Hildegard Peplau’s Theory The best strategy to help someone who is in need is by establishing a good relationship thru the magic key of communication. One of the most famous theorist in the history of nursing, recognized as the nurse of the century was Hildergard Peplau. Her Theory focused on the interpersonal relationship between the nurse, the patient and the patient’s family, and developing the nurse-patient relationship (Potter 2009). Peplau has had a major influence on nursing since she wrote the first comprehensive, theoretically informed nursing theory after Florence Nightingale 's. Her perspective was psychodynamic and her theoretical writing has influenced almost every area of nursing practice. Peplau’s theory derives from a few decades ago, when nursing was still perceived as an occupation and not a profession. She developed her theory in 1940’s but published her book “Interpersonal Relationships in Nursing” until 1952. According to the Article by Pamela Reed during before this book was published nurses were considered "doers" for patients and "followers" of physicians ' orders. Peplau’s work and teachings helped catapult nursing from an occupation to a profession.” These ideas provided a foundation for nurses to understand health from a nursing theorical perspective and to establish interpersonal relationships with patients as the significant context in which nurses facilitate patients ' well-being (Reed 1).
