The definition of hero is being noble and valiant on and off the battlefield. The heroes on both the Trojan and he Achaean sides being most notably Agamemnon, Odysseus, and Achilles on the Achaean side, while on the Trojan side the heroes were Hector and Aeneas. All these heroes share common traits and what is expected from them being a hero. In the Iliad being a hero was a elevation in social class, but also came with expected value on the battlefield and being honorable off the battlefield. The role of hero in the Iliad is often defined by the gallant efforts of Achilles and Odysseus, however the role of hero is played by more than Achilles and Odysseus, but even Hera and the heroic efforts of other as well. The role of hero was more than just being respectable and a great warrior in battle.”The hero must use his superior qualities at all times to excel and win applause, for that is the reward and demonstration of his manhood. This meant fighting to victory or dying a horrible death while trying to do so. This also meant when killing others in battle a hero must do so quickly so the person killed would not suffer. Achilles follows this code by killing Hector swiftly so he did not suffer in any way. The hero’s status in the community and his relationship with his family was crucial to a hero’s successes. Honor and self honor were crucial to the role of hero in society, self honor above all was most important to the valuation of a hero.
