Henry David Thoreau`s essay on “Civil Disobedience” is one of the most important essay`s in the world. Thoreau`s ideas on the government is what many reformers base their own movements on. Some of these activists are Martin Luther King Jr., Gandhi and Thomas Paine. These three activists and the movements they created are some of the most powerful and successful movements in world history and that can be contributed to Thoreau’s essay on Civil Disobedience. Thoreau states “A minority is powerless while it conforms to the majority; it is not even a minority then; but it is irresistible when it clogs by its whole weight.” This means that a minority is powerless but a majority that can disrupt the status quo will be heard and will be listen too. Thomas Paine believes in this same exact message that a small group of people are powerless while a large group will be able to be heard. Thomas Paine is one of the most Important people during the revolutionary war. His book “Common Sense” is a huge reason why the colonies were able to get some much soldiers because his book persuaded the common people. He persuaded them by talking about the British and at the same time saying that they were going to lose the war if the people did not unite as one. Thoreau and Paine idea about a united group were very similar and were very important to their own movements.
Henry David Thoreau`s essay on “Civil Disobedience” is the reason these activists were so successful. If Thoreau did not write his essay these activists may have never could make their movement so successful and so powerful. Thoreau’s idea were so clever and well thought at that it made so many activist be able to accomplish their movements goals at a fair government.
