If it weren't for her asking Zeus to help Odysseus go home, Odysseus would not even return home. He would have been stuck on Calypso’s island forever and facing the consequences for blinding Poseidon’s son, Polyphemus. There are countless ways that the goddess of wisdom and war help Odysseus on his journey home. Athena made Odysseus look presentable and disguises herself as a little girl who shows Odysseus the way to the Kingdom of the Phaeacians. So, they could help him return home to Ithaca. She also disguises herself as Mentis who gave Telemachus an encouragement of bravery and advice to find his father and how to deal with his mother’s suitors. She aids both father and son when they attack Penelope's suitors. In the end of the epic, Athena stops Odysseus and rebels of Ithaca from killing each other to prevent them from suffering Zeus’ anger.
Is Odysseus, the main character of Homer’s The Odyssey, really an epic hero? An epic hero embodies several heroic traits such as; having superior or super-human strength; being intellectual and courageous; and being a strong and responsible leader. An epic hero struggles and is overwhelmed with difficulties. An epic hero is on a quest of self discovery, war or some sort of goal. In the Odyssey, Odysseus is on a quest to return home to Ithaca after ten years of war in Troy. Odysseus, during his quest, is forced to venture through a merciless Cyclops, angered Gods, deeply obstinate Goddesses, the underworld, and determined suitors that are after his wife Penelope. Odysseus surmounts
King Acrisius was king of Argos. He had an amazingly beautiful daughter, but he wished deeply for a son, so he prayed to the gods for them to give him a son. Apollo, the god of culture and prophecy, told him that he will never have a son in all his days and that the son of his daughter will slay him. Acrisius thinks of just killing his daughter,Danae, to prevent his prophecy, but fears of the punishment he will receive from the gods for this act, so he instead locks his daughter in an entirely bronze house and guards it closely. What he did not expect is for the king of the gods Zeus to come directly to his daughter and impregnate her. From this comes a son named Perseus. When Acrisius learns of his daughter's offspring, he puts both Perseus and Danae in a trunk and sets it off into the ocean. By luck or by the will of Zeus Perseus and Danae wash up onto a small island, where a kind hearted fisherman named Dictys takes in the two strangers. They live contently with Dictys until Dictys' brother, King Polydectes, fell in love with Danae. He decides to construe a plot to get rid of her son,Perseus, so that he can have her. The plan he comes is to convince Perseus to go and slay the woman-beast Medusa. He thinks this feat impossible by a mortal man, because any man who lays eyes upon her turns to stone. To aid him on his quest Hermes gives him a sword stronger than that of Medusa's scale. He also told him he would need equipment from the nymphs of the north, who's location was unknown by all except the Gray Women who are ray and live in gray. The three sisters share one eye between them all and
In the Odyssey, Odysseus is quite the legend known to people, whether you are high up in the sky with Zeus, or deep in the ocean with Poseidon, everyone knows Odysseus. In the epic poem, the Odyssey told by the one and only Homer, the brave, the godlike human, Odysseus is finding his way home after the big battle victory against the Trojans. This story is about his travels home and how he got caught up in other business. Let’s just say he stabbed Poseidon’s son, had his crew turned into pigs, faced a six-headed monster and whirlpool, and that is to say the least. He may as well be on America’s most wanted list with all the trouble he was causing. Even though Odysseus is a troublemaker, he has multiple great characteristics of a leader. Odysseus, when it comes to his crew and family, is confident, compassionate, wise, and always knows a way to get out of any problem.
Odysseus tends to use strategy over strength to be a hero when it comes to challenges. Instead of beginning with fighting the Cyclops, he takes his time and sets up a plan. Everytime he enters a new island, he does not start telling everyone that he is Odysseus, king of Ithaca. Instead, he charms the people he meets and uses his wise words that cause them to help and pity him. Odysseus represents what being a hero is actually all about. Throughout the novel The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus continuously shows his personality of being an admirable hero to everyone by using strategy instead of strength.
In Poseidon's rage over Odysseus' blinding Polyphemus, he has continued a prolonged punishment from the hubris received. The gods and goddesses sometimes need to intervene on Poseidon's wrath through deception. Athena, Odysseus' and Telemachus' guardian goddess, intervened at the island Phaeacia after Poseidon left. When he left, Athena don a invisibility cloth over Odysseus that changed his physical appearances. Odysseus run into the princess and hand-maidens of Phaenica near the ocean. Nausicca, princess of Phaenica, is persuaded through a dream by Athena disguised as a ship captain’s daughter, Dymas, on the prospect of marriage. According to Bolton, her’s efforts to aid Odysseus come from the motivational hope to marry him. She is told to ask King Alcinous for a wagon with a few mules. Before arriving to the Palace of Alcinous and receiving a lecture on xenia, a hospitality custom created to applease travelers thought as a immortal being that would test the host on giving housing, food, and clothing
Hercules, Perseus, Theseus, and Achilles are all known as epic or homeristic heroes. They have all had their legendary battles and journeys that have classified them as an epic hero. Epic heroes all have good and bad qualities, for example Hercules is known as the strongest man in the world, but he is not that smart. Odysseus is a great example of an epic hero. He is smart, strong, and protected by gods and goddesses, but he does have faults in his actions considering he is only just a mortal. In Homer’s book, The Odyssey, Homer shows how Odysseus is truly an epic hero, by showing his journey back home to Ithaca.
Thetis and Peleus were a famous couple in Greek mythology. Peleus married Thetis, daughter of Nereus. Both Zeus and Poseidon had been rivals for her love, but when it was prophesied that the son born to Thetis would be mightier than his father, they lost interest in courting her. Thetis was a Nereid, one of the daughters of Nereus and Doris, while Peleus was a mortal, son of King Aeacus and Endeis. All the gods were invited at the wedding, except Eris, the goddess of detestation. So she decided to get revenge, by throwing among the guests a golden apple, with the words "to the fairest". Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite argued amongst themselves about who the apple was meant for. Zeus didn't have the courage to get involved into this squabble, so
The protagonist of the Aeneid and known hero to many, Aeneas, was a man of many virtues. His courage and obedience towards the Roman gods are clearly shown all throughout the book, as well as his passion for justice. When he leaves his lover, Dido, at the bidding of the gods, he shows obedience even when it went against his own will. The time Aeneas travels into the underworld to find his deceased father, it shows great bravery. It is even seen by the example of the crew of Aeneas that he was an incredible person, judging by how loyal they were to him. But, even with all these wonderful attributes, Aeneas wasn’t the entirely heroic person we believe him to be.

Darius was born as the eldest of five sons to a leading figure of power in Persia named Hystaspes. Either Cyrus or his son and successor Cambyses appointed Hystaspes as governor of Parthia. Briant says that “the Behistun text shows that he (Darius) held a high military command in Parthia at the time. We also know that he accompanied Cambyses on his Egyptian expedition, since Herodotus places him there in a well-known story.” Herodotus states that at this time Darius “not yet of any particular importance,” an evaluation that only makes sense in contrast to his position as king, his position when Herodotus first introduces him in the course of his narrative. Herodotus wrote “that after a dream that seemed to predict Darius’ reign, King Cyrus
He soon realized that he was beautiful. He thought he could get whatever he wanted and he soon started manipulating people. He was using his good looks to get away with anything. But soon a storm was brewing in Mt. Olympus Aphrodite the Goddess of love and beauty. She was not happy. She started to watch him making his followers disappear one by one. Everyone started hating him, they thought he was using his looks to charm women and girls so he could kill them. But it was Aphrodite. She was jealous she started to turn him inside out and back again. Then she thought that he had enough. She left him alone for many days. But he went right back at it again. She became outraged. She then took all of her powers and made Hephaestus the ugliest man alive. Everyone hated Hephaestus. Rumor has it that if you looked at him for more that 2 minutes you would pass out. But many people felt bad for Hephaestus. Aphrodite became fierce with anger. She went
As Herodotus develops his History he diverges from the main aspect of his narrative many times throughout the text. Many wonder why Herodotus diverges from the main point by introducing minor characters who do not seem relevant to the central theme. Some consider this method of narrative confusing and pointless but I believe that Herodotus has a purpose for including these minor figures and that these characters help express Herodotus ideology towards proper moral and political systems. These minor figures are developed and manipulated by Herodotus in order to express his ideas and he is able to accomplish this because these characters are flexible in the sense that the readers (and listeners) do not have a
