How Did Hester Prynne Change Throughout The Scarlet Letter

Hester was first viewed by the community as someone who was far worse than a witch by committing adultery. The punishment for engaging in this sin was for a Scarlet A to be placed upon her chest. Once Hester had her child, Pearl, she was scrutinized for raising that “sin” of a child. With the Scarlet letter upon her bosom, and the mischievous behavior of Pearl, the town viewed her as an evil sinner. But through the work of charitable acts, Hester was soon able to be viewed as a sound citizen. The attitude of the town changed drastically over the course of seven years not only towards Hester, but the Scarlet letter as well.
Hester was soon shunned by the community for not only the sin she had committed, but also her secretiveness about who the father was. When Hester and Pearl were publicly humiliated on the scaffold, citizens had openly proclaimed about wanting to hang Hester at the Gallows. On page 32 one of the Goodwives stated “‘This woman has brought shame upon us all, and ought to die-’”. Hester was extremely criticized for the sin she committed by being in an intimate relationship with a man she was not married to. This act caused the community to punish her by placing a scarlet A upon her chest. This A is described to be made with “fantastic flourishes of gold-thread” (Hawthorne 35). On page 112 it states, “so many people in the community refused to interpret the scarlet A by its original signification. They said that it meant Able; so strong was Hester Prynne, with a woman's strength.” The symbol of her sin was soon transformed to mean her character's strength and beauty. The townsfolk soon came to realize that Hester is not defined by her sin nor her Scarlet A, but by the contributions she makes in the community to help
