High End Food Company Case Study

This case study starts off with an up and coming worker with high hopes in a fulfilling and professional career. She has the education and experience needed to go down the path she wants for a certain career field and hopes to become one of the youngest national brand managers for a high end food company. With two years of experience and an MBA in her pocket she had her line of sights on a path that would get her there in no time at all. Kate was contacted by a company that was family owned and had not changed its product line or structure in almost fifty years. When examining this organization structure and its application towards some of the theories that we have learned in class the first one that comes to mind is Morgan’s Multiple Perceptions theory in which it uses nine perceptions or images of an organization to express how it works. One of these metaphors that it discusses is referred to as the organization as psychic prisons. As demonstrated in the case study, Kate is subdued in her thinking by being called and suggesting that she is “too aggressive”. Being smart kate immediately saw this as a danger sign and inquired further about what she had done wrong. It was stated to her that any kind of critical thinking that rocks the proverbial boat is frowned upon. This was exactly the opposite of what was pitched to her by the CEO of the corporation. The organizations as psychic prisons metaphor captures this behavior by putting Kate in a place where her behavior in thinking outside the box is frowned upon. “The examples they give such as “They would kill me if I spoke up.” (pg. 18) is similar to what Tom stated in saying “I got my hand slapped so many times my first year, I quickly learned to keep my mouth shut” (case study, pg. 18). Both Tom and Kate are free thinkers and by allowing themselves to be slapped down in the way that they are, they in turn are being subjugated and demoralized into have an unsatisfactory work life.
