Hester Prynne Strengths

In the book, The Scarlet Letter by Nathanial Hawthorn, Hester Prynne is often shown as a weak woman who could not resist the cunning temptations of the devil. As she first comes out of the prison and takes her place on the scaffold, she is somewhat shamed by her fellow colonists. In this moment, Hester is completely helpless from the mockery and judgments of the townspeople. Although Hester Prynne committed what was back then the sin of all sins, she shows characteristics of a true protagonist, such as strength, determination, and honesty.

She came to the New World alone, and was able to live through the time where she was, or when she thought she was, a widow. She took matters into her own hands when it came to caring for herself and Pearl. She was able to show Governor Bellingham that she was capable of being a good mother to her young daughter. She says, “. . . and what are a mother’s rights, and how much the stronger they are, when that mother has but her child and the scarlet letter! Look thou to it! I will not lose the child! Look to it!” implying that Pearl is one of the only things that Hester has left in this world. Without determination, nobody would ever get anything done. At the beginning of the story, Hester brings her daughter Pearl out from prison. Immediately, everyone begins to look at Pearl as the product of sin, like she was born corrupt. Despite all of the negative comments, Hester is determined not to let the scarlet letter that she wears on her breast interfere with her relationship with her daughter. Through her hard work and dedication, she is able to stand alone, despite the opinion of society.

After she is convicted, Hester removes herself from the public eye.
