Holden Caulfield Character Analysis Essay

Holden’s desperation for friendship causes him to turn against the people around him because his actions lead continually lead him into with rejection. For instants, Holden shows an effort to gain attention and sympathy from Stradlater by letting him borrow his hound’s tooth jacket and agreeing to write a composition for him even though Stradlater goes on a date with Jane, someone who Holden has strong feelings for. Rejection comes into play after Stradlater reads the composition of his dead brother’s baseball glove, and angrily tells Holden that it's no wonder he's getting expelled: he does not do anything "the way you're supposed to”(Salinger 46). Stradlater rejection affects Holden because he subconsciously feels that he is never good enough and that he’s pathetic. After the two of them got into a fist fight over Jane Holden is so isolated, he turns to Ackley, his neighbor who he can't stand and continuously calls a “phony.” Holden says after Ackley won't even help him that he “feels so lonesome, he wishes he were dead”(Salinger 50). Holden goes to call someone but then realizes that he has no one to call. When Holden was “giving old Jane a buzz…” he quickly hung up, claiming it was because he “was not in the mood,” but he can't deal with confrontation that might end up causing awkwardness, rejection, or emotional pain. It is Holden pain of rejection that causes him to feel frustration in the world, leading him to his depressed state of mind.

In J.D. Salinger's novel The Catcher in the Rye, the main character, Holden Caufield, describes in detail the parts of his life and his environment that bother him the most. He faces these problems with a kind of naivety that prevents him from fully understanding why it is that he is so depressed. His life revolves around his problems, and he seems helpless in evading them. Among others, Holden finds himself facing the issues of acceptance of death, growing up, and his own self-destructiveness.

In the novel Catcher in the Rye, by J.D Salinger, the main character Holden Caulfield is a sixteen year old boy who defies society and pushes himself away from society. While he pushes himself away, he starts getting the title of an antihero. The qualities of an anti hero that Holden possesses include the of lack heroic traits, defies conventional codes of behavior and is not a villain. Holden, possesses all 3 of the main qualities to be classified as an antihero.

During the novel, The Catcher in the Rye, author J.D. Salinger brings Holden’s pessimistic, antisocial personality to life through what he says, how he says it, and through the characters he meets. Salinger bases Holden’s expressions off of the culture of the 1950’s, his own personal dialect, and the everyday occurrences of Holden’s life in mind. J.D. Salinger manipulates the diction, uses syntax to criticize others, and controls the character interaction and dialogue in order to create the protagonist, Holden Caulfield.

Adolescence, this is a time where you figure out who you truly are. This soul searching leads to self realization. Holden Caulfield from The Catcher In The Rye by J. D. Salinger, has trouble accepting himself. Throughout his days he would put on a cap just to be someone else. It is his get away place, a place of isolation. A way for him to seclude from the world and become someone he isn’t. This is relatable to numerous teens. Though Holden could be described using numerous adjectives, Holden's character can be perfectly described as ignorant, a liar, and a slacker. He is ignorant because he does not learn from his mistakes. He is a compulsive liar. Finally, he is a slacker because he avoids work. Holden is just like countless people out there who do not apply themselves. You see, Holden could be smart. He could be successful. He just doesn’t have the motivation or ambition to do so.

Although he doesn’t have any friends in this place, he stills wants to have a feeling of leaving and saying goodbye. This is shown when he says “What I was really hanging around for, I was trying to feel some kind of goodbye. I mean I’ve left schools and places before and places I didn’t even know I was leaving them. When I leave a place, I like to know I’m leaving it. If you don’t, you feel even worse” (7). Holden doesn’t have any connections to people in this place, and this makes him sad. Constantly feeling abandoned and alone contributes to his feelings of depression. Immediately after leaving his school in the middle of the night without waiting for his brother to pick him up at a later date, Holden asks the cab driver to take him to a bar in New York city. Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger is a story about the trials of life and the toll it can take on the psyche. I believe that Holden Caulfield is an under credited hero. He is a teenager forced to grow up in a time of turmoil with severe emotional handicaps placed upon him by family, friends and life in general.

One of the greatest American Literature writers, J.D. Salinger, was familiar with a rough childhood by experience. He was able to parallel his experiences to the experiences of Holden Caulfield, the protagonist in The Catcher in Rye. In this novel, Holden experiences conflicts that most youth are not familiar with. The conflicts in Holden Caulfield’s life are caused by various forces and circumstances.

Holden told me to how he reacted after the death, “I slept in the garage the night he died, and I broke all the goddamn windows with my fist, just for the hell of it.” (pg. 21 pdf) He was 13 when this death occurred and he mentioned that his parents were going to get him psychoanalyzed because of what he did. After breaking all the windows in the garage, he tried to break the windows on the station wagon with his already broken hand. This shows how sad and down he got about his brother Allie dying. Everything in life was going well for Holden, family wise, and then a death happened to someone who Holden enjoyed a lot. Another girl Holden talked about in our session is Sally Hayes. The night before Holden makes a date with Sally, he has a prostitute named Sally come to his room. He just left Pencey, so to me, this is his way of letting out some sadness and anger. Holden says he didn’t do anything with her because he wasn’t in the mood anymore. This shows that some depression is coming into his activity level. Holden told me about what him and Sally did on their date. They first went to a show called The Lunts. During the show, Holden said Sally saw a boy she knew named George and he went to Andover. “I sort of hated ofl Sally by the time we got in the cab, after listening to that phony Andover Bastard for about ten hours.” (pg. 69 pdf) Holden told me. He went on to say that they went ice skating at Radio City. After ice skating, Holden explains how he wanted to run away with Sally. She kept saying no because they were still children. He told me that he told her “You give me a royal pain in the ass, if you want to know the truth.” (pg. 72 pdf) At this point, both of them hated each other. Holden said he apologized over and over to her but he ended up just leaving her at the rink. This shows how he can’t keep their relationship in a good place and his mood changed out

Psychology is a respected field that can introduce insight on the human mind and give an explanation on human behavior. Psychoanalytical analysis can be used to dissect the mind of characters in literary works. A famous psychoanalytic theorists Sigmund Freud is famous for his many contributions to the study of the human mind.

Change is an essential component in the continued success of the human race and thus important in the development of society. As such, society expects people to constantly change and adapt. Readers typically expect to see the development of characters throughout novels, or other pieces of literature. In the novel, “The Catcher in the Rye”, J. D. Salinger deviates from the normal progression followed by most novels by characterizing the protagonist as an individual undergoing temperamental changes and uncertainty throughout the novel. This novel is known to have attracted criticism from numerous reviewers from all time periods, who tend to make the argument that the novel 's main protagonist, Holden Caulfield, does not develop at all throughout the course of the book. However, this is not the case as Holden grows and develops through the book, recognizing specific ideals from the environment that is around him and responding to them. These reactions towards change are seen through Holden 's discovery of himself, relationships with other characters and the actions that he decides to take in given circumstances throughout the book.

Jerome David Salinger’s only novel, The Catcher in the Rye, is based on the life events shaping main character, Holden Caulfield, into the troubled teen that is telling the story in 1950. The theme of the story is one of emotional disconnection felt by the alienated teenagers of this time period. The quote, “ I didn’t know anyone there that was splendid and clear thinking and all” (Salinger 4) sets the tone that Holden cannot find a connection with anyone around him and that he is on a lonely endeavor in pursuit of identity, acceptance and legitimacy. The trials and failures that Holden faces on his journey to find himself in total shed light on Holden’s archenemy, himself.
