J.D. Salinger is best known for his character Holden Caulfield, who is recognized as a symbol for rebellion and anguish. He is rebellious because he wants to fit in but always ends up doing the opposite thing. He also in anguish because of his emotional distress. Holden really liked this girl named Jane who was going on date with his roommate Stradlater. When Stradlater comes back from the date he tells Holden all about it. This brings out the first sign of anger that Holden has. He try’s to punch him in the face but Stradlater dodges it and gives Holden a bloody nose. This makes Holden depressed even more. Later that night Holden sneaks out of his dorm and runs away to New York. On the train, he meets a very attractive looking woman and starts talking with her. She tells him that she has a son that goes to Holden’s school. Holden lies to her and tells her how great her son is and how he is super popular. Once again, Holden is lying to get what he wants. Holden is on his way to New York but he is on a bigger quest. He has been really wanting to lose his virginity and he thought if he makes this women feel good he could have sex with her. In this part of the book, Holden brings out the devious side of him. He shows that if he really wants something he is going to try to put his full effort to get it. He trys to ask her on a date but she declines him and gets off the train. When he arrived in New York, he got a hotel room. He tired to call this hooker that this person recommended to him. She also declined him. When Holden was depressed, he smoked a lot, which caused him to sleep less. At this point in the story, Holden was trying to keep it together and not have an emotional breakdown. He was having a hard time getting used to New York and he could not stop thinking about Jane.
