the United States. Most likely, Helen probably has some sort of exciting meeting with the Queen of England, Alexander Graham Bell, or Clara Barton. Anyway, please leave a name and number after the beep. Also, if the person on the other end possesses the name of “Mark Twain”, please no
In America, I-9 is a program that American firms rely upon to check whether one is an authorized employee or not. This system has many flaws because it’s easy to manipulate. E-Verify, a new and innovative way to check employee immigration status started to alleviate the problems I-9. In this essay, one can see what is E-Verify and the various arguments to E-Verify.
Being a deaf and blind person can be really hard for you and the people around you. That is how life was for Helen Keller after she got sick at 19 months old. Everything was fine for her until she got ill, which caused her to be deaf and blind permanently. Learning was very hard for her because no one knew how to teach her and she was technically spoiled.
If a person can learn from their past suffering, he or she can handle strenuous circumstances. Children need to learn at an early age to know life is not easy and not everything is going to be rewarded when they participate in an activity. Doing his or her best and working hard is going give them the ability to conquer their goals in life. “...suffering and conditionally granting awards...prepare children for real life and teach him or her resilience”(Gonchar 1). At a young age, children have been granted rewards for just showing up, but giving a child a reward which they did not not earned can cause them to see that life is easy and it will become easier when they have grown up. Facing adversity in their daily lives allows one to accept not everything is given to him or her for just showing up. Gene and Phineas know that life is not pretty in the time when a war is going on halfway around the world, but the world war happening in another country does not stop them from working hard each day to live their lives. Their suffering happened in their homes, but their future was not easily gained. Life is not always fair and children need to learn that at an early age, so he or she do not become weak in difficult situations. Everyone needs to know how to figure out life’s problems and accepting suffering that life throws at us will help us with
I have been diagnosed with dyslexia and was awarded the Jack Kent Cooke scholarship for children who are twice gifted. With that scholarship, I decided to attend Jemicy lower school from 6th -8th grade. Jemicy is a school that prides its self on teaching kids with dyslexia and other learning disabilities how to be successful in and out of the class room. In middle school I played soccer, basketball and lacrosse each year. Throughout my middle and high school years, I’ve spent my summers volunteering at summer camps and other organizations that aim to help clean up the Baltimore bay and the surrounding community. In my final year of high school I won Miss Congeniality and came in second place for the most adds raised during the Delta Sigma
Even with my family moving between four school districts and three states, I have managed to keep my grades all A’s and one B+ since kindergarten. In early elementary school, I can recall the teachers constantly giving me extra work to stimulate me, so I wouldn’t be bored with the work given to the rest of the class. Not only do I get good grades, but I have a great work ethic. I am conscientious in everything I do, and always turn my work in on time. I was recommended to compete in the Upper Bux-Mont Academic Challenge for two years in a row, and have been on the Distinguished Honor Roll all three years of middle school.
Helen Keller once said, “Although the world is full of suffering, it is also about overcoming it.” Helen Keller faced a lot of adversity and obstacles in her life. But she got through it. Everyone faces obstacles in their lives, some more than others, but no ones life is just a sunny sea. I will be telling of four stories that are full of amazing people, who, against all odds powered through obstacles and kept going with their lives and competing their dreams against all odds.
Bryant McGill once said “Suffering is one of life's greatest teachers” and this quote is very true. Suffering from a tragedy, many seem like the worst thing to ever happen, but if you push through and persevere, you will learn so much about yourself and the others around you. Through Suffering we learn from our past to grow our communities in the spirit of a hopeful future by preserving and bravery.
Many people throughout history have also faced adversity and have been resilient through it. For example, Tyler Perry; he had a terrible childhood, he was physically and sexually abused as a child, kicked out of high school, and tried to commit suicide twice in his lifetime. Still, through all his hardships, he produced and starred in his first theater production, I Know I’ve Been Changed, which failed. Therefore he obtained odd jobs to pay for the production; finally on the seventh run the show broke through. Through all his hardships he never gave up and today has a successful career as a writer, director, and actor. Oprah Winfrey also endured a rough childhood because of sexual abuse, she had a child at fourteen who passed away two weeks after. She continued on to finish high school with honors and get a scholarship for college. She worked her way up from TV anchor to a creator of her own network. Scientist Stephen Hawking was diagnosed with ALS and through his colleague, friends, and family’s support he became a great scientist. Through his perseverance Hawking managed many accomplishments such as his published book on the theories of the Big Bang. Nelson Mandela was also a person with great resilience who dreamed of racial equality and spent 27 years in prison for it.
I have always envisioned myself to be similar to Helen Keller because of her never ending perseverance, life changing disability and her desire to complete a bachelor’s degree even though she faced many uphill battles everyday due to her conditions. In comparison, I have faced many challenges with cerebral palsy trying to obtain my bachelor’s degree just like Ms. Keller faced throughout her entire life. Also, Ms. Keller never gave up no matter the circumstances and she never took no for an answer. Similarly, I never give up or take no for an answer when it comes to my limitations. Even though my journey has not always been smooth the bumps in the road have definitely shaped me into the person I am today.
The next day in school wasn’t mundane; I didn’t feel like a member of an ant colony, my thoughts were all over the place, discombobulated. In homeroom, tired, fading in and out of morning announcements I noticed a poster of Helen Keller pertaining to suffering. At that moment I realized that my emotional suffering could not parallel to the physical and emotional suffering my father was experiencing. As time progressed I learned to adapt to my new environment, making new friends, along with keeping
Many people face challenges and obstacles at a very young age and that can change who they are as they grow up. My grandma faced a very harsh and unfortunate childhood. Her father died when she was 17 and that changed her life and her future. It meant she was given many responsibilities since she was the eldest out of her siblings. She had to do many house chores such as cooking, washing the clothes and dishes and waking up early in the morning to get water from a nearby well every day! This placed a very large obstacle in her life at a very young age. She had to leave school at a very young age because of all the responsibilities she was given and had to overcome these obstacles and face them with great integrity. But due to these obstacles that she has overcome, it has changed who she is now. She struggled in life right from when she was just a little kid. But if she hadn’t overcome these obstacles she wouldn’t have been a very independent woman like she is today. If her father hadn’t died when she was young, she probably would have had a completely different
Here a quotation by author and political activist Helen Keller basically says that character cannot develop without going through some sort of hardship or experience and with that comes suffering and afterwards success is achieved & vision is cleared. I honestly believe Helen Keller’s assertion was correct when it comes to trial and suffering and the development of character whether it be positively or negatively. I can connect this with personal experience and those who I look up to as role models. Powerful leaders from history can make this quotation true as well.
