Herbal medicine is the traditional medical practice and it’s an important part of medicine to this day. To treat different ailments there are various indigenous systems such as Siddha, Ayurveda, Unani and Allopathy use differnt plant species1. Allopathic medicine is a system of medicine that focuses primarily on reacting disease rather than on promoting health. The use of herbal medicine is popular due to toxicity and side effects of allopathic medicines.
Cancer is presently responsible for about 25% of all deaths in US and other developed countries. On a yearly basis, 0.5% of the population is diagnosed with cancer. It can be treated with chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapies etc., but all these have side effects and that

are used for cancer treatment but those are highly expensive due to less abundance of plants and very less amount of active constituent from plants like 500 mg vincristine from 5 kg vinca. So an indigenous drug, Sansevieria roxburghiana is selected for anti cancer activity as it is reported to have cytotoxicity in brine shrimp lethality assay18 and anti-cancer activity against Ehrlich ascites carcinoma in mice20. There are no investigations, so far, on the activity of extract to the active molecule level. The present proposal is aimed to fill this gap and validate the active fraction/s responsible for anticancer activities by established methodology.

Cancer is a class of diseases or disorders characterized by uncontrolled cell proliferation and tissue invasion or metastasis of abnormal cell in the body. This unregulated growth is caused by damage to DNA. This leads to mutations in genes that encoding proteins for controlling cell division5. Cancer is a dreadful human disease, and it kills annually about 3500 per million populations around the world. Oral cancer is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in India6. In 2008 IARC reported 12.7 million new cancer cases7 and 14.1 million new cancer cases in 2012 worldwide.
The major goal in the development of anticancer drugs is improving the therapeutic activity and selectivity. Plant-derived agents act by modulating various signaling pathways in cancer cells. Some of the
It is now believed that nature has given the cure of every disease through herbal medicine or management. Plants have been known to relieve various diseases in Ayurveda. Consequently, the researchers today are emphasizing on evaluation and characterization of various plants and plant constituents against a number of diseases based on their traditional claims of the plants given in Ayurveda. Extraction of the bioactive plant constituents has always been a challenging task for the researchers
It is thought that acai’s phytochemicals can stop the process of carcinogenesis on a molecular level, killing off tumorous cells before they multiply,
Norcantharidin (NCTD), the demethylated analogue of cantharidin, has been used to treat human cancers in China since 1984. It was recently found to be capable of inducing apoptosis in human colon carcinoma, hepatoma and glioblastoma cells by way of an elusive mechanism.1 Norcantatharidins and their analogues are synthetic anticancer agents which have been used in various different procedures for the inducing growth arrest and apoptosis of tumour cells and also provide therapeutic and adjuvant therapeutic applications in the treatment of cancer agents.2 This report will discuss the various different NCTD that are currently being studied, highlighting the synthesis of these NCTD and their various biological pathways that are taken in order to inhibit the growth of the correspondent cancer cell. In particular NCTD induced apoptosis of the hepatoma cells will be considered and also highlighting the different views with the synthesis of the particular NCTD and also the effectiveness of the methodology and its observations in response to other NCTD and their mechanism in attacking the hepatoma cell site.
Cancer or the big C as it is commonly referred to by laymen is a scary word for people to hear or discuss. The exact cause of cancer is unknown, but is believed to be caused by many elements, including diet, chemicals, tobacco, radiation, and mutations that occur in the human body, as well as defective cells and genes. Experts know that cancer requires oxygen and nutrients to grow more cancer cells. The paper will explore the concept of angiogenesis, what it is, and how it impacts cancer, along with exploring activators and inhibitors to stop the growth of cancer. Natural products will be reviewed to highlight any potential value in eliminating and reducing the risks of getting any type of cancer.
Compound 3a was selected by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) USA for anticancer screening with the NCI code D-785902/1. Compound 3c was found in the already tested cancer candidates in the NCI data base under NCI code NSC: 650353[42]. Both candidates were screened on human tumour cell lines at 10-5 M at the 60-Cell-Line Screenings of the Developmental Therapeutics Program (DTP) of the National Cancer Institute (NCI, Bethesda, Maryland, USA) under the drug discovery program of the NCI. The 60-cell-line-screening of the NCI includes 60 different tumour cell lines, the nine various organs and tumour types derived (leukaemia, non-small-cell lung cancer, colon cancer, CNS cancer, melanoma,
Systemic treatment is regularly utilized as a part of conjunction with different modalities that constitute "nearby treatment" (i.e. medications whose adequacy is limited to the anatomic territory where they are connected) for growth, for example, radiation treatment, surgery, and/or hyperthermia treatment. The adequacy of chemotherapy relies on upon the sort of tumor and the stage. The general viability ranges from being corrective for a few growths, for example, some leukemias, to being inadequate, for example, in some mind tumors,to being unnecessary in others, as most non-melanoma skin cancers. Clinical information has indicated docetaxel to have cytotoxic movement against bosom, colorectal, lung, ovarian, prostate, liver, renal, gastric, head and neck tumors, and melanoma. In hormone unmanageable prostate growth docetaxel enhances future and general life quality. Docetaxel has a place with a class of chemotherapy medications called plant alkaloids. Plant alkaloids are 5produced using plants. The vinca alkaloids are produced using the periwinkle plant. The taxanes are produced using the bark of the Pacific Yew tree. Vinca alkaloids and taxanes are otherwise called antimicrotubule operators. Treatment with docetaxel has the particular result of expanding survival time in patients with certain sorts of tumor. Some clinical trials show median survival times to be expanded by just three months,
On the same NHS website page (UK, NHS UK, 2017), herbal medicine is described as being a common complement to its conventional counterpart. Remove conventional medicine from the equation and herbal medicine is deemed to be alternative. There is also a third category of integrative medicine “where complementary therapies are used within a conventional medical setting as part of a prescribed treatment” (Nursing Times, 2008). It is important to understand that these definitions are placed within a cultural, social and indeed historical context which makes them subjective. Whilst orthodox Western medicine is the dominant mainstream in the UK, we should be aware that this is not the case in other countries and cultures.
Fruits, vegetables, and grains in general are anti-cancer champions. Virtually all of them are rich in antioxidants and other substances that block cancer at many stages of its development. The plant foods listed below are a few that appear to be great allies in our fight against cancer. Green tea inhibits tumors of the esophagus, breast, skin, colon and liver in rodents. Soybeans are rich in genistein, a phytochemical that appears to prevent small tumors from growing. Genistein apparently interferes with cancer at many points, from controlling cell proliferation to inhibiting angiogenesis, the building of blood vessels that supply nutrients to tumors. Studies have shown it particularly to protect against breast cancer. Broccoli and the cabbage family are full of phytochemicals that fight cancer. One of them, sulforaphane, protects lab animals from breast cancer. It appears to help cancer-fighting enzymes force carcinogens out of cells. And another, phenmethyl isothiocyanate, apparently disarms carcinogens and prevents DNA from damage. Tomatoes are associated with lower rates of several cancers, most particularly lung and prostate cancer. Flavonoids, phytochemicals that give color to fruits and vegetables, may block the ability of cancer-causing hormones to attach to cells. Garlic and onions contain phytochemicals that activate enzymes that neutralize carcinogens.
With the advancement in the severity of cancerous cells and the scarcity of novel drugs that can help fight such ailments, it has become necessary for researchers to come up with new ways and materials for treating various forms of cancer, among which plant extracts are a prime inclusion. To begin with, there are myriad types of cancer, but in this section, breast cancer is the kind on which focus is emphasized. Breast cancer is used to describe the rapid and uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in breast tissue, which are mainly lobules (glands producing milk) and ducts (passages through which milk moves to the nipples) (Nadja et al. 333). It is worth noting that breast cancer is a systematic ailment in the sense that cancer cells can start
Allopathic Medicine is a name given to the mainstream health care from Naturopathic professionals. Mainstream health care would be regular hospitals, which typically will prescribe a drug, then send the patient on their way. However, both Naturopathic Medicine and Allopathic Medicine have their pros and cons. Allopathic Medicine is ideal for emergency situations. These situations may be the case of; broken bones, intense gashes, or any other unforeseen accidents. Naturopathic medicine is perfect for prevention of disease. The medicinal treatment is also less harsh than that of the pharmaceutical drug. By this I mean the medicine is natural and unaltered, practitioners will use herbs, instead of medications which were produced in a lab. This is more natural for the body. The medicine stems from a more organic source with Naturopathic
History reveals the traditional usage of blackberry fruit, leaf, bark and roots by the Romans and Greeks for healing numerous health conditions ranging from a mild infection to venomous bites. The fruit is effective against the development of cancer including lung cancer, colon cancer, and esophageal cancer. The micronutrients present in blackberries exert chemopreventive effect and prevent the proliferation of malignant cells.
The first herbal anti-cancer medicine was the vinca alkaloids isolated from the Madagascar periwinkle plant, Catharanthus roseus. Extracts from this plant was found to have therapeutic anti-tumour activity and clinically began being used as Vinblastine and Vincristine in 1960. [2] The mechanism of Vinca Alkaloids is the inhibition of microtubules. The drug prevents the alignment of daughter chromosomes by depolymerizing the tubulin molecules inhibiting the formation of spindle fibres ultimately causing mitosis arrest and killing dividing cells. [3]
Modern medicine and healthcare system have categorized herbal medicine as a natural remedy used when people can’t afford to purchase conventional drugs. They are perceived inferior because they cost less but the health benefits are endless. However, there have been various situations and instances that prove that herbal medicine is good for health.
Fenugreek seeds were bought from a local herbalist. The seeds were ground up and five different solvents were used: chloroform, 70% ethanol, ethyl acetate, hexane and water. For each solvent, 2.5 grams of coarsely powdered seed material was extracted by refluxing with 25 ml of each solvent stated above for a period of thirty minutes and kept overnight at room temperature before filtration. The following day, after filtration, the solvents were evaporated until dryness using a rotary evaporator and the crude extracts were weighed. To make a stock solution that could be used for the subsequent experiments, five millimeters of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) was added and two hundred milligrams of the crude extract were weighed. Throughout the entire experiment, the percentage of DMSO was kept constant (1%). MCF7 breast cancer cells were acquired from the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC® HTB-22™). The media was supplemented with 10 % (v/v) heat-inactivated fetal bovine serum (FBS) (Gibco Invitrogen), antibiotics 100 U/ml penicillin (Lonza) and 100 µg/ml streptomycin (Lonza), 2 mM L-glutamine (Lonza) in addition to 25µM 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1 piperazineethanesulfonic acid (HEPES) (Biowest, France). Cells were maintained at 37 °C, 5% CO2 humidified incubator. The cell viability assay was performed using the 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazoyl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) as described previously (Mosmann, 1983), with minor modification. In summary, 7×103 cells were seeded
Two flavanone derivatives, norartocarpanone (1) and euchrenone a7 (2) had been isolated for the first time from the methanol extract of the wood of Morus nigra. The structure of these compounds were determined base on spectral evidence, including UV, IR, and NMR. The first compound also confirmed by comparison with the reported data. Cytotoxic properties of these compounds were evaluated against murine leukemia P-388 cells. Euchrenone a7 (2) was found more cytotoxic than norartocarpanone (1) with their IC50 7.8 and 12.7 g/mL respectively.
