Heroism is a general term which means having or performing the qualities of a hero. This past month, in English and Civics, students have researched and have explored the meaning of heroism using the 8th grade themes of Order and Chaos. Specifically in English, students have examined both literary and real-life heroes which have either worked in areas of chaos or in order. In English, students read novels written about heroes in areas of chaos and order. Personally I have learned the nature of heroism through chaos and order by reading the book, The Outsiders. Ponyboy, the main character, has acted as a hero in a time of chaos when he saved the children from a church on fire. Ponyboy risked his own life to save those kids, which was an act
An example is when Johnny, Ponyboy’s best friend and pony went into the burning church to go save children who were trapped inside (Hinton, P.92). Johnny and Ponyboy did it without thinking about publicity or an award for their bravery, they did it in the heat of the moment and without even thinking about the effect it would on them mentally and physically. Another example of heroism is when Dally went into the burning fire to save Johnny who had broken his back and got burned pretty bad, he was not thinking about his own health or how it would affect him he went into the burning church, and carried Johnny out even through his own pain of getting burned (Hinton, P.93). “They’d never believe a greasy-looking mug could be a hero. How do you feel being a hero, big shot?”
A Hero’s Journey: The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton brings to life many notable characters who will long be remembered. The story is centered around the Curtis brothers: Darry, Sodapop, and protagonist Ponyboy. Other members of their greaser gang, such as Dallas Winston, Two-bit Matthews, and Steve Randall, also played a role in bringing the story to life. However, no character stands out more than the “gang’s pet” Johnny Cade. In the novel, Johnny undergoes a compelling transformation from a victim to a hero, evident in his standing up to Dally, defense of his friend by killing Bob, and the courageous rescue of helpless children from a burning church.
Don't Judge a Book by its Cover One kid, one switch blade, and one choice that could change everything. In many books, characters are faced with tough decisions, whether to be heroic or run. In the book The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton there are three main people that are heroic and show it. Ponyboy Curtis, a kid that lives with his brothers, and only his brothers because his parents died, still with his tough life manages to save kids out of a burning church. Johnny Cade is a kid that gets abused by his non loving parents but still saves others emotionally and physically.
When people think of heroes they think of soldiers, superman mostly just people who save others and have this perfect image. In the book The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton there are heroes that don't get that image of being a hero. There are three greasers that have shown that they are heroes throughout the book.
The word greaser triggers thoughts of lower-class boys and girls, who steal from stores and cause trouble. When you think of a greaser you think of a villain. If I were to think of a greaser, I would never imagine a hero. Yet, in S.E Hinton’s realistic fiction, The Outsiders, a gang of greasers remind me of heroes. They may not have superpowers, but they do many heroic things throughout the book that saves the lives of other people.
Greasers aren’t typically associated with the word “hero”, they are known for stealing, holding up gas stations and even having occasional gang fights. However, a hero is defined as someone who is brave, courageous and helps others in need. In The Outsiders, Dally, Johnny, and Ponyboy show all of these heroic qualities, despite their Greaser titles. Because Ponyboy is never shown to be interested in wrong-doing, it wasn't out of character for him to show heroism.
Heroes. What are heroes genuinely? Is it someone who wears a cape and rescues felines from trees, or is it someone who transmutes the world for the preponderant. In the book The Outsiders by S.E Hinton, there is an infrequent amount of people who seem to have a heart. Everyone wants to take that cold outer layer and pare it till you reach the core. The goal is to find heroism in even the hardest places to find it. The Outsiders is a book by S.E Hinton about a close-knit gang kenned as the “greasers.” They emanate from a cursory neighborhood where you’ll find kids doing illicit things and struggling to find their way. The “Socs” are another gang who live from affluent neighborhood and have the spotlight on them all the time. It looks homogeneous to they have it great, but in authenticity their lives aren’t that facile. The “Socs” and “greasers” are adversary gangs with consummately divergent lives, but the same issues. Johnny, Dally, and Randy are heroes in The Outsiders.
Gerard Way once said “All the best heroes are ordinary people who make themselves extraordinary”. There are many people in the modern society that others consider heroes, such as a soldier that is serving our country overseas or a fireman saving people from a burning building. Without question, there are many heroes in “The Outsiders” by S. E. Hinton, however two of the books heroes that have a great impact on the story are Dallas Winston and Johnny Cade. Without a doubt, heroes can be found everywhere doing amazing things. A true hero is someone who goes out of their way to help or save someone or something.
To every situation, there is a hero and a hoodlum. Through my eyes, everyone is a hero in their own way. In the book “The Outsiders” each of the characters show that they have a little hero in them. In my opinion, the characters I thought that were the most heroic in the book are Darrel Curtis, Sodapop Curtis, and Johnny Cade. Here’s why.
“Suddenly, in the red glow and the haze, I remembered wondering what it was like in a burning ember.” (Hinton 22) In the Outsiders Johnny was the true hero in the story. Ponyboy knew without Johnny they wouldn’t be the same. Johnny ends up saving many people's lives because he knew it was the right thing and that is true heroism.
Panic struck the people of New York City. Black, billowing smoke began to rise. The beloved Twin Towers had been destroyed. During the chaos and madness that occurred on the day of 9-11-01, some people acted and did all they could to help those around them, even though they knew obstacles stood in the way. Those people are true heros. Heroism is acting in times of need when obstacles may stand in the way, being willing to sacrifice everything, and not letting setbacks keep from achieving goals and being an inspiration to others.
A hero is defined as someone who in the face of danger steps up and puts others needs before theirs, expecting no reward in return. In the article “What Makes a Hero?” by Phillip Zimbardo, the author expresses that everyone has the ability to help others, whether it is a small deed like leading a guiding hand to someone who needs it, or it can be as intense as pulling someone out of a burning car. The writer attempts to emphasize the importance of doing the right thing by stating, “Few people do evil and fewer act heroically.” (Zimbardo). In addition, heroes act not for the fame or the money, but for their own satisfaction. Knowing they helped save a life is all the reward they could ever want. “The key to heroism is a concern for other people
The Outsiders, a novel by S.E. Hinton, shares moralities that encourage themes of brotherhood and heroism with literary elements - which includes setting, point of view, characterization, conflict, plot, and theme. Each element influences the big idea of flawed heroes and friendships to readers. With her powerful novel, Hinton is able to express the necessity of unity and brotherhood within a community, despite differences in classes, ages, or ideals.
Who do you think is a hero or has shown heroism through their life. In The Outsiders, Ponyboy’s interests and behavior contrasts his gang. For example, he hates to fight unless he has to, unlike his friends who fight for the fun of it or because everyone is doing it. Though he is the oddball of the group he still displayed great heroism throughout the book. In S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders, Ponyboy displays many heroic traits and is a risk-taker. He shows great courage, his personality, and his actions are respected by many people.
What is heroism? Things preformed Superman, Batman, or The Flash? This is what most people think about when they hear the word hero or heroism. Although these characters show heroism, the definition of heroism does not have to be narrowed to the stereotypical hero. Many people have different concepts on heroism. A hero can be a ordinary person like a firefighter or cop. Heroism is a attribute that a person can obtain but they have to choose actions that help others like a fearless firefighter or cop helping others. Heroism also does not call for a reward for being heroic. Heroism is a quality or an act in all of us that a person uses to benefit for the good of other people even if there is a risk.
