In many stories, there are symbols that contribute to the meaning of that story. However, most symbols do not come right out and show themselves. Symbols are details from the story that need a close eye to inspect in order to find the meaning of them. A lot of the time, symbols have one meaning that they all come together to make. In Ernest Hemingway’s “Hills Like White Elephants”, the three most prominent symbols are the bead curtains, the placement of the story in between two railroad tracks, and the hills around them. The meaning that is produced from these symbols is that neither the man nor the woman wants to face the fact that they have contradicting opinions on the problem at hand. The bead curtain shows separation from two opposite ideas occurring at the same time. One one hand, it symbolizes the difference in conversation of this couple and the people inside the train station. The elephant in the room is the problem that is not said, which is the abortion. Whenever the conversation gets too heavy for the woman, she always brings up the hills. For example, when the man says how the woman should be more amused and happy, she says “I said the mountains looked like white elephants. Wasn’t that bright?” She feels uncomfortable, which makes her bring up the hills because they represent the elephant in the room. They both refuse to bring up the actual problem because it is like if they do not say the problem, then it will not be real. The woman also remarks towards the end of the story that the hills look less and less like elephants. This means that her view is changing and that she maybe wants to keep the baby after all.
