Hernando de Soto was born c. 1500 to a noble but poor family in Jerez de los caballeros, spain. He was raised at the family manner. Soto’s family hoped he would become a lawyer, but he told his dad he wanted to explore the west indies. As de Soto wished he was invited to join Davila on his expedition to the west indies. De Soto was an excellent horseman and appointed captain of a cavalry troop. Setting out from Panama to Nicaragua and later Honduras, de Soto quickly proved his worth as an explorer and trader, he reaped large profits through his bold and commanding exchanges with the naives. Davila, the governor of Darien sponsored Soto on his expedition to the west indies. Francisco Pizarro sponsored de soto on his expedition to conquer peru.

In today’s world, we have many famous explorers that we study in text books. One person that is lesser known is Hernan Cortez. Hernan Cortez was born into a lesser noble family in the year of 1485. He was born by the name of Hernan Cortez Pizarror (aztec-history,com). Hernan was destined by his parents to become a lawyer. Setting his own path, Hernan Cortez became a conquistador instead at the age of nineteen. Denying his orders to not set sail, Hernan took eleven ships and more than five hundred men to the Mexican Coast (biography.com). Later becoming a ruler and a criminal, he died December 2, 1547.

Bartolome’ de Las Casas was a Spanish colonist and a Dominican friar. His uncles and father were part of Christopher Columbus second voyage to America. There were rumors of all the gold, spices and other valuables going around Europe, so the Spanish built small colonies on the island of Hispaniola. Las Casas in 1502 traveled to the New World to serve as an officer of the king. He was given a group of Native Americans forced to serve and obey him. However he released his laborers and spent the rest of his life protecting the Native Americans.

Each explorer has contributed to their country advancing the society in multiple ways. Bartholomeu Dias was a Portuguese explorer that set sail in 1487 to sail northeast into the Indian Ocean. He set sail with “two small caravels and a slower supply ship.” As stated in the textbook American Journey. After Dias was overseas for a couple days, there was a huge storm lasting two weeks. Throwing Dias off his original course, the strong winds pushed him southward in sight of land. Dias had realized that he had sailed past the southernmost point of Africa called a Cape.
