High Fructose Corn Syrup: The Diabetic and Obesity Dangers

Abstract: The use of high fructose corn syrup as a sweetener in various food and drink products has drastically affected the American people in the last three decades. Dominating 55% of the sweetener market because of its industrial benefits, HFCS’s increased use has caused dramatic effects in its consumers, including upsetting normal hormonal functions, destroying vital organs, nerves, and throwing off the body’s mineral balance. As the use of HFCS increased, the rates of obesity, diabetes, and related health problems have escalated, resulting in a nationwide epidemic.

Thus by consuming products with HFCS the body neglects to regulate body weight resulting in most often a higher caloric intake and eventually in prolonged weight gain. The lack of insulin and the unbalance of hormones essentially trick our bodies into wanting to eat more, while at the same time storing more fat.
The dangers of the obesity epidemic are overwhelming and the percentage of the population which suffers from this condition is increasing exponentially with the increased use of HFCS. Especially in the United States, where almost a third of the adult population is obese, the problems with obesity are readily becoming more apparent. Researchers predict that about 30 serious medical conditions can arise due to obesity. Some of these complications are type II diabetes, high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, and arthritis. Problems can also extend to hypertension, birth defects, increased chances of various cancers, and impaired mobility.
In correlation with weight gain, HFCS significantly increases the rate of type II diabetes in the United States. Diabetes occurs when there is an insufficient amount of insulin to transport glucose to body cells to be used as fuel. As a result of this, the cells starve, causing the degeneration of tissues and organs.
