Hip-Hop culture is often confused with the Hip-Hop genre. Hip-Hop as a culture is more than just the music, it is a way of life. Hip-Hop music as a genre has changed from being Rap to including Pop. Hip-Hop is an evolving culture, constantly changing as the older generation fades and the newer generation carries on the legacy along with incorporating it's new style. The new generation of Hip-Hop or rather Hip-Hop today focuses more on Partying, music, and Swag rather than the original elements: Deejaying, Emceeing, Graffiti, and B-Boy or break dancing. These elements are still seen in today's Hip-Hop but have adapted a new style.

In todays society there are many different types of genres of music, but the one that tops the charts is Hip Hip. There are different eras of Hip Hop, but the most popular would be the 90’s era of Hip Hop. When asked the question, “What is Hip Hop?”, many people answer it in different ways. To some, Hip Hop maybe associated with blaring music, negative language and violence, such as drug crimes and meaningless killings, but to others, Hip Hop means a lot more. Hip Hop is a way of expressing feelings as well as a way of life.

Hip-hop culture includes four main components: rapping, DJing, graffiti art, and break dancing. At its start, hip-hop was inspired by a change of other art forms, many of which still influence and inspire hip-hop artists today. Hip-hop all started around the1970s in the South Bronx in New York City by African American teenagers. Hip-hop is defined as an African American urban culture associated with fashion, rap, break dancing, DJing, MCing and graffiti art. Hip-hop has been viewed to promote violence, gangs, strong profanity, drugs and alcohol, sex, negative attitudes towards men and women. Hip-hop culture characteristics involve being able to express yourself without worrying about fitting in, reflecting the community from where they are coming from. Little people fail to realizes that Rap music has some positive effect on the world such as the youth.

In the early 70's, a Jamaican, DJ known as Kool Herc attempted to combine his Jamaican style of disk jockey, that involved reciting improvised rhymes over the dub versions of his reggae records (Davey 1). He also invented turntables, which kept the music going, with the occasional voice on the top of records, which started the roots of rap music. Over time, the culture broke into mainstream, spread around the world, and young people who did not have much to do, created not only multi-million industry, but have also created a way we can speak to each other all around the world. Hip hop is linked to other music such as rap which is embraced by urban black population. It is raw self-expression, sometimes features expletive lyrics, and violence. “Hip hop artists spoke to despair and pain of urban youth and the poor who were often without a voice. The rappers themselves were, the product of that reality, and it was conveyed through their lyrics” (Muhammad 1).

Hip-Hop culture is all about the music and self-expression. Hip-Hop is a genre of music that stands on its own two feet. It is also one of the fastest growing music genres when it comes to cultural impact. Music today varies from pop to rock and roll to country all the way to hip hop. Music is a way for people to express their thoughts, emotions and dreams.

To become a DJ when hip hop was blossoming one would require to have two turntables, a DJ mixer and a wide collection of disco records. Not only that, one would also require some kind of speaker system to play the music out loud. The concept of DJing is to take two different or the same records and find their break down part and play that over and over to create a beat. The break down part is the part in the song where it is mostly beat focused and the people can really start dancing to the music. This was discovered by a DJ known as DJ Kool Herc. According to an article titled The History of DJing the author states, “Campbell noticed something peculiar: the dancers grew ecstatic during certain parts of the records--the breaks” (Adaso). Clive Campbell better known as DJ Kool Herc saw that the dancers only came out to dance during those parts of the song. So since DJ Kool Herc was already a DJ he decided to switch it up and play mostly the breaks. And people enjoyed that, so now at most of the parties, people were dancing most of the time.

Artist Nas once described hip-hop as. “That feel of music with urgency, music that speaks to you. It’s blunt, it's raw, straight off the street from the beat, to the voice, to the words.” The use of language in hip-hop opposed to other musical genres is the essence of the material itself. Language is more important THAN any instrument or any sound effect, it sets the tone using many devices such as rhyming or metaphors in order to share a message.

In Rap music, there is a musician that creates words based on their feelings and mood. After creating the words, the musician ties the words to a beat that sounds catchy and appealing to listeners. In rap music there are no limitations to what can be said. Musicians can use profanity, violence and hate to express their feelings. Also, there is a length of the music that is being created. Originally, for the music to get played on the radio or television the musicians must make that the song is no longer than four minutes. Rap music reflects me because of the style that musicians create.

Hip-hop 's evolution into a composition distinct from R&B ensued around the time that drum-machines and sampling technology became widely available to the general public at a financially affordable cost for the average consumer. Turntablist techniques (i.e. scratching, beat mixing, matching, and beat juggling) ultimately developed along with the breaks, producing a base that could be rapped over, in a manner similar to signifying, as well as percussive breaks (an influence found in Jamaican dub music). The art of manipulating sound and creating illustrious music were few of the techniques that identified the aeon of the hip-hop genre: Three of whom will be presented - The Diamond Era (1983 – 1988), The Golden Era (1989 – 1993), and The Silver Age (1994 – 1998).
