Hill's Three Stages

Hill (2014) book was based on three stages exploration, insight, and action. All three stages are salient to success as a therapist. I think that the exploring stage is the most important because if therapist don’t ask the correct questions they can’t have a proper understanding of why the client is seeking treatment. This can also lead to malpractice if therapist are not mindful about the situation. I have strengths and challenges at each of the three stages of helping. In the exploration stage, one strength for me is observing. I am very good at paying attention to nonverbal behaviors. I always thought that nonverbal behaviors can give a person a better understanding of how a person feels. Sometimes as people we have a harder time explaining how we feel and we are better at showing it. For example, a depressed person may not be able to conceptualize how they feel but a trained therapist can have an understanding of they feel by looking at how they react. A therapist should use everything for data collection, from how a person talks about a situation to their nonverbal behavior.one …show more content…

Based on my performance at National session, I was able to gain insight and understand my client's issue. Asking open question is imperative to get the client to talk and more importantly being comfortable in the environment. My challenge within this stage is interpreting. Hill (2014) defines interpretation as interventions that beyond what the client is saying. This is an issue for me because when I was working with my client as National Session time went so quickly. It was as if as soon as the session started it was over. So many things were happening at one time it was hard to slow things down and interpret what was going on. Therefore clearly, one way for me to address this issue to slow things down and relax. I need to find a way to become comfortable with
