MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welding has been around since World War Two. Later on, welders realized that non-inert gases such as carbon-dioxide, could be used as well. Today, it is considered to be GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding), but is still very commonly referred to as MIG welding.
