El Grupo is self-described as, “… a youth cycling organization that provides youth with experiences that are fun, skill-building, and bike centered, so that they can acquire the self confidence and leadership skills to be active and healthy members of the community” (El Grupo). El Grupo was started in 2004 by Ignacio Riviera de Rosales who was involved in a teaching a bike riding class at Central High in Tucson. The first year of the class had 8 students without any athletic background and all riding less than ideal bikes. These humble beginnings soon blossomed into a thriving organization, and by 2015, 225 students have participated in the program. The Chicano movement was part of the American Civil Rights movements of the 1960s and 1970s. It sought political empowerment and social inclusion for Mexican-Americans. The term ‘Chicano’ was originally used as a derogatory label for the children of Mexican migrants. There are many opportunities for students to become involved with organizations that incorporate the transition to college alongside having that family feeling. At the University of California, Riverside, one of the many family oriented organizations is Latino Union. Latino Union is an organization made up of mostly, but not limited to, Latinos. The most prevalent theory is that they were nomadic hunters who came from the Asia mainland and across the then frozen Bering Straight into Alaska. Regardless of their origins their main region is now the Americas, both North and South and it is expected that the Latino population in the United States will increase by 40% in the next ten years (US Census 2010). Their culture and society is steeped in tradition and understanding and appreciating their culture is imperative for any person working in the social services field.
