Visualize a thirty five year old man listening to the top forty radio stations and watching American Idol, so he can have something to add to the discussion with his co-workers over coffee break. The various types of behaviours stated before are pertained to as conformity. Conformity refers to the process by which an individual's attitudes, beliefs, and behaviours are influenced by other individuals. Except, how do these necessities manipulate a being? Social psychologists have conducted an assortment of experiments and concluded that, through a range of forms of social influence, groups can alter their members’ personality.
In pyschology conformity can be descibed as an indiviual’s tendency to follow the unspoken rules or behaviours of the social group to which he/she belongs to or wants to be apart of. Many psychologists including , Jenness (1932), Sherif (1935) both experimented in psychology, investigating conformity and group pressure. However, perhaps the most famous conformity experiment was done by Solomon Asch (1951) and his line judgment experiment. (McLeod 2007)
Self-awareness is an extremely important quality that is present in every successful person and it allows for introspection about work ethic and the best ways to eliminate outside forces that pull away at a path to productivity. Gary Vaynerchuk, a successful entrepreneur, speaks on this by saying that “the real answer comes down to self-awareness. If you are a CEO or a leader or an operator, you need to be self-aware” (Vaynerchuk). This simple concept can allow people to understand what they need to do to tune out all other influences to concentrate. Nevertheless, this is not a common quality, as it is extremely difficult for people to objectively view themselves, creating a struggle between what others tell them and what they know. A true sense of self-awareness can help people notice and amplify their strengths, as well as minimizing the weaknesses in their work ethic, nullifying the possible distractions. Also, it becomes much easier to simply avoid media when necessary with this quality, as it serves as a partial self-check, disintegrating excuses such as entertaining television shows or social media influences being the reason for poor
I feel like self - monitoring is effective for me because it helps me to safeguard the negative attitudes. In addition, this skill helps me to be able to observe, analyze, and regulate my behavior in different situations. I feel like I tend to self monitor less effectively with situations or relationships, to which they are familiar to me and they make me feel safer.
There is a fundamental human need to belong to social groups especially if people were to live and work together, it is likely that they need to agree on common beliefs, values, attitudes and behaviours in order to get along and fit-in. Thus, we learnt to conform to rules of other people, the more people see others behaving in a particular way or making particular decisions, the more likely people will feel obliged to follow the suit. This is called conformity and can be defined in different ways, Aronson, Wilson & Akert (2014) stated it is the changing of one’s behavior due to the real or imagined influence of other people. According to Deutsch and Gerard (1955), social influence should be distinguished into two types, the informational social influence and normative social influence. The occurrence of social influence has implied to many real life events, which has drawn many researchers to attention. This has lead many researchers to design distinct experiments to try and understand the cause of the conformity, whether conformity is situation dependent, and whether we are able to resist social influences.
Receiving other’s attention is a constant need. People who suffer from this feel uncomfortable when they are not the center of attention and to remain that way they will use physical appearance, seductive and provocative behaviors. Usually their lives are full of drama. They also feel dependent on the approval of others, as a result, they are easily influenced by those around them.
The psychologists believe that individual’s behaviour is linked with the inner thoughts and self-image. The idea is that due to free will people change often. It is humans’ responsibility on how their well-being and lives carry on. This is because we are capable of striving to achieve the best, self-actualisation desire.

Conformity is a concept that has been heavily researched in the field of social psychology. The concept of conformity is a powerful influence on the tendency for people to arrange their thoughts, perspectives, and ideas with others, especially when in a group. This takes away from a person’s individuality because they want to feel accepted by others and therefore, a person will accomplish this basic need of approval through conforming.
