Unlike many other states Nevada’s statehood is very much connected to the Civil war and is not just a gambling town. Nevada was the second of only two states to be added to the Union during the Civil War. Some people from Nevada or that know a lot about Nevada may call it by one if its three most common nicknames such as, Battle-Born State, Sagebrush State, and Silver State. Nevada got its name from a group of Spaniards who called it Nevada which translated to English means snowy, because of how the mountains were always covered in snow during the winter. Today Nevada is part of the United States, which has not always been the case, Nevada became part of Mexico in 1821, and was not in possession of America until the Mexican-American War in 1848.When Nevada was finally taken by the United States, it became part of the Utah territory and was no longer called Nevada, until silver was discovered in the Comstock Lode in 1859 which led to a population boom, which led to Nevada becoming its own territory, but it still hadn’t made its way to statehood yet.
The Nevada constitution is the document that governs the citizens of the state of Nevada. In general, state constitutions are usually much longer than the United States constitution and Nevada’s constitution, which was sanctioned in 1864, is one of the state constitutions that fall into that category. When comparing the two, Nevada’s constitution is just short of being twice the length of the United States constitution, but Nevada is still shorter than the constitution of twenty-six other states. The reason Nevada’s constitution has such length is because of the in-depth parts it contains, which are protracted from the provisions of the United States constitution. The reason for Nevada’s constitution having such depth is because of the
It is generally understood that the United States is built upon the principles of democracy, in which the majority consensus of the citizens helps to define the shape of issues or elections. However, in assuming that the Constitution - the document upon which such practices are founded – is inherently democratic is only partially accurate. Indeed, it has been frequently argued that the U. S. Constitution is representative of the rule of law from a federation as opposed to a pure democracy; in a federation, elections occur among the majority of the citizenry but this process results in elected officials who then determine the direction of the country. In short, a federation
This is Arizona, a state that is well known for its desert Basin and Range region. Its state nicknames are The Grand Canyon Region, The Copper State, The Valentine State, and The Apache State. These nicknames mean and were chosen because the Grand Canyon was located in Arizona, copper was in abundance, Arizona’s date of statehood was February 14(Valentine’s Day), 1912 and the Apache Indians inhabited Arizona at the time. These nicknames were chosen on 1959. Its state motto, “Ditat Deus”(God enriches), was chosen in 1863 because Arizona is abundant in many things. Arizona’s admission date was February 14, 1912 as the 48th state.
In the case of Lobato v. the State of Nevada, it is hard to see how someone could be convicted with evidence that does not make very much sense at all. My groups responsibility was to cover the prosecution side and five pieces of evidence of the case using the information from the news article by Joshua Longobardy titled, “Kirsten Blaise Lobato is accused in a gruesome slaying. Did she do it?”. Upon the detective arriving to the scene of the crime, they removed the debris that covered the body from complete view. This debris included a full sheet of cardboard with a bloody footprint on it and a clear plastic bag wrapped around the groin region. Once this was removed it was discovered that the penis had been sliced off from the base, as well as six of his teeth were found near his body. After several days they were able to identify the man as Duran Bailey, a 44-year-old black male. Another piece of evidence recovered at first with Baileys personal belongings was a piece of chewed gum. When the detectives called Lobato in for questioning, she gave them a statement of how she pulled a knife on a man who tried to attack her. This statement however was for a completely different altercation than what the police were questioning for. Other evidence that came into question were the tire impressions near the entrance of the enclosure, fingerprints lifted from the dumpster, and a foreign piece of hair on Baileys groin region. The argument being made from
In January of 1848, gold was discovered at Sutter’s Mill, which is now in present-day California. From 1848-1849, 300,000 people rushed to California in search of gold. These gold-seekers, nicknamed “Forty-Niners”, came from all over the world. Most of the Forty-Niners came from the rest of America, but some even came from Europe, Australia, Latin America, and Asia. Because of the huge gold rush, roads, churches, schools, canals, cities, and towns were established in the California area. This new economic explosion influenced California to become a state in the Union.
In addition to keeping a better watch on the Mormons, becoming a state would allow more and more “Gentiles” to settle in Utah and disrupt the overwhelming majority of Mormons. As seen in Nebraska’s admission to the Union (1867), the population increased almost ten times, from 120,000 to just over 1,000,000 in 1890, only 23 years later. (Dalstrom) Congress hoped that by granting statehood to the mainly Mormon territory of Utah there will be an influx of non-Mormons to balance out the population. Congress turned out to be accurate. Utah’s population at
As stated in the text for much of the early history of Nevada it was never considered as a place for settlement but instead used for quicker and easier trails to California or trapping expeditions. The Mexican-American war, the movement of the Mormons into the West, and the search for mineral wealth all indirectly ended up leading to the settlement of the territory.
Utah was founded by Mormons in 1847. At the time, Utah was under control by Mexicans, but after the Mexican-American war, the U.S gained the land. Mormon leaders wanted to create Utah into a new state called “Deseret”, and to have Mormon leader Brigham Young as a State Representative. Congress disagreed, but Utah was formed into a U.S territory. Utah had mainly Mormon settlers, but when Californian troops found mineral deposits, non-Mormon settlers began coming. Utah became a big mining and agricultural state.
California applied to enter the Union in 1849 and became a state in 1850.The gold rush caused a major boom in the population. William Weber Johnson summarized the increase in population in his book, “During those half dozen years the momentum of the gold rush had drawn more than a quarter of a million people... in contrast with the mere 14,000 that had settled before the discovery of gold”
Politically I would say they are dissimilar. South Carolina usually goes red for election time is a Republican state. Nevada is a swing state. In the 2012 election Nevada lit up blue for the democrats so it was expected Hilary get the delegates from this state but not so much from South Carolina.
People from Mexico, Chile, China, and many other areas came to find gold. The population increase included many workers from China, who came to work in gold mines and later would help link the west coast and east coast with the building of the Transcontinental Railroad (“California Gold Rush”). California's overall population growth was so huge that the California became incorporated into the Union as the 31st state in 1850. This was two years after the United States has acquired California from Mexico under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the Mexican-American War (“San Francisco Gold Rush,”
Have you ever been to Las Vegas? What a town. Known as Sin City (I won’t envision why, perhaps betting, prostitution, naked demonstrates?) This is one town that needs to put its police power to the undertaking. The police power is a standout amongst the best organizations in the U.S. The legal framework is positioned as one of the best in the nation. Likewise in this blend is its lawyer administrations.
With the admission of Alaska and Hawaii as states in 1959, the idea of non-contiguous and non-North American states became real. Nevertheless, even with their striking similarities Puerto Rico and U.S Virgin Islands have not been admitted to the union while Hawaii and Alaska have. This leads to the “the curious case of statehood”. What exactly makes territories viable for admission into the union? As a power directly giving by the U.S Constitution, Congress has the ultimate authority who and who does not become states of the union. However, even with the precedent set in 1960, Congress has failed to elevate the status of America’s Caribbean territories because it did not
For some people, the title is scandalous. For others, it is seen as progressive. Either way it is a factor in the early shaping of the identity of the “Biggest Little City”. People come from all over the world to get divorced in Reno and have to stay in Northern Nevada for a minimum of six weeks before they can legally be divorced. Most others that know of Reno, see it as mining town with a “saloon crowd” mentality. Reno will benefit greatly from the discovery of silver at Tonopah (1900) and then two years later, the discovery of gold at Goldfield (as well as a dozen smaller strikes in central
