While some may agree that it is not appropriate to keep selling and buying a newspaper every few months, using several different strategies and laying off employees that are essential to the newspaper in order to keep it alive has certainly not work in the past years. The price tag keeps falling every year, while, the amount of money needed to keep publishing daily editions increases. Currently, the newspaper does not have the capacity to investigate and report all the potential news in the City of Philadelphia as the number of staff has immensely decreased in the last several years. Subsequently, there are numerous local business owners in Philadelphia that are fighting to find a solution to the problem. The Philadelphia Inquirer has been in existence for almost185 years. This is a journal that was published from 1852 to 1854 it had many contributors to its articles but the editor and proprietor was John F. Tompkins M.D. Called the Farmer’s Journal it contained many different kinds of articles all about farming. It covered the use of manure on cropland to how to use Indian techniques on raising potatoes. It had a section on the cost of hay, seeds, and many other items. Raised on a farm it was interesting to read the differences of how things have changed from then until now. The overall look of this newspaper, made it difficult to determine where one article would start and end. The search feature on the database made finding the articles much easier. I found it interesting that not every article had a headline, which also made it difficult to read. An interesting note was the language and the proper wording was so different from the current sentence structure used today. The majority of the terminology that was used was unfamiliar. The variety of the topics was interesting. Some of the articles were very brief and others were long and boring. It would be interesting to know what type of individuals that wrote the articles in the newspapers at that time.

The timeliness of the news article is demonstrated as it was made before the featured article (reported the South Carolina house voting which came first before the Governor signing the bill). The headline, lead, and the article itself have no emotions/tone when read (headlines, the overall article, and the lead are to be neutral when read by the reader). The lead answers strictly the 5 Ws and how it doesn't feature a list, a then-now, and other methods of writing leads for features articles. The structure of the news article utilizes an inverted pyramid. The more important information is featured at the beginning of the article (the amount of essential information decreases). For example: the writers discuss the ruling of the South Carolina House of Representatives within the first paragraph of the article (“The final vote in the State House of Representatives, 94 to 20, was well above the two-thirds majority required to move the bill to the desk... in Charleston.”) and decreases as one goes through the article. The last paragraph does not tie back tie back into the lead (another feature for news article). “It means the world to us,” Mr. Rutherford said, “that we can move a symbol of division off of our front yard.” has no affiliation to the lead as the lead did not state the impact/feedback of what took place.
