Holden Caulfield is the protagonist and the narrator of The Catcher of the Rye. Thus, this teen uses a first-person narrative to narrate his story. Also, he thinks most of adults are phony, hypocritical and superficial. To justify this fact, quotes from him and other characters in the story. Example, here is a quote that does not critic anybody in the novel; it explains a word Holden hates: ‘‘Grand. There’s a word I really hate. It’s phony’’ (Salinger 14). Also, the two next quotes are religion critics from Holden: ‘‘I can just see the big phony bastard shifting into first gear and asking Jesus to send him a few more stiffs’’ (Salinger 23). ‘‘Catholics are always trying to find out if you are a Catholic’’ (Salinger 146).
