The controversial issue of whether or not Child Protective Services are doing their jobs properly, has grabbed nationwide attention. Child Protective Services is the name of a government agency in many states of the United States whose mission is to respond to reports of child abuse and neglect. Some of these cases may include physical abuse, sexual abuse, and mental abuse (Wikipedia). The child welfare system is corrupted. The parents and guardians who are accused of abuse are automatically labeled as guilty and will have to prove their innocence; instead of being innocent until proven guilty.
Child protective services (CPS) is a government agency located in many states across the United States that helps children stay away from harm and abuse. Child protective services and its agencies plays a big role in society. Children of all ages are assaulted and most of the times by a dearest loved one. Child abuse is defined as any type of neglect upon a child including mentally, physically, and sexually.
Child abuse has been a big issue in the world for a long time. There has not always been child protective services like there is now. Children would be abused and neglected and nothing was being done because it was not being reported. The New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children was the world’s first organization in the late 1800s which was dedicated totally to child protection (Myers, 2008).
Child Protective Services (CPS) is a complex system of assessments, investigations, and conclusions. CPS is the central agency in each communities child abuse and neglect service system. It is responsible for ensuring that preventative, investigative, and treatment services are available to children and families endangered by child abuse and neglect. As a result, CPS workers must perform a variety of functions when responding to situations of child maltreatment and play a variety of roles throughout their involvement with child protective clients. Child welfare systems typically receive and investigate reports of possible child abuse and neglect; provide services to families that need assistance in the protection and care of their children; arrange for children to live with foster families when they are not safe at home; and arrange for reunification, adoption, or other permanent family connections for children leaving foster care. When you look up what the Child welfare system it says,
Child Protection Services are dedicated to protecting children and young people who have been harmed, or are at risk of harm.
Did you know in 2012 that 1,640 kids have died because Child Protective Services did not act upon their situations? CPS stands for Child Protective services; that reports of child abuse or neglect. The government thought that CPS would have helped more than harmed, but because of their statistics CPS has been cancelled and now there is a new program which is called DCS (department of child safety). CPS has failed in their position by not focusing on all child cases; CPS only puts effort towards cases they picked. If we were to continue with CPS the way it is , so many more kids would die. CPS was put down because of the ratio of kids that have passed away under their care.
It is a reasonable argument that child welfare service entities are necessary as it is all too frequent that child abuse/neglect cases are heard all over the nation and is ultimately a world health issues. Increasing social issues such as unstable families, poverty, crime, poor education, lack of access to health care and mental health services are some of the factors that contribute to this continuous epidemic that affects many people from various socio-economic classes. The Children’s Bureau was created in 1912 by Lillian D. Wald and Florence Kelly (“The story of…”). The main goal for this bureau was to create standards that would impact the way children were treated. There are several issues that the Children’s Bureau covered. These issues include infant and maternal death, child labor, orphanages, child health and recreation, delinquency and juvenile courts, family economic security, abused and neglected children, and foster care (“The story of…”).

Most people are familiar with the foster care system and impacting legislation like the Social Security Act. This policy was created and reformed in part by the United States Children’s Bureau. The Children’s Bureau is a United States government agency created to serve the needs of families, women and children who are underprivileged. Men were to bring home the money to provide for their families, while the women would focus on being the caretaker for the children and family. This proved to be an obstacle sometimes because people who were not in line with the Bureau’s ‘traditional values’ were
