Home is what I consider, Harrington Park (HP), New Jersey. A town that is about one square mile long, with only one traffic light with one school that is Kindergarten to Eighth Grade. My parents often call it “Shangri-La” a “harmonious valley.” A microcosm of society was my foundation. A town that is made up of mostly Caucasian about 70% to about 29% Korean. Average of 2 parents, with 2-3 children a dog filled a white picket fence. I was raised a Catholic, the church right across the street from the school. My mom made my lunch every day, and had a classic family dinner almost every night. My parents always taught my siblings and I to be kind and nice, to celebrate people’s differences, to be tolerant and compassionate. I have always had a strong extended family supporting me and guiding me the whole way. Not only present for holidays and birthdays but day-to-day dinners, games, recitals, etc. I don’t know where I would be without their constant support. My town was not very culturally diverse, but my Korean friends paralleled my upbringing. The Korean children would enter the school speaking no English and by years end be fluent. They would assimilate into middle class America at least during the school day. After school most of the Korean kids when to more school like Kumon, Huntington Learning Center and then music lessons. Some of my friends would only be here for 2 years, they would say American schools were not as advanced and would have to stay ahead if going
