I found it fascinating that one doesn’t need to know how to dance a certain style to choreograph it. Kathy Woods does not dance hip hop, but she still has created choreographies that have been in the finals for dance competitions. I liked how Adam said that he thinks that showcasing is a better way to show all the hard work put into a choreography rather than performing in competitions. I think this it is awesome that he loves to dance and enjoys entertaining people with his work. I thought it was unique how Kathy incorporated classical music with a hip hop choreography and created something that people enjoy watching. Something that I also found amazing is how Kathy has traveled all over the world. She has been to almost every state in the
Some of the movements executed by the dancers are similar to those executed by dancers in a stepping performance and also in a tap dance presentation. This presentation falls into the group of the new trends of modern dance, in which the choreographer are taking more and more liberty with various dance combinations, and including strong messages in their work. I would definitely attend other dance performance, not only from this company, but also by other companies; and would also recommend this performance, especially to people going through a dark period in their life. This performance finished convincing me that dance is surely the most communicative of the art forms, and that a single presentation can convey more than one
Lauren Anderson’s career is impressive she has several accomplishments. I was surprised to hear that when she first started dancing Ballet at age 7 she hated it. When she explained how she was not even able to go out and play with her friends I realized how even children must make sacrifices to excel on their dance dream. I was also surprised by how the prices of the pointe shoe have increased since she started dancing and how the Houston’s Ballet budget is more for shoes than anything else. Another interesting comment that she made was when she talked about how as a dancer she had the opportunity of traveling all over the world and how her favorite place is New York. I believe this is great that dancers get the opportunity to see places around
The elements used in this concert were videos of a timeline of African-American dances. This was very helpful because it allowed the audience to know what time period they were looking at for a certain dance. There were different varies of costumes. There were costumes from the tribes danes, spiritual dances, 1902' dances as dancers, and etc. The dancers did an excellent job with combine the costumes to the era and it actually looked like pieces from that era. The lighting was very good and it allowed for the mood to be seen in the dances as well. When a dance needed to evoke a spiritual mood, the lighting would evoke that mood by only allowing light on the dancer and no one else. If it needed a joyful feeling, all the lights were on showing
The way Casey would execute the moves and how quickly she learned to glide through the steps was so incredible. Her teacher would called her a natural. The teacher assistant, who was also an older student, told her she was the best one in the whole class. When it became time to start choreographing the dances for the recital, Casey was put dead center. One part was when the dancers were close together and Casey was still put front and center. She nailed
"He Kept us Out of War" (World War I Quotes). This quote was a democratic slogan stated during the election of 1916 on behalf of President Woodrow Wilson. This slogan makes an attempt to refer to the good leadership qualities and decisions that President Wilson made to keep the United States of America out of the war and that is why he should be elected again to serve as President. Though this made a valid argument to show that Wilson was smart to keep us out of war, many events took place that continued to anger the U.S. which eventually made them declare war on Germany on April 6th, 1917 (World War I). In doing this, they broke their policy of non intervention. The United States held out of the Great War for so long because of
Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes, Byron Hurt examined the troubling aspects of hip hop music. Hip hop was said to have brought masculinity back to the game. One aspect of this troubling masculine culture is the idea of hyper masculinity. The term hyper masculinity is defined as the exaggeration of male stereotypical behavior, such as an emphasis on physical strength, aggression, and sexuality. These three attributes create the disturbing facets of what hip hop music portrays to the media and the public.
The strong presence of military occupation resulted from a bottom-up process in which settler’s desires for the economic prosperity and opportunity compelled them to migrate and stake their claim to these territories. Interactions between the local Hawaiians, international tourists, and the US military shaped the theory of settler colonialism. Trask writes “Just five hours away by plane from California, Hawai’i is a thousand light years away in fantasy”. She continues saying “Hawai’i is the image of escape from the rawness and violence of daily American life. Hawai’i-the word, the vision, the sound in the mind-is the fragrance and feel of soft kindness. Above all, Hawai’i is ‘she’, the Western image of the Native ‘female’ in her magical allure”

Saturday, February 25, 2017 at the Oscar F. Brockett Theater, the UT Dance Repertory Theater presented a dance concert titled Momentum. The performance featured eleven unique pieces that were meant to “investigate and celebrate diversity in dance” with the community. These pieces presented, were a tribute to two important African American events in dance: The First Negro Dance Recital in America and Parallels. These two pieces are important to African American culture because they helped transform contemporary American dance.
Nathaniel Nicholes Mrs. Lopez Inquiry Project 5/12/17 Dance has been a part of human culture for years, centuries even. African dancing, beyond popular belief, has impacted American culture tremendously, and even other cultures immensely with its many unique rhythms and dance styles. A culture forcefully brought over to American soil has left a forever lasting mark within U. S History mentioned or not. African dancing has influenced most of the different dance genres of today.
Music Television gave a generation a voice. With the awakening of MTV, 1983 was a golden age for music television. The inception of hip-hop music videos caused wardrobe to be an important part of an artists “armor”. Rappers used outfits for promotional purposes. Certain outfits would be worn in pictures, performance, and
Dancing is a historical tradition. Hip-hop dancing has been alive at social functions for centuries, and Popping and Break dancing are the old school days gone by. In recent years, Hip-hop dance has proved its long lasting presence in our lives. It is in our media, our music and day-to-day social functions. It isn't usually taught parent-to-child so people are seeking schools where they can learn. With Dance sport being considered as a medal sport in the next Olympics, more people will be exposed to Social and Hip-hop dance.
It’s the early 1970’s in New York City, block parties in The Bronx are filled with love and peace while DJ’s are playing soul and funk music. Eventually DJ’s began to isolate these percussion breaks in the songs and this is what unknowingly gave birth to hip hop. Fast forward 40 or so years and today you can see how this art form has progressed. I mean yes, we have Chief Keef and Riff Raff but hey nothing is perfect. Artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Vince Staples, Big K.R.I.T and many more have thoroughly established hip-hop to be sophisticated creativity, scathing self-critique while remaining diverse and inspiring. Hip-Hop has transformed itself into a professional form of expression from routes of not quite yet detailed and rookie beginnings.
Dance has been a natural movement form since the beginning of time. The origin of dance is unknown, just as the knowledge of the benefits of dance are unknown to many in our society. Many people do not enjoy dancing and also do not fully understand the positive benefits that come from dancing. Researchers such as Edwards, Duberg, and many more have found countless mental and emotional benefits of dance that originate from movement patterns, brain connections, and even expressions of emotion. Many are aware of the physical benefits of dance, but beyond the physical benefits of dance, there are also emotional and mental benefits that come from dance as well.
Hip-hop dance is a popular and energetic dance genre, usually accompanied by hip-hop music. It has enjoyed popularity among young people all over the world. I have been interested in hip-hop music and dance for a long time. I can show my love for life and exercise my body by practicing hip-hop dance. Young people like hip-hop dance because they can invent their own moves. It offers young people a new way to express their own personalities and emotion. Hip-hop dance also shows that they feel good about life and that they are not afraid of problems. With a history of about 40 years, hip-hop dance first began in the 1970s in the US (Pabon, 1999).
