The most popular girl in school, and yet she’s not even a senior! Everyone may not have known her personally, yet they thought she was sweet and kind. Everyone loved her! She was voted homecoming princess, invited to all the hottest parties, and she was just an all-around nice person. But one mistake led to the downfall of it all. The downfall of her social life, her school life, her family, and her life in general. 17-year old Alexia Springer passed away on a Tuesday morning due to what police say, a drug overdose. On that sad day, friends let balloons in remembrance of her, news articles were being shared on social media like it was nobody’s business. The death of Alexia is a reminder that the use of drugs is still a problem for teens today even though drug use has decreased in the past 10 years, specifically alcohol which 37.4 percent of 12th graders” used, unlike the “43.5 percent” that used it in 2009 (High School). What many people don’t know are the negative side effects drugs have on people. The main issue is death. The death rates due to heroin overdose increased from just over two-thousand in 2001 to over ten thousand in 2015. Other drugs such as cocaine and prescription medicines have had death rates increase by more than fifteen thousand people. Other than death, using drugs has an impact on “almost every organ in the human body” (Effects). There can be abnormal heart rates and heart attacks. Using drugs can lead to strokes, nausea, poor attention and decision-making, confusion, and permanent brain damage.
