Introduction “Only 8% of high school athletes go to the next level.” There are very few kids that will pick a school sport over a travel/AAU sport. A sport of choice is anyone's decision, but who you play for could be a big factor. Kids from all around the world play travel sports trying to improve on specific skills. This could lead kids into not playing for their own high school team, but going and playing for someone trying to gain recognition or get a higher level of competition. The cycle of kids abandoning their team for a travel team needs to stop; it is taking away from the community as a whole and MHSAA should issue restrictions against students choosing travel leagues over school sports.
Background
Noteably, AAU stands for Amateur Athletic Union, and they were founded on January 21, 1888. Their founder, James E. Sullivan, was very fond of athletics and wanted to provide an outlet for young athletes to have a higher platform for them to get better competition. As of now, the Amateur Athletic Union has over 700,000 participants, coaches and athletes in just the

Personal opinions don’t really take account in this, there was a precedent set before travel teams became mainstream like they did, go to play for your school and represent the name on the front of your jersey, and nothing else. Admittedly, AAU sports offer an unfathomable amount of potential, one of the few faults they admit is allowing athletes to play during their season, or during another season where they could be essential to the team. Children are so indecisive these days that they don’t know when to pick between one sport or another, if they are even playing sports as it is, some kids that should be athletes choose their studies over playing a sport, understandable, but
In “The Case Against High School Sports,” Amanda Ripley, a journalist for The Atlantic, states that America is spending more money on high school sports rather than on academic purposes. “High School Sports Aren’t Killing Academics, “ written by Daniel Bowen, a postdoctoral scholar at Rice University, and Colin Hitt, an assistant professor at the University of Arkansas, discusses the benefits that come out of sports programs to improve the classroom and the school’s social capital. Co-founder of a sports recruiting social network, Kai Sato’s article “The Case For High School Sports,” focuses on how school does not just involve scoring well on a math test but to educate us to be productive in what lies ahead. Ripley’s article discusses how
Last night, both the seventh and eighth grade had good games. The final scores were 18-0 seventh grade and 50-6 8th. Overall, both teams did well against the Titans.
In mid-1999, a student by the name of B.J. Durham transferred schools as a result of his mother’s divorce and financial struggles. B.J. was a cross-country/track star at his previous school, Park Tudor Private High School, and was rumored to be moving for athletically-motivated reasons. Because of the hearsay, B.J. was not granted full-eligibility by the IHSAA but partial. B.J., the plaintiff in this case, was also denied access to the Hardship Exception which would’ve granted him athletic eligibility in full. B.J. and his family took their case to court. The court issued a permanent injunction against the IHSAA’s decision, to which the IHSAA later appealed. The court stood on their decision,
The Ryerson Rams baseball team is left asking questions’ once finding out their hat was not being sold to students at the Shop the SLC yesterday.
Purpose: to connect high school athletes with the colleges that will give them the best chnce to
If the homeschoolers didn’t have to have the same itinerary then it wouldn’t be right for the kids to be playing on the team. If the public school students have to have an itinerary but homeschoolers didn’t then it would not be right for homeschoolers to play on the team if they don’t have to do the same things as the kids that work hard and play on the team. Most of the kids that play on public school teams try and pass all their classes and do the things they are expose to but if the homeschoolers didn’t have to do the same it isn't right for them to be able to play on the same team as kids that actually try. Homeschoolers should have to do all the same things as public school students and have to be passing all their classes and be able to pass a physical. Most parents that want their kids to play on public school sports teams don’t know what it takes in order to make the team, they have to be able to be a fast learner, and be strong. They should make the kids that are home schooled play against the ones from the public school to see what positions the kids get and how god they are and home much they need to train in order to be on the team. Most homeschooled parents just thinks its easy for their kids to play on public school teams but what they don’t get is it takes a lot of time, hard work and dedication. The cons to having a kid play on public school teams as a
The impact of preserving sports in high schools has been surrounded by much controversy as people suspect that it is the reason behind the poor academic achievement of students. Opponents to high school sports feel that allowing athletics to be a part of schools sidetracks the focus of the student body, which goes completely against the main purpose of schools. Indeed, this assertion is completely true and based upon plentiful evidence. High school sports undoubtedly come at the expense of student academic achievement since they divert the attention of students away from academics and they come with far too many financial costs, both of which incur negative impacts on the academics within a school. The bottomline is that sports are harming the education of students, so a school must make the decision between composing quality sports teams or providing high level academics; both of these choices simply cannot occur simultaneously.
When the author described travel teams they only spoke of how much pressure is put on the kids and how it consumes their lives and they speak of travel teams entirely in a negative way. I can understand how looking from a different perspective it can be considered negative but looking at it from actually being on travel team, I look at it differently. When a player goes for a travel team, they know what they are getting into and the work and the pressure it’s going to be but the players love the game because they are already at a higher level of that sport. For example, baseball, if a player starts playing baseball they
And just saying guys, college loves when students get in all these activities, this means that kids really pride in something that they love so much. But, if you take this away from them, then they won’t get into the college that they want to. Kids need to do sports to be healthy, have fun, and follow their dreams. Don’t say I am wrong because I know the pros and cons of playing a sport. Yes, sports are easy and hard, you can get hurt while playing it, but if you love it and dedicate for yourself and others then you should do it. No mayor and school board should take this away from you and others. They want us to have a good education than to do something we love to do. They want us to worry more about school work then to worry about what we have to do outside of school. Kids need the sports to know that they have a talent in something and know that it's something that they love to do. Kids need education in sport right? Yes, yes they do. Kids should be able to go to a college for any activity that they are interested with and know that they love. In conclusion, no mayor or school board should take away a sport knowing that is what you want to do in life and
Ethnography is the systematic study of people and cultures, it is designed to explore cultural phenomena where the researcher observes society from the point of view of the subject of the study. It is the best qualitative method for collecting data often used in the social and behavioral sciences. Data are collected through observations and interviews, which are then used to draw conclusions about how societies and individuals function
It has been statistically proven that out of all the Division 1 sports teams, only 45% of them are actually allowed to graduate. Colleges need to focus on the “athletic-students” now. They need to get the “athletic-students”, who are only in college for the sports, to become “student-athletes”, who are students that are good at sports but have school as the number one priority. Although, most people are only looking at the graduation rates, which are low and need improvement, but they don’t show the entire story. They only show how many people graduate, not all the people that got an education. This doesn’t mean that all the athletes got an education in college. Colleges need to change and enforce a few things to make sure that their athletes are understanding the soul purpose on college, an EDUCATION! They could bench freshman until they can prove that they are ready for the responsibility of going to college and playing sports. Colleges should even make the people that are failing classes, or skipping lessons and lectures without a good reason ride the bench for a game. That should teach them to take their college education more seriously. There are some colleges that are doing things different, and they are
There has been amplified debate on the treatment, education, training of the college athlete. To avoid exploitation of athletes, “The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), formed in 1905, set bylaws requiring college student-athletes to be amateurs in order to be eligible for intercollegiate athletics competition” (Schneider n.p.). Intercollegiate athletics have dramatically changed over the last several decades. Currently, intercollegiate athletics generate tremendous amounts of revenue, remarkably in football and basketball. College sports in America is a
Are high school sports good for kids? Many people believe that athletic sports are good, but they ignore the fatal flaws of these activities. Youth and high school sports are harmful because athletes often get too caught up in winning and get hurt frequently, physical sports also take away from other extracurricular activities.
This shows these athletes would do better off with the professional help of the NBA. A major part of my action plan is to provide these athletes with the option to either attend a college or university for one year and then enter into the NBA draft or become drafted straight out of high school with the understanding that they will have to play for that specific teams developmental league for one year before joining the actually team itself. Ultimately, this plan would allow athletes to receive the financial benefits needed in the short term while still developing and preparing themselves for years in the NBA.
In high school many kids often choose not to participate in extra curricular activities saying that there pointless or that only a certain type of person would do something like play football, or join the chess club. While this type of thinking may get some people through school and through life, can it really be looked at as being a healthy lifestyle? Today sports have proven to be a healthy outlet for students, in dealing with stress in the classroom at home and among their peers.
