Physical education is defined nowadays as a “systematic instruction in sports, exercises, and hygiene given as part of a school or college program” (Park). When most people think of the term “physical education” they think of it as “a broad, inclusive term comprising the fields of physical education, health education, safety education, athletics, recreation, dance education, kinesiology and so on” (Zeigler 1). It may sometimes be referred to as physical training or gym class and mainly is taught in grades kindergarten all to the way up to your senior year in high-school in the United States. The history of physical education dates way back to the Greek and Roman times and has slowly evolved into what it is now today. There is a …show more content…
So things such as running, jumping, swimming, wrestling and boxing were all part of the Roman education system and were used for military preparation as well. There were also sporting events that the Roman Empire put on in honor of the gods they worshipped similar to that of the Greeks (Siedentop 24-25).
Back in those days of the Greek and Roman women were not able to participate in physical education and sport to the same degree as men, so they never had the same chances that men did. Greeks would never let women partake in physical education, but the Romans were not quite as harsh letting them occasionally do dancing or light exercise. Once the fall of the Roman Empire happened it became what was known as the dark ages for physical education (Siedentop 25). It was a period of 1,000 years “in which physical activity, sport, and fitness diminished in importance amid political and economic chaos” (Siedentop 25).
The Roman and the Greek civilizations were a great influence on the European culture and philosophies. Europeans then eventually came to settle in America (Siedentop 24). This meant that early ideas and perspective on physical education in the United States were based on European traditions and beliefs which were based on the Roman and Greek culture.
Physical education did not really start to make a comeback until the seventeenth and eighteenth century. This is around the time when the European settlers were migrating
From kindergarten to twelfth grade, one may be required to take many different types of physical education and health classes. In the first few years they more than likely would have learned some of the basic movements: hop, skip, jump, and gallop. As the years pass, they would go on to learn how to play different sports and proceed to specialize in different aspects of sports. Today the United States is facing an epidemic in which parents could outlive their children due to unhealthy bodies. The physical well being of the younger generation is a hot topic in many different school districts, as many children are not active enough. However physical education was not always promoted to children throughout history. One of the first
One of the most important goals for educating the students of today is preparing them to live a successful life not only mentally but physically as well. Students ultimately have to understand and be experienced with many physical activities(e.g. running) in order to accomplish a physically healthy lifestyle. Both the National Physical Education Standards(AAHPERD) and the Mississippi Physical Education Frameworks assist educators in designing a curriculum that teaches students about the necessity and fundamentals of physical activity. There are obvious differences and similarities between both educational standards as far as their content and structure goes. However, both the purpose and function of both standards are still analogous. Both standards inform educators of what students should be able to know and do at specific grade levels like the College and Career Readiness/core standards. Similarly, like with all educational standard, both standards functions as a model and guide that includes suggestions of teaching strategies, learning objectives, and much more depending on which one educators choose to use when developing their curriculum. All in all, both standards were comprehensive in providing information on how to design a curriculum that disciplines students into healthy individuals with effective implementation.
During the Roman Times from (31 BCE to 476 CE) sports were both things that many did in their daily life and as well as Roman Fighting games. Not all Roman games were violent and played by men. Many Roman kids would swim, ride horses, hunt and fish, play board games during their leisure time. Sports were very important to the Romans because some had a religious meaning to them.
A couple of the sports and entertainment played and watched by the Ancient Rome are followed: “Swimming: Swimming was one of the favorite activities of Roman boys, and it was widely practiced in the Tiber River, next to the Campus Martius. Most of the Roman
“The authors discuss the growing evidence that strenuous physical activity is not only healthy for the students, but improves their academic performance” (Sattelmair & Ratley, 2009). This article discusses physical education programs and relates it back to the importance of physical activity and cognition. This research suggests that traditional physical education is unnecessary, as they advocate for a program that “emphasizes cognitively, socially, and aerobically demanding activity on a daily basis, one that focuses on personal progress and lifelong fitness activities by encouraging models of physically strenuous play that are engaging, challenging, and enjoyable to students” (Sattelmair & Ratley, 2009). Research evidence is provided on physical education programs that are successful in the development of mental health in the
Physical literacy is much more than physical activity or being the fastest, strongest, and most agile. According to Higgs et al, 2008, physical literacy also consists of being able to read the environment and events, then responding appropriately (as cited in Mandigo & desLibris, 2009). Therefore, it is not only the knowledge of the skills, but being able to apply one’s skills to different sports, the real world, and social situations. More recently, PE curriculums emphasize physical literacy in terms of the whole child—affective, physical, and cognitive. One must not only be physically fit but must also have the knowledge, understanding, confidence and satisfaction. It also means flexibility in responding to various
A person might remember in elementary school a certified physical educator instructing the class, for example, on learning to run, balance, stretch, and climbing rope. Then, in spring, a big relay event would happen, and all the students were able to race, or show off the skills they learned through the year. At these events, every student won a prize, whether, first, second, third, or recognition of achievement for each race. Today, many people still have all of their ribbons to remember the achievements during physical education class in grades kindergarten through sixth. Today, children should have an opportunity to learn fitness in grade school, additionally, when physical education is paired with a healthy diet children will be able to develop into adulthood making essential life choices about fitness and wellness intuitively. Physical education is extremely important for our children in grades kindergarten through sixth in public schools in California, specifically, the effects it has on psychological development, the effects it has on physical development, and the benefits into adulthood.
There would be three objectives to my proposal as children are divided into three sections in school. Objectives for this policy would be to increase the amount of physical activity in grades K-12. Objective one would be to increase the total number of minutes of physical activity in grade schools from 90 to 180 minutes per week. The increase in total allotted time for physical activity would constitute 36 minutes of physical activity per day. Objective two would be to increase the number of necessary physical education credits in middle school. Currently, there is only one credit required for all three years of middle school; objective two would increase that number to three. Children would need to have a semester of physical education every year as opposed to one semester in three years. Objective three would be to have a minimum of three physical education credits required for high school graduation. This objective would again increase the number of required credits from one to three. Again, children would be forced to participate in high impact physical activity one semester per year.
One of the researcher’s concerns is that a negative experience in Physical Education class will have a negative effect on a student’s outlook and desire to be physically active as an adult. The Surgeon
Gym class is loved or hated. Girls, on one hand, cannot stand to be bothered with changing and messing up their hair while boys live for the invigorating feeling of running around and being an “immature jerk” many girls would mumble under their breath after being pelted with a ball. Gym class can be a very stress reliving state of time, others it is a time to gossip and relax. But why is there such a distinct state of difference between the love and hate of gym class? Physical education has been questioned for many years by students. “Why do we have to take it?” “It’s the stupidest class ever.” Although it is the most hated it should be the most loved. Physical education should not be about worrying if you are going to be hit with a ball it should be about letting go and moving, loosening your body. Since physical activity does enhance your mental and social process. So why not get a little competitive and play some basketball.
Like any other subject, physical education is vital for students and is definitely essential in a school’s curriculum. A main factor for PE being an essential part of the school’s curriculum is it promotes a healthy lifestyle. The school setting for a child should not be effective by their outside situations, so if a student can’t be physical activity at home he or she should receive that opportunity at school. Students may come from low-income families that makes in hard for students to learn locomotor skills, so it hinders children from developing skills they need. By having physical education in a school’s curriculum is a way for all students to be at equal play fields and it also helps with their social skills not just the physical aspect of PE.
Some examples of Roman sports are running in races, shown in image one, and weightlifting, shown in image 3. When weightlifting, Romans usually didn’t lift dumbbells made specially for this purpose, but instead any heavy items they could find, such as boulders and logs. They would sometimes make competitions out of this, and see who could lift the heaviest item, or who could throw a heavy item the farthest. Image eleven represents another sport, chariot racing. Chariot racing was possibly the most popular sport in Roman times, but it was also very dangerous, similar to Nascar racing, but with open chariots and everyone was
Physical education is instruction in physical exercise and games, especially in schools. It’s a well-known fact that America is continually trying to win in front of the pack in every competition. Nonetheless, as of recently, we have been winning a few battles that we ought to lose. Being one of the fattest nations on the planet is unquestionably not anything to be proud about.
Physical education provides both the knowledge and activities to students at an early age to develop their habits that will shape their future wellness. The benefits of physical education are not only as the name implies physical, but they are also psychological
Both physical education classes and athletic programs offer opportunities for students to develop their physical
