Belonging to one of the largest ethnic groups in Asia, the Hmong language has an ample number of speakers, however the distance between the communities has prevented the widespread use of the language and has also created several distinct dialects. In order to prevent this language from unnecessarily going extinct, moving forward with preventative preservation measures, specifically in regards to education, is imperative. Such measures may include immersion schools, computer programs, and bilingual education.
Background and History
Hmong is a minority language of the Hmong–Mien language family and it is spoken by approximately three million people. It has no official status in the countries in which it is spoken, which include China, Vietnam, Lao, Burma, Thailand, France, and the United States. The language consists of a number of dialects due to the widespread speaker-base, many of which are immensely distinct from one another and thus could be considered separate languages.
The two major dialects of Hmong are White Hmong [Hmong Daw] and Green Hmong [Hmong Njua]. Green Hmong [Hmong Njua] is spoken primarily in southwestern China, Northern Vietnam, and Laos, while White Hmong [Hmong Daw] is spoken in countries to which people of the Hmong language immigrated such as France and the United States (Hmong Language).
Diaspora
Hmong villagers worked alongside the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency in their fight against North Vietnam in what has been called a "secret
There were three main languages which also consisted of various dialects. Darug was the largest spoken language. The Gadigal people spoke a dialect of Darug. Dharawal was another language spoken which also consists of various dialects based on regions. Many Indigenous Australians could speak more than one of these languages as Central Sydney was where many tribes would come together, so it was quite common that many tribes or clans would be in this same area at the same time, allowing them to learn the languages of each others tribes.
Although many people may not be aware of the Secret War, it was a war that greatly affected the Hmong people and changed their lives forever.
In Hmong there is a total of eighteen surnames and it does not matter what dialect the person belong in. The eighteen surnames have sets of rules that all Hmong dialects have to up keep. First, two couple of the same surname cannot get married, whether they are of different dialect because people of the same surname are consider “brother and sister” and there will be no incest. Second, to up keep the forbidden; in the surname Yang, males are not allowed to eat the heart of any animal because it is forbidden. There are forbidden thing other surnames cannot do and it goes the same for all dialects. Third, Shamanism religious guideline; during the funeral it forbidden for the relative of he dead, to eat spicy and very dry food because by eating spicy and dry food it deprived the loss loved one to crossover. There are more sets of rules, but I felt these makes a stronger argument. What notion the people may be seeing, there is a change in newer generation and we do not see each other
Kalihi is the geographic area, but Census data exists for Honolulu, Hawaii. Hawaii is one of the most diverse states in the U.S., but current Census information does not filter minority groups such as Chuukese or Filipino. Rather the Census data categorizes various ethnic groups into such as Pacific Islander, Asian, and Native Hawaiian. The assumption is that the Hawaiian culture involves more collectivistic families than individualistic families. Collectivist families have more group cohesion and collectivistic cultures make decisions based on the betterment of the group. The statistic that proves the previous statement is there are 1,673 households out of the total 8,383 with 7 or more people living in one household (Census Bureau, 2010). The languages spoken in Honolulu include Tagalog, English, Hawaiian, and Pidgin, which is a blend of Hawaiian and slang words.
The language of our people is English, like Americans, and Mandarin, due to Chinese influence. English is taught in the beginning of a child's school experience up until graduation.
During what is called The Secret War (1953-75), thousands of Hmong fought in the Royal Lao Army led by General Vang Pao against the communist Pathet Lao and North Vietnamese military, on behalf of the U.S. and France, who promised to let them come to the U.S. and receive veterans’ benefits if defeated. France and the U.S. broke their promise, and thousands of Hmong survivors and veterans were forced to evacuate their country by foot in the most agonizing and dehumanizing of conditions, many dying along the way. Many of them, despite all odds, managed to make it to refugee camps where conditions were also miserable. Finally, when the Hmong were forced to resettle, many were brought to the U.S., but not after some delays and without ever receiving veterans’ benefits. They were placed in certain cities in the U.S., including Merced.
Hawaiian language, also known as Ōlelo Hawai‘I, is a Marquesic language related to other Oceanic languages of the Eastern Malayo-Polynesian group in the Austronesian language family. Hawaiian is a language with no known dialects, however, some linguists note that there is a slight distinction between Hawaiian spoken throughout the islands, and Hawaiian spoken at the university. The language is named, “Hawaiian,” after the group of islands where it was first developed and recognized; Hawaii is a volcanic archipelago located in the Central Pacific, hence the language relation to other Oceanic languages (UCLA, Language Materials Project). Previous to the influence of the United States, there were a reported 400,000 to 800,000 Native Hawaiian speakers living in Hawaii.
Originating from the multi-ethnic plantation workers in the plantation era, early 19th to 20th century, the HCE is made up of multiple languages: English, Hawaiian, Filipino, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Cantonese (Hargrove). If someone is new to Hawaiian Islands, you can listen to the Pidgen and you can hear sentences that are actually mixed up from multiple languages. For example, take the sentence “I just went pau make shi shi”, which in translation means I just finished urinating. The word “pau” means finished which comes from the Hawaiian language and the word “shi shi” comes from the Japanese language meaning urinate. HCE is an multi-ethnic and history rich language and I have used it
The Pacific has the fewest speakers in the world. There are 1,531 languages in threatened and 916 languages endangered. Asia has the most threatened languages in the world, Indonesia having the highest rate within Asia. Hawaiian language only has 1000 speakers, but it has stabilized in this number and there is now school instruction in the language. Amahai is a nearly extinct language in Indonesia with only 50 native speakers.
“I lost 17,000 men, almost 10 percent of the total Hmong population," General Vang Pao said. "The Hmong sacrificed the most in the war and were the ones who suffered the most” (Vietnam War 'secret Army' Chief Vang Pao Dies in US). The C.I.A. recruited the Hmong as their allies when the communist Pathet Lao joined the Laotian government because the U.S. feared that the neighboring countries would fall into communism too. During the Vietnam War, negotiators from different countries agreed that Laos would remain neutral under the Geneva (Thompson). But because the United States feared the spread of communism, the C.I.A. directed a covert operation in Laos known as the Secret War. The Hmong people were abandoned, forgotten and treated poorly after
Once spoken freely by his ancestors, the age-old patois is applied virtually nowhere due to the intermingling of basic for thousands of years. Han hasn’t heard his native tongue since he was last home. Now, it seems it'e only spoken by two significant groups from
Hmong is a Miao-Yiao language spoken primarily in Southern China, Thailand and Laos. According to Ethnologue.com, there are over 5.7 million people who speak the language all around the world. Over 95,000 Hmong people have settled in the United States. Hmong is monosyllabic and tonal language. This means that it consists primarily of one syllable words where the tone of a word affects the meaning. The Hmong dialect is branched from the Chuanqiandian dialect into two separate ones; known as ‘Njua’ green and ‘Daw’ white. Hmong is closely related to the Miao language spoken in Southern China. However, it is not too known because various people living in these areas gradually adopted phrases and words from other cultures, to produce a whole new way of speaking.
To begin, it’s been approximately four months since I’ve started volunteering at the First United Methodist Church’s Sunday School. During my thirty – four hours of volunteering, I’ve found out that the pastor wants to try and combine the church’s language (Hmong and English) services. During my time when I was volunteering, I was able to narrow my community problem to the importance of languages because it is slowly becoming lost to the new generation. As many also know of this problem, how do we try to conserve our spoken languages?
The language of Micronesia is mixed with several languages that belong to the Eastern and Polynesian languages. The official language, which is taught in schools, is English. Many natives use English as their secondary language, using their main dialect
The dominance of English was captured in a recent government survey that showed English is the most widely spoken language at home, followed by Mandarin, Malay and Tamil. Only 12 percent of Singaporeans speak a Chinese dialect at home, according to the survey, compared with an estimated 50 percent a generation ago.
