My piece was titled Hold My Hand while the topic I focused on was the issue of Hurricane Matthew, specifically in Haiti. Haiti has always been known to be a total punching bag for natural disasters. In 2010, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake devastated the small country - scarring the land and its people. Moreover, just this October, another force, Hurricane Matthew, tore through the Caribbean - meaning that Haiti was destroyed, yet again. Although we are members of the United Nations, I do not believe that America and its government should be forced to help outside nations. However, I do believe that it is in the interest of the American people to do what they can to support those in need. Haiti is the poorest nation in the northern hemisphere, yet
On January twelfth 2010, a deadly earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 hit the coast of Port au prince, Haiti for 35 seconds, killing around 200,000 and leaving approximately to 1.5 million of the population homeless including kids who became orphans and vice versa in a matter of less than a minute. Before the earthquake, the way of life was not as bad as portrayed back at home, most of the news broadcasted in the mainstream media were exaggerated news, negative light and unfair tales to make Haiti look inferior.
NEW YORK—Starkies-Davis announced today a total donation of $8 million to organizations providing direct help to victims of the earthquake in Haiti. Starkies-Davis clients generated $6 million through global trading commissions
I personally have not experienced a disaster. However, I have heard about a lot of megadealths from the media. The most recent is Hurricane Matthew. Hurricane Matthew affected the Caribbean, Florida and North Carolina. It is known that hundreds of people have died and over one thousand people remain without houses and clean water in Haiti, four people have died and one million people lost power in Florida and seven people have died, about 760,000 people still remain without power and over 880 people had to be rescued in North Carolina. I am sadden by the destruction that this hurricane has caused. I have a lot of friends in Florida and a lot of family in North Carolina all whom are safe. It took a couple of days to ensure everyone was safe.
On January 12, 2010 on of the world’s deadliest earthquakes struck Haiti. In his book, Humanitarian Aftershocks in Haiti, Mark Schuller analyzes the presence of humanitarian aid agencies following the disaster. He discusses the impacts the aid had on the environment, development and globalization of Haiti.
In 2010, a devastating earthquake hit Haiti. Desiree LaFave was one of four oregon midwives to respond. She was on the first plane into Haiti, alongside doctors and other midwives. Desiree LaFave should be recognised as a hero for her bravery, passion, and determination.
Attention Getter: Who here has heard of the horrible plight of Haiti? Haiti has been through constant suffering everyday due to economic difficulty, lack of food, lack of clean water, hurricanes, and possibly everything that could go wrong with the world. I’m sure no one in their right mind would want to be there now but does anyone know how Haiti became as it is now. Well that’s what I’m about to tell you.
Haiti is located in the Caribbean between the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. It is located west of the Dominican Republic on the western third of Hispaniola. This means that Haiti is bordered by water on three out of its four sides. The terrain of Haiti is mostly mountainous. Elevation ranges from 0 meters at the Caribbean Sea to 2,680 meters at Chaine de la Selle. The land area is 27,560 square kilometers which makes Haiti slightly smaller in size than Maryland. With a population of 10,485,800 people the distribution is relatively even. However, there are higher concentrations of people located along the coastlines. (CIA, 2017)
Other communities must learn to extend a helping hand. Individuals must learn to respect the community through compassion, concern, and unselfishness. Instead of sharing media of the tragedies in these Caribbean after Hurricane Matthew, if possible, visiting the various island countries would help to safeguard the interests of our selves. In Audre Lorde’s “The Master’s Tools will never dismantle the House” she states, that “Interdependency between women is the way to a freedom which allows the I to be, not in order to be used, but in order to be creative. This is a difference between the passive be and the active being.” This idea needs to be extended to a global perspective. Too often the governments care about the power that comes with the political system and dismiss the idea of togetherness. When the university was preparing for Hurricane Matthew, there was little talk about praying for the other island countries that had already been affected by the natural disaster. It is unfortunate that these island countries weren’t a focus on campus however that comes with the mentality that has continuously been instilled in the minds of people and government for years. Instead, some people of our community have created memes about how the hurricane hasn’t affected Florida. They are blind to the blessing of Hurricane Matthew not directly affecting us as a
In 2010, Haiti; a Caribbean country located on the island of Hispaniola, suffered a 7.0 magnitude earthquake which left the normally joyous people devastated, and the land, destroyed. Only six years after the paralyzing natural disaster, Hurricane Matthew struck the vulnerable nation plagued by poverty, leaving hundreds dead and “12.9% of the country’s population in need of humanitarian assistance”. Humanitarian assistance. As humans; ready, willing and able to help Haitians in need, public school systems fortunate enough to teach students who think of those less fortunate in the world, should not repress their desire to meet, help and experience the beautiful Haitian culture. The group of students at Wachusett Regional High School interested
Some of these critical issues caused major problems then should have been addressed prior to the hurricane many land. The delay by both the Governor and Mayor led to overwhelming issues relating to evacuating. Mayor Ray Nagi refusal to give the order to evacuate, but rather use shelters to house Katrine victims from departing the area. The citizen of Louisiana was unaware of the severity of the storm and they trusted their State leader to ensure the safety of the people. When it came time to get the people out of New Orleans the chaos of the disaster made providing help extremely difficult. Organizations like the Red Cross and Salvation Army were responding to the disaster had no real execution plan, the shelters were in disarray and no logistic
The French and their slaves populated the island of Haiti during the 18th century. In the late 1700’s, the slaves revolted against the French and began a thirteen-year war for their freedom. This war began the significant problems for Haiti. Today, Haiti suffers from malnutrition, low standards of living, and poor literacy, which Haiti still faces today.
The people of New Orleans, Louisiana believed that it would be a storm like any other, nothing to set this Hurricane apart from the others that they had dealt with over their lives living in their beloved city below sea level. Unfortunately, that proved to not be the case and indeed it would be a storm they would remember for the rest of their lives.
From the start life has always been a battlefield for me and my family. In Haiti my father had studied to become an engineer despite his poor upbringing and my mother had worked multiple jobs to help support the family. Life in Haiti had already been tough but after a coup d’état and an election there was finally hope that Haitians would have to live under a repressive government no longer. The new government created hope which was then solidified when Duvalier announced his candidacy, by this time he was already a well-known physician that took part in many public health campaigns. My father remembers when Duvalier was elected, with promises of rebuilding a broken country and the happiness that followed, but this did not last. Shortly after
Ten years ago, on Aug 23, Hurricane Katrina was born over the warm waters of the Bahamas. Alice Jackson was interviewed about the storm, “I could see the house next door turn into a living, breathing monster, as the wind and pressure pushes the house out and in like a breathing creature.” Hurricane Katrina, created above the warm blue waters surrounded the Bahamas that destroyed many homes and took many lives.
Recently a devastating tragedy has happened. Hurricane Matthew tore through Haiti the Bahamas and parts of the US. The storm was crucial. Both ABC News and the washington post reported the Hurricane. The washington post talked about the hurricane's impact on the US itself. ABC news focuses on Jacksonville forida itself.
