“Hidden Depths” After analyzing the text from Will Smith's life it is clear to me that the characteristics he had can be characterized as a cross between ego and super-ego. In my opinion by analyzing Will Smith's personal life it is clear to see that he puts the priorities of others before his needs. He obeys to the social norms and in my opinion has no representation of an ID Factor. A perfect example of this is looking at his life with his children. Will Smith puts the needs of his family before himself. Thus in this one particular time when he was on tour he had opportunities to be unfaithful to his family however he decided that it was not logical two act-on his instincts or urges. Throughout the book it appears that I can find a few defensive mechanisms used in Will Smith's life however the two prominent ones that can be seen in my opinion would be denial and sublimation. The first clear example of this can be seen and Will …show more content…
It can be seen that in Will Smith's life that he is looking for the affection and approval of others. This can be seen in a particular events of Will's childhood of being a jokester and striving to be the center of attention in extracurricular activities after school with his friends. This characteristic evolved later in his life as the relationships he had with Sheree Zampino and father a son named Williard III. However, this marriage would be short lived as Will would get divorce and remarry to an actress named Jada Pinket. This relationship created two children named Jaden and Willow. The idea behind these relationships emphasize a neurotic relationship the partner may be seen as a person who will also solve all problems, maybe even saving the neurotic person from their issues or themselves. This can cause a dysfunctional theme that is seen in Will Smith’s marriage with Sheree
their lives that caused their relationship to be disastrous. Without these influences in their lives,
Firstly, Will’s biggest role model is his father, but his father Greg does not demonstrate the right traits his son Will can model himself after, to become a better person as he grows up. After Will is chased out of his home by his drug-addicted brother Eric, Will states “I can’t wait until I'm bigger. I’d like to smear him against the wall. I’d smear him so bad.”(Robinson, 9). This negative thought is a result of Will’s father Greg being too violent around Will and creating an environment in which violence has become a normal thing. Often times Eric will do something like throw a party and this will aggravate Greg. Greg will often times resort to loud shouting and violent behaviors. Will has slowly adopted this violent behavior from the poor environment his father had created.
Defensiveness shows up the moment the relationship starts to have a form of conflict occur. Defensiveness is “self-protection in the form of righteous indignation or innocent victimhood in an attempt to ward off a perceived attack.” This is expressed in multiple scenes in the movie but the best example of it was when Will invites Sara over for dinner the day that she learned he was the Date doctor and Will says “Its not my fault….” this is a good example of how he is becoming defensive because he is trying to turn the blame on the other making it seem as it it is them that is making the relationship not work. The way they could have solved this would have been that one of them takes they are responsible for the the problem even if it is on half of the blame. All Will had to do was explain to Sara what his job entitled when they first meet each other.
The greatest pharaoh of all ancient Egypt is Hatshepsut. Hatshepsut was born in 1508 BC and died in 1458 BC. She became pharaoh in 1478 BC and ruled until 1458 BC and was a leader of the 18th dynasty. Hatshepsut was married to her half brother Thutmose II. She originally became regent, then soon asserted herself pharaoh (Ducksters: Ancient egypt). Soon after becoming pharaoh Hatshepsut began dressing as a king. The powerful woman proves herself worthy of such a position by leading troops into battle and creating large monuments to honor Egyptian gods. “Hatshepsut lead Egypt in a time of prosper and wealth. Hatshepsut also brought back many Egyptian traditions that pharaohs before her seemed to forget about.” (khan academy: egyptian pharaohs)
Will wasn't dealt the best hand, when it came to a childhood. The movie doesn't go into detail about his biological parents, it just describes him living in foster care. While in foster care Will had a difficult time, and dealt with quite a bit of mental and physical abuse. While in foster care, will
The movie Good Will Hunting an American Drama Film was directed by Gus Van Sant, and starring Robin Williams, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Minnie Driver and Stellan Skarsgard in 1997. His presenting self was the safeguard to his private self. Will was very much aware of his gift and his enormous potential but shunned it like some burden, or at least that's what he wanted others to believe. He often told Sean Maguire, his shrink with whom he had developed a bond, that his gift was something he didn't ask for, and he'd be perfectly fine working an honorable blue-collar job with his buddies. Despite his assertion regarding his gift as an aggravation Will's actions contradict, for he is asked why he just so happened to get a custodial job in the world's foremost institute for technology, M.I.T if he wanted nothing to do with his genius. Maguire sees behind Will's visage, he realizes Will is a wounded soul who really knows nothing about life for he hasn't experienced it, it is so much more that what he read in a book. It is hard to say what Will should have done for he had a difficult past one that most cannot relate too, or have any idea what it may be like to live it. However, If Will had been a little more open to the people who wanted to love him he would have been much happier. In his quest to never be hurt he was headed for a life where he would never be loved. His thoughts were becoming a self-fulfilling prophesy; where one's expectations of an event make that event more likely to occur (Adler, 65). Had Will been honest with himself and more willing

When conflict occurs within a partnership there is oftentimes a withdrawal from intimacy within the relationship before the conflict is resolved and intimacy can occur again. This is known as the intimacy-conflict cycle. In Little Miss Sunshine the parents, Richard and Sheryl, tend to manage their dissatisfactions with cyclic alternation responses, which are instances when one of the partners voices a complaint that prompts the other’s response in order to resolve their conflict (Galvin, et al., 219). This is seen very
Will is defensive towards everyone he comes in contact with. He experiences incongruence with his cockiness of being smarter than most but he doesn't feel he deserves better than living as a nobody.
Though the film fails to delve into the specifics of his childhood, it does become evident that Will bounced between foster homes and was often a victim to physical and emotional abuse. These childhood factors play a huge role in behavior as an adult. A recent study concluded that, “Toxic childhood stress alters neural responses to stress, boosting the emotional and physical arousal to threat, and making it more difficult for that reaction to be shut off” (LaBier). An inability to rationalize and control emotions and responses after abuse would indeed be seen as true in this film. This can be seen in the numerous fistfights Will found himself in. Despite the fact that Will could typically weasel his way out of convictions, he was convicted of assaulting a police officer. His conviction would turn out to be life altering. When Professor Gerald Lambeau saw potential in Will, he was offered a life that could include more than beers with friends and janitorial work. The arrangement Lambeau worked out
For example, when confronting an old foster home “Friend”, by the name of Carmine, Will unleashed an onslaught of punches, which lead to Will Knocking out Carmine then being arrested for assault by the local cops. When Will saw his old friend, memories of the abuse that his foster family gave him sprang onto Will’s head and triggered his mind to give some payback for everything that he experienced as an abused kid in the foster home. Not only that but his mood drastically changed from the moments prior to seeing Carmine. Before seeing Carmine, Will was planning to have a good time with his friends at a baseball game, But that changed as he saw Carmine at the game as well. Once he saw Carmine, Will was determined to beat Carmine up, as carmine did to him when he was a kid. Clearly in the movie, Will is a mathematical genius, as he was able to solve the problem that Professor Lambeau wrote on the chalkboard outside his room. However when Lambeau confronted Will, after he found out who solved the problem, Will ran away from the professor instead of being congratulated for his success in solving the problem. A valid reason why Will did not accept the praise from the professor was because he had a negative self-image of himself. To understand what a negative self-image is, it is important to know what the term self-image means. Karl Perera, from the website, More-selfesteem.com defines the term self-image as, “ how you see yourself. This may be how you see yourself physically or your opinion of who and what you are which is normally called self concept. It is important as it
Will 's group of friends seem to pick on him and judge him, which questions if they are truly his friends or not and if he truly fits in with him.
