5. How is the conversation about Vicksburg that James and Captain Keller have at breakfast—the conversation that is interrupted by the battle between Annie and Helen—symbolic? Explain its relationship to the long, dialogue-free section of this act during which Annie and Helen struggle against one another.

Answer: This was symbolic because all the other characters wanted Annie to stop and just let Helen get what she wanted but Annie was persistent. This was I think one of the best parts in the book just because of how persistent Annie is. After the long battle between the two Annie had gotten Helen to eat her own food off of a plate and also fold her own napkin. All the characters were also thinking about sending Annie home until after this when Helen ran outside a complete mess and reached for her mother like she was a savior, and then found out that Annie had gotten Helen to eat her own food off of a plate and also fold her own napkin. After this the whole family and workers were completely awestruck, I thought this was very symbolic.

6. Describe Helen’s actions after she recognizes that water has a name. What does her behavior show about the beliefs that Annie Sullivan has repeatedly expressed in the play?
