Hiking Up Johnson’s Peak Have you ever been to the best camp EVER, which is obviously CGS? Well, if you haven’t you have to go, especially if you like nature! My favorite part was hiking up Johnson’s Peak. The naturalists that went with us were very nice, and they knew every single answer to every single question someone had. Additionally, when we looked for fossils if we couldn’t find any they helped us find some. Their names were Carolyn, Joelle, and Scott. When we were hiking up Johnson’s Peak we would stop at breakpoints and get a drink of water and the naturalists would teach us something and we would ask questions and do little experiments, or the naturalists would tell us a short story. For example, one of the experiments was was
The first Region is the Blue Ridge Mountains this region is located in the North Eastern part of Georgia. This region is home to The Blue Ridge Mountains, which is the southernmost point in The Appalachian Mountain Chain. It is home to Georgia’s highest point, Brasstown bald at 4,784 feet above Sea Level. The First American Gold Rush took place here in 1828.
Teen ager would argue that to be independant is to be free. Although parents would say their child’s desire for independence is strenuous like an uphill climb. This is confirmed in W.D. Valgardson’s short story “Saturday Climbing” where Barry struggles to climb a deceiving rock face which is analogous to his relationship with his daughter. Not only if Moira will go to college in the upcoming year but also which campus she will attend.Through this narrative, Valgardson suggests that when parents provide copious amounts of security, conflict will arise and children will rebel; only when a balance is found between security and allowing independence will the relationship be harmonious.
Fire has long been understood to have an impact on the ecosystem of our native woodlands, but it is only recently that we have come to understand its importance in maintaining the ecosystem. This report takes samples of the flora structure and growth in two different areas of Anstey Hill Recreation Park. The first was last burnt in 1995, and the second burnt in 2012. The results of these samples can be compared to data sampled in 2011, when the 2012 burnt area had not been burnt since Ash Wednesday in 1983.
In the poem “The Writer” by Richard Wilbur and the short story “Saturday Climbing” by W.D. Valgardson, both of them describe children’s growth in parent’s point of view. Somehow, parents realize children always meet difficulty along with their growth, and parents sometimes are unable to help them, whereas both parents and children have to struggle for themselves.
Approximately 20,000 people died while traveling on the Oregon Trail. Which took place in the mid 1840s, when Americans started seeking economic success by moving westward. The justification for the expansion was due to weakness in the Mexican government and economy. Since Americans regarded Mexicans as inferior, despite the statement, made by Thomas Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence, that “All men are created equal”, many of the citizens thought that the Mexican citizens did not deserve to keep their lands. America was not justified in its western expansion due to the lack of morality behind putting one person’s comfort above the safety of another.
In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the mob turns away and goes home because the men were getting distressed by all the questions Scout was asking, and the mob realized that they cared for there children at home. At the courthouse, Scout recognized Mr. Cunningham in the mob. Scout asks him a lot of questions, and talks to him about Walter. Mr. Cunningham does not respond to her right away only right before they leave to go home he says, “I’ll tell him you said hey, little lady,” he said. Then he straightened up and waved a big paw. “let's clear out,” he called. “Let's go home boys.” (154) From this quote it sounds like Mr. Cunningham was getting bothered by Scout asking so many questions about him and his son. It was distressing to the mob
In Rome, the inception of Christianity was not embraced with open arms to say the least. This was mainly due to Rome’s emperors feeling threatened by the newly founded religion. “Meetings between Christians were prohibited, and the clergy were persecuted with much vigor. [Christians were] considered to be a danger to the state….”(Shlosser 179) Since the religious practice of Christianity was deemed illegal by officials, the use of symbols was essential when it came to not only signaling a meeting place but also for the continuation of the religion. A fish is an example of one of the various symbols adopted by Christians.
Before settlers began to move to Oregon it had already been inhabited. Native Americans lives in Oregon this was their homeland. With the Study of Oregon, anthropologists had come to the conclusion that as many as 180,000 natives had lived in Oregon long before Europeans began to arrive. Therefore as the Oregon Trail became more popular and more people pushed west it brought an uprising of conflicts between pioneers and Native Americans. This interest in the west began with in 1803.
In the middle of the 19th century, the Oregon Trail was the main pathway for American emigrants who were searching for new lands. While most Oregon bound traveled a route that passed by landmarks, Missouri, Kansas, Wyoming, Nebraska, Idaho, and Oregon there was never one set of wagon ruts leading west. The route was considered too demanding for the women and children or covered wagons to navigate. In 1836 that's when it all changed by Marcus and Narcissa Whitman. BothWhitman, took a small party of wagons from St.Louis to the Walls Valley. In 1843 Marcus Whitman, helped lead the first major wagon train for around 1,000 settlers along the Oregon Trail. In about ten years, 50,000 settlers traveled by the Oregon Trail each year.
The landscape is stark, but the beauty startling. The expanses seem to welcome, even beg you to explore. It’s a call you are unlikely to be able to resist (assuming it’s not scorchingly hot and you are not hungover from a big night in moments-away Las Vegas), nor is it one you should. In front of you is one of America’s grand spectacles, Red Rock Canyon.
The Appalachian Trail was also the product of a daydream atop Stratton Mountain, the brainchild of Benton MacKaye. MacKaye was an off-and-on federal employee, educated as a forester and self-trained as a planner, who proposed it as the connecting thread of "a project in regional planning." His proposal, drawing on years of talk of a "master trail" within New England hiking circles, was written at the urging of concerned friends in the months after his suffragette-leader wife killed herself. It appeared in the October 1921 edition of the Journal of the American Institute of Architects, at the time a major organ the regional-planning movement. MacKaye envisioned a trail along the ridge-crests of the Appalachian
Family relationships are built upon trust. This trust is the glue of a relationship that can make or break a teen parent relationship. An individual can gain trust by proving what they are capable of. W.D Valgardson short story “Saturday Climbing” demonstrates this gain of trust through the character of Barry, a single father. Barry initially has a lack of trust in his daughter Moria, however throughout many demonstrations of strength and intelligence Moria is able to gain trust from Barry. W.D Valgardson short story “Saturday Climbing” suggests that in a relationship one gains trust in an individual after realizing what the individual is capable of.
It is amazing how some experiences stay so crisp in my memory, that if I were to close my eyes, I could almost swear that I was there right at that moment. It's as if my body can almost taste the sweet air, feel the cold, wet breeze on my skin, and recall the scent of the pine trees towering above our heads. Hiking in Payson, Arizona, after a snow storm is one of the best places I have ever visited in order to collect one of these memories. Payson is a great place to take the family dog hiking, but also you will be able to appreciate the beautiful landscape Payson has to offer, with it being conveniently located just a brief drive from the sweltering heat of the Desert Valley.
I looked up at the morning sky painted in hues of purple and pink. The crisp air tickled at my nose. I stood in front of the open passenger door of the truck while waiting for Jacob to give me further instructions. I found Jacob on one of those mountain-climbing adventure websites. He had the highest rating of all the Mountaineers featured.
For my Language Perspective Essay in this class, I wrote about my perspective and experiences on language, referencing to Malcolm X and Christine Marin from the book. By connecting my experiences of improving my articulation with Malcolm X and my experiences of cultural identity and discrimination with Marin, I was able to prove that the power of language is evident based on its influence in culture, expression, and identity. After learning about the Toulmin model, arguments, and rhetorical appeals in class, I have become more knowledgeable of how to write an essay that clearly states my claim and supports it with sufficient evidence. If given the opportunity, I would change my previous essay to address my mediocre writing style, my lack of appeal and analysis, and general formatting.
