Helga woke up and began looking for a reason to miss school. Finding no reasonable excuse to call absent for the sixth time in three weeks, she grunted and dragged her feet out of bed. Her tan, slender leg waved around the floor to search for the fur-lined pink Crocs she had forced dad to buy her on a recent airport visit. When the pair of expensive fur and foam was finally found, she sleepily slid them on her feet and wobbled to the bathroom. The toilet seemed shorter than usual this morning, which made her glad. She had loudly claimed that they make her look more attractive when kids pointed them out; while in fact she was terrified of the orthodontist. The water rushed out the faucet just as eagerly when she turned it on, and she spent five minutes washing her hands while looking at her own smiling mouth at different angles. On her head, she donned a short, black, and slick bob. She cut her hair that way in order to look classy, even only at certain angles. This morning, it was a struggle to keep the stray hairs in place, so she skipped taking a selfie. With the rest of her morning routines completed, Helga stomped out of her room and downstairs to leave the house. The two admire her beauty as she combs her hair and reads a book, before retreating to the front yard. Scott, fed up with being ugly, tells the narrator “they need to talk about this” - they need to figure out a way to be attractive. I feel like many people can relate to how Scott and the narrator feel, not just myself. No matter how attractive you are, you’ll always have something about yourself you despise. Something that you think is just plain ugly.

As the dust settled in the barn following Manley’s departure, a sick reality fell upon Hulga’s mind: she had to find a way to exit the barn with only one leg to work with. She began brainstorming ideas for her escape, but none seemed reasonable considering the circumstances. After hours of contemplation, she decided that the safest option was to spend the night in the barn and make her flight the following day.

Maya the wife write three different stories, the first one showing how a loss of an unborn child can make someone feel like they have died, or lost a part of themselves. The second is about how a women a may go through a period where she feels detached from her husband. The third is about the journey of accepting a miscarriage and ready try again. Aviad’s story is about continuously adapting to change and always remembering where you came from.
