Was atticus finch the hero of the novel ‘to kill a mockingbird’ I will be exploring why atticus was and also why some other characters where and where not heroic. Harper lee’s ‘to kill a mockingbird’ narrates the journey of scout finch in a first person view. She is the daughter of maycomb’s upright strong, upright lawyer, atticus finch who is willing to defend tom robinson, an african american man, who has been wrongly accused of rape. Another person in the text is boo radley the unknown person in the city of maycomb who later saves scout and jem finch from getting killed. Through the eyes of scout finch, lee explores themes of like segregation and how that divided whites and blacks in the city of maycomb but most notably he invite the reader to consider what does it mean to be a hero. To be heroic is a person who shows courage and is willing to defend and save others. heroism can take many forms, however for an action to be heroic it must serve others and cost the person something. In to kill a mockingbird, atticus is certainly one of the heroes of maycomb, but he is not the only one. Boo radley displays a range of of occasions where he is heroic. But there are some people that aren’t so heroic like bob ewell who is the town drunk who doesn't like atticus and he tries to kill atticus’ kids jem and scout.
