The intense sounds of the mixed nation crowd filled the ears of many in Kristin’s Hall. USA verses Canada for a gold medal in the 2nd annual Winter Youth Olympic games in Lillehammer, Norway. An experience that not even the most immense words can put into perspective to true form. Perhaps a hockey rivalry that is bigger than the game itself. A crowd of 4,000 giving off the perception that they are breathing down your neck. My heart pumps at a rate that only a cyclist can relate to. The mental focus that I have to have is essential because of the vast amount of distraction presented. The score was 1-1 heading into the final period, either a dream come true or a dream rather forgotten. A Youth Olympic gold medal on the line something which can only be obtained in men’s ice hockey by seventeen individuals every four years. In the back of my mind I can hear the whispers of USA’s 4th place finish in men’s ice hockey four years back in Austria, knowing that regardless we were going to make history tonight. The game continued as a back and forth affair it seemed as if our teams were very closely matched. A group of US athletes acted as our student section roaring to motivate us to prevail. There was only five minutes remaining, and we were on the power play. A man advantage with five minutes left in a tie game for two minutes what else could you ask for? I stepped on to the ice I was so zoned in I could hear my skates shuffling across the ice as a skated to my position. The play was tough but our team was skilled, and had the ability to overcome adversity. I got the puck on the blue line passed it across to my teammate who had a god given passing lane to another teammate who shot it right through the red metal posts, with three minutes left in the game we had taken the
The “Miracle on Ice,” where the United States defeated the Soviet Union in the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid, New York will forever be known as one of the greatest moments in American sports history. This game was about more than just sports though, it signified American strength, even when faced the greatest adversities. The United States was suffering through Vietnam, Watergate, and the wrenching upheavals of the 1960s. Many believe this game was even the beginning of the end for the Cold War. The Soviet Union had won the gold medal in six of the seven previous Winter Olympic Games, and were the favorites to win once more in Lake Placid. The team consisted primarily of professional players with significant experience
When Team USA beat the Soviet in 1980 it was important for the US hockey world because that team was seeded seventh entering the game against the Soviet Union. During the 1980 Olympic run the average age was 22 and all the players that year were both amateur and college players and the Soviet’s team was mainly professional and experienced players. This win gave coach Herb Brooks a place in history because he did something no other USA coach has done for the last twenty years and that is beat Russia, and he was named sportsman of the year in 1990.
A tale can be told in several different ways. Many people are aware of the astonishing feat of the 1980 USA Olympic Men’s Hockey team, who were huge underdogs in their bid to win the gold medal against the powerhouse USSR. The movie “Miracle”, directed by Gavin O’Connor, is the dramatic journey taken by this team, from the anxiety-filled tryouts in Colorado Springs, Colorado, to the exhilarating game against the USSR in Lake Placid, New York. The book, “The Boys of Winter” written by Wayne Coffey, is based on the same events, but takes a less emotional, more factual approach to the subject. The purpose of this essay is to compare these two resources, and to discuss how they differ in tone, style, and theme.
When America pulled off probably the biggest upset in all of sports history, America was instantly going nuts. People who have never seen a puck in their life were even going crazy. It wasn’t just hockey fans that were able to realize the size and importance of this upset and even bigger was a win in the ongoing Cold War.
Synopsis: When the USSR hockey team took on the United States in the 1980 Olympics, more than just a gold medal was on the line. Probably one of the most political games in history, this particular game symbolized one of many “battles” of the Cold War. In the, movie Miracle, this story of the underdog is told over, with a strong focus on American coach Herb Brooks and his relationship with his team. The movie highlights the extremely hard work done by the team and the demanding Coach Brooks unrelenting passion to win no matter what. The crux of the movie lies within the game with the Soviet union and those stomach wrenching moments before the game even started, as players knew that at this point it was make it or break it.
The most memorable moment in hockey history came thirty-four years ago with the 1980 Miracle on Ice. The Americans defeating the dominant Soviet team at the Olympics was not only an important triumph for USA Hockey, but for the entire nation. Contrary to popular belief, the underdog win was not only the result of a miracle; it was also the result of a hard-working team led by Coach Herb Brooks. With increasingly negative views on the position of the United States in the Cold War, the Miracle on Ice and the gold medal win lifted the spirits of the nation and brought hockey into the American spotlight.
History has framed the Miracle On Ice as one of those rare sporting achievements that transcend sport. The two hockey games that comprise the “miracle” – the 4-3 win over the mighty Soviets and the 4-2 gold medal clincher against Finland – are credited with lifting Americans from a decade of gloom and despair, reviving patriotism and foreshadowing a national renewal.
As I lay dying is considered to some as one of the most notable novels of the twentieth century. Reading the book, when you analyze the structure that Faulkner instilled, this made the story very difficult to comprehend. To support my point, the story is composed of fifteen different points of view from characters in the story. The novel does not have any chapters whatsoever, but rather “sections” and each section looks into one point of view from the fifteen characters. Each section often switches from different events and settings in the story. Aside from the novel’s complications, the storyline was very intriguing due to the chain of events that happened.

In 1994, the Canadian Federal government compromised and voted to make hockey Canada’s National Winter Sport and lacrosse Canada’s National Summer Sport. Which Sport should be named Canada’s true national sport? Hockey is in the blood of all Canadians. Millions can vividly remember the first time they put on a pair of skates and stepped onto the ice. Providing nation-wide entertainment, Canadians are overcome by emotional realization that “Canada is hockey.”- Mike Weir. Generations of Canadians were brought up listening to Hockey Night in Canada every Saturday evening on the radio. It is more than just a sport in Canada, it defines the culture. Look no further than the five-dollar bill. One will observe a group of children playing a game
Fighting in NHL games is pretty common. Injuries as a result of those fights also happen, but things did not go quite as planned for the Anaheim Ducks' Kevin Bieksa when he had a one-punch takedown of Radko Gudas of the Philadelphia Flyers on October 24. Bieksa had so much momentum behind his punch that after Gudas fell, Bieksa landed on top of him. While many people who saw the impressive punch might assume that Gudas would be the player who would suffer a lasting injury as a result of the fight, it is actually Bieksa who will be unable to play for a while.
The day the team got together and fought threw a tough battle facing pinnacle high school. It was our second home game and our record was 1-2. After all of the hard work we had put in over summer, we realized we could not lose, especially in front of our home crowd. At the beginning of the game we did our usual warm-ups, I have never felt so much adrenaline pushing threw my veins in my life. After the warm-ups the whole team got in a big huddle, we chanted a chant that will never be forgotten and one day make history for the pride. After the chant we got ready for kick-off, lined up and ready to go. The crowd started cheering at the first 2 seconds of the game “go pride go, go pride go”. This made the whole team nervous, not just because there was so many
When someone starts an endeavor, it requires dedication along with the person working diligently towards finishing the endeavor. Therefore, it is the finish that is ever so sweet, and it appears that these two hockey players are enjoying the sweet ending. Additionally, someone can see the two players out on the ice rejoicing after achieving some type of objective. Furthermore, they have sweat rolling down their face and back. Ready to throw their gloves in the air out of elation, the teammates come together synchronously to bear-hug one another. Both players have their hockey sticks clutched in one hand, but at any moment could drop it to celebrate with their other teammates. Moreover, the fans detect the raw emotions spilling out of the players,
According the April 2010 addition of Forbes, 63 percent of organizations use some form of internal coaching, and more than half of those who don't plan to. Yet, in companies where coaching is already practiced, half of the managers spend less than 10 percent of their time coaching others.
We are the Canmore Avalanches. We qualified for these championships as the first team ever of Canmore to do so. Be proud of that! Consequently, we have come together today to win the Canadian national championships, two months from now and return to our hometown as legends.
