Historical Development of Nursing Timeline Development of the nursing practice has e started as early as the 1850’s with Florence Nightingale. She was the founder of the first nursing theory. From her foundation over the years nursing has blossomed into a great career and practice to where nurses and patients both benefit from the advances in theories and practice. The relationship between theory, research, and practice is circular in nature. As new knowledge and discoveries emerge in each of these realms, the cutting edge of the art and science of the discipline of nursing evolves. Nursing science is the knowledge base nurse employ to carry out the function of nursing. It brings the knowledge to the profession while the nursing profession challenges the science to develop new theory and research. Influences on Nursing Science There are many things that influence nursing sciences and then inevitably nursing theories and they come from all different parts of our life. “Nursing theories have developed from the choices and assumptions about the nature of what a particular theorist believes about nursing, what the basis of nursing knowledge is, and what nurses do or how they practice in the real world” (George, 2011). What influences our lives will influence the way we think and develop theories for the future. For example, in the 1950s Virginia Henderson identified 14 components of care.
