Hermeneutic Techniques In The Film Wall-E

In the film Wall-E, we are exposed to multiple types of narratives. Throughout the first 10-12 minutes we are given many questions that are answered quickly and some that are answered over the course of the movie. These questions probe our interest and draw us deeper into the plot of the film. Questions such as, “What types of events lead to the abandoning of earth?”, “Why is the store Buy ‘N Large referenced so much?” and “What is the importance of the robot Wall-E?”. Throughout the film all these questions are answered for the audience through the hermeneutic code. This keeps the audience interested.
We are first introduced to different snapshots of outer space. There is music from the 1950’s playing in the background and as we slowly drift toward planet earth we are taken by surprise when we see a dystopian society that seems to be lifeless. We are then introduced to the first character. In the few moments the character, who is a robot, is on screen we have no dialogue. As the robot is cleaning up the abandoned city, the camera zooms out to an extreme long shot and intense music begins to play. We then wonder what the purpose of this robot is and what type of roll will it have throughout the film. The audience can assume that the robot was left behind to clean up the waste that humanity had left since it is shown cleaning the trash that had overtaken the city. A couple of seconds pass and the camera brings us closer to the robot again. As the intense music continues to play the robot runs over a newspaper. The camera then shows a closeup of the paper and it states, “Too much trash. Earth covered. BNL CEO declares global emergency.” We are then brought back to the question of “Why would earth be abandoned?”. The filmmakers show us that the earth is covered in waste and that it is
