The Canadian government has implemented measures to increase the availability of in home care givers in Canada. The laws that have been created have allowed for many people to become fully pledged Canadian citizens. Many of the people coming into Canada to fill in in house care givers vacancies have been predominantly Pilipino women. These women are given the promise of become a Canadian citizen. After an extensive and costly application process these women from the Philippines are placed in the homes of their employer. The migrant work must live within the employers home for a period no shorter than two years, and must maintain only one employer in the two year waiting .l period. Only once the two year commitment is fulfilled is the migrant worker allowed to apply to Canadian citizenship. Many of these workers come to canada with the promise of have social upwards mobility through the program. However, although the program sounds promising the reality of the program is to

The Canadian government has made a trade agreement with the Pilipino government to have mass exportation of humans. Essentially, it can be argued as a form of human trafficking. Contrary to the laws promises the Filipino women are experiencing horrific conditions of work that no Canadian citizen would accept. The Canadian government allows for the exploitation of these people. The law ensures that the migrant workers cannot leave there employer or live separately from their employer. Essentially, the rules create a system in which the workers are worked for tremendously long hours and cannot complain or dispute their labour conditions. The Canadian government is forcing a trade-off of a set of basic human freedoms so that migrants can increase their economic possibilities in Canada. Additionally the migrant workers are receiving wages far below those paid to live-out
In this documentary about Mexican’s workers experience in Ontario, Canada, Min Sook Lee addresses the issue of the Foreign Temporary Worker program. Specifically, El Contrado demonstrates how Mexicans come to Canada in order to work during several months under bad working conditions. Those workers have to leave their family constantly in order to help them financially. They work 8 months a year, which means that they are home in Mexico only for 4 months (El Contrado). Maximo left his family behind; unfortunately, he cannot even for four months in order to see his son as he is illegal in Canada. As those Mexican workers, Maximo experienced bad working conditions. Here he briefly talks about working conditions and explains how he wanted to get
In this person’s article, he/she discusses some of the hardships which many immigrants, may face in Canada. This person talks about how they at first had utopic dreams about Canada: that Canada did not have any “human weaknesses” and that they would find a job and be happy, free from racial discrimination. However, in the viewpoint of the author, this is far from the reality. The author warns about the difficulties of finding a job in Canada: difficulty in communication between the immigrant and the job supplier, lack of trust with the immigrants history in their home country, the fact that many of the jobs are not advertised in places where people can access them, and racism in choosing which person should get the job. Because of this sources personal experience, he/she warns others not to come to Canada. This is the reason that this source was created is to warn other people from facing the same dangers the author did in Canada. This author ends his/her article by saying that “work” is not something you can depend on to find in Canada. The main economic issue regarding immigration that this source addresses is that it is often very hard for newly landed immigrants to get jobs for many reasons. This is a very important problem as the main reason that the immigrants are let into Canada in the first place is to find a job and help Canada's economy.
Cundal and Seaman discuss the many ways in which the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) is abused and the effects of this misuse on the workers. Temporary Foreign Workers (TFW) are working jobs that should be classified as long term positions, not short term. This incorrect classification affects a worker’s salary, healthcare plan, pension, vacation pay, and sick days. Cundal and Seaman also address the ways in which TFW are more susceptible to employer abuse than other workers. Temporary Foreign Workers must apply for a Labour Market Opinion (LMO) before switching employers, which can take up to five months; most workers cannot afford to live without a source of income for this length of time. This usually compels workers to keep serious issues private. Many workers are also uninformed about their basic rights, which often leaves them exposed to mistreatment or abuse by employers. Cundal, an immigration lawyer in Calgary and Seaman, a human rights and civil liberties researcher wrote an unbiased and fact based article using a wide variety of sources including articles, reports, and newsletters. Cundal and Seaman provided an extensive reference list in addition to footnotes to support their writing. The authors not only address the human rights issues faced by TFW’s, they also identify ways in which these issues can be resolved. Cundal and Seaman however, fail to provide information on how many TFW are affected by employer abuse and exploitation. This information is

The commission recommended imposing a $10 duty on each Chinese person seeking entry into Canada. Furthermore, in this situation Canada did not have the most preeminent immigration history, as the Chinese workers had to pay for their own food, clothing, transportation to the job site, mail, and medical care, leaving barely enough money to send home, unlike their white co-workers. One of the many resilient moments in Canada’s immigration history had been the modern immigration from Syria to Canada. The Syrian immigrants had fled their country as a cause of a 5 year civil war, the country had corruption, lack of resources, and many disasters. Normally Canada accepts approximately 250,000 immigrants each year, in order to compromise to the current state of Syria, Canada has agreed to increase their yearly allowance of immigrants to accommodate more Syrian refugees. The effort made by Canada had been recognized internationally as a very helpful act, that will subsequently help many of those in need. Furthermore, in the past Canada had been the most welcoming to immigrants who came to populate the settlements around East, West, and central
Today, the situation is not getting better. After 9/11, people come from other countries are seen as a threat. Canadaian not only afraid that they could take the jobs, they also seen the migrant workers as potential criminals (Street, 2003). In fact, white settlers came to Canada as foreigners. After the white settler society been established, the racial hirearchy was created (Razack, 2002). Migrant farmers worker have no insurance to protect them in case they become sick. When Canadian worried about the migrants might become criminals, the workers’ safty and health are under the risk. Migrant workers are taking jobs that Canadians do no want to do (Chowdhury). Most of the workers come to Canada without knowing their rights or unable to argue because of the language. J4MW was established for the migrant workers to educate them to understand that they are treat unequally and help them connect with the agency which can help them. J4MW organized mant labour movement in Canada which link to race, gender, sexuality and class. Their supports helps migrants to practice the organising skills and inspire many other eqity groups.
What would it mean to stay in a stranger's house and take care of someone's daily needs that he/she requests help with? Could some random high schooler go and do some form of action like this without a high level of nursing requirements? These qualities perfectly describe a home health aide. A home health aide is someone who takes care of elderly people in a senior citizen's home and assists with cleaning, cooking, and even helping senior citizens bathe, as well as completing their everyday tasks. Home health aides can become emotionally involved in their work as well. Some of the most important things to keep in mind when becoming a home health aide are educational requirements, job opportunities, and salary range, not to mention the professional duties, job benefits, and the job drawbacks. Becoming a home health aide is not
Much of Canada’s economic success has been at the hands of immigrants and migrants. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Canadian government advertised free land to European farmers, in an attempt to persuade them to begin working in Canada. These immigrants went on to contribute to the country’s vast agriculture industry, which much of the economy is based on. Still to this day, people around the world look to Canada as the land of opportunity. Many immigrants and refugees choose Canada as their new home because of the job opportunities available to them. However, not everyone interested in working in the country is able to stay there permanently. Despite this, those still interested in working for Canadian businesses and companies may
There is an dilemma which is bothering the people in the Canada is regarding the exclusive sections on business travel and flow of skilled temporary foreign workers. Under this the credential recognition in light of a section states that there will be no limits and no testing of foreign skilled workers who are amount these 12 countries and can easy flow in and out of the countries without ant restrictions. As we all know that Canada is a global country and global doesn’t only mean that it is developed nation but global in terms of expecting new people and immigrants from the different parts of the world. That’s why Canada is called multicultural nation. But the process of entering or immigrating into Canada is not an easy job. Canada government has its strict rules which it implements for the foreign people to come and stay in Canada. The temporary work sections of the TPP are raising strong concerns from labour unions that warn it raises questions about on-the-job safety and the protection of Canadian jobs. That’s the hidden but the real fact that if there is a free flow of skilled labour from different countries it is going to adversely affect the jobs of the local people in Canada. And moreover there are already so many immigrants into the country and recently Canada has also given shelter to about 25,000 Syrian refugees into Canada which has already increased the burden on the government to accommodate them with all the basic facilities and if in the near
The Temporary Foreign Workers allows Canadian employers to hire foreign nationals to fill temporary labor and skill shortages when qualified Canadian citizens or permanent residents are not available for the migrant. (Canada, Canada, & Branch, 2015) Migrant workers can stay in Canada for 4 years and later apply for residency since it is not available for them at that time. There are four examples of Temporary Foreign workers: Skill workers are migrant workers who get selected to immigrate to Canada because of their work experience and skills. Un-skill workers are migrant workers that get selected to immigrate to Canada but do not have any experience or kills. Seasonal workers are migrant workers who work in farmland and gardens who only work for that certain time in the season. Live in/Live out caregivers are migrant workers who resides in and provides childcare, senior home support care or the disabled without supervision in the private household in Canada.(Reserved, 2011) I’ll briefly explain the impact on migrant workers through an article by Donald Payne, an Academic article, Government article and Assigned weekly reading. Also though out the stages of Micro, Mezzo, Macro and Transnational level.
In the past decade, Canada has been known to be a labour market which is increasingly providing placements for migrant workers to come to Canada from all around the world with limited work permits. In order for migrant workers to enter to Canada they have to definitely have good work skills and experience. The sad reality towards these hard working immigrants is that, besides the fact that they have financial issues in their home country is that they come to Canada with high expectations but instead are getting paid a ridiculous amount of eight dollars an hour. In a personal opinion, it is very devastating the amount of work these people have to go through to maintain their families stable and happy. Coming to Canada many hope to come to an amazing home and job but instead are treated like slaves. It is very disturbing to have known about this just recently about a home country which I live in, I did not expect Canada to treat immigrants like this. Even though, many immigrants are still thankful to even have a chance to come to Canada and work but they definitely still deserve to be honored a reasonable amount of pay and health insurance due to their hard work. Briefly, immigration polices about migrant workers will be further explained in connection to Donald Payne’s article and of course Social Service Worker Code of Ethics.
Another form of resistance that supposedly fits the genuine resistance criteria of Scott is the creation of formal civil society organizations (CSOs) or advocate groups. Tungohan’s research explains that Filipino Live-In Caregivers try to negotiate their victimhood using political actions and mobilization as their Coping Strategy to Victimization (CSV). Yet, a lack of coordination and programmatic goals, agendas and strategies exist within the existing CSOs or advocate groups for Filipino nannies and domestic workers in Canada. They too have differing nature and preoccupations. For example, the National Alliance of Philippine Women in British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec, the Migrant Workers Family Centre in Hamilton, the Migrante Canada, the
Domestic and caregiving work dates back 150 years and was/still performed by racialized women migrants in Canada. Care-giving is often viewed as ‘low-skilled’ work thus women especially from South-East Asia are exploited financially, psychologically as well as physically. One of the ways that many of these women have the opportunity to gain Canadian Permanent Residence/Citizenship status is through the Live-in Caregiver Program thus leaving their own families behind. The global care chain looks at the exchange of care labour and resources from underdeveloped to developed countries through the employment of women from poor backgrounds into middle-class homes as caregivers (Parrenas). This paper will focus on how global care chains (the
This literature review starts with a survey of theories of international migration, the emergence of Filipino Labour Diaspora, focusing on the role of the Philippine state. Consequently, it examines the role of Canadian state in attracting FLCMs to work as domestic workers in Canada. Lastly, it examines the role of the market in perpetuating gender role and victimization in labor diaspora.
