The relationship of violence and “the good” in society can be looked at from two different perspectives. Girard sees “the good” or when violence in beneficial in society when it is used to stop other violence within the society, “Thus the “regular exercise of ‘good’ violence” is used to counter “bad’ violence.” (Pg. 239, Girard). Hobbes on the other hand believes “the good” is when the human’s natural violent nature can be stopped through the good of reason, the reason laws were brought about. When Hobbes talks about reason he refers to the relationship between the means and the end.
