Good Essays

There are many populations that are medically vulnerable and underserved globally and they change depending on the region on the world you are in. However, one medically vulnerable and underserved population can be found in all regions on the world, is the homeless population. Savage, Lindell, Giepsie, Lee and Corbin state that “About 1.2 % of the US population experiences homelessness at any given point in time, with a lifetime prevalence of &7.5% within the general US population” (2008, p. 469). Homeless people are of no particular ethnicity or race. Homelessness does not discriminate. There are many factors that cause people to end up homeless. According to Moses claims “Falling income and rapidly rising housing cost have forced an unprecedented number of the lowest income families- seven out of ten nationally- to spend half or more of their earnings on rent” (2016, p. 23). Since so much of a person or families income is going to housing there is very little left for food or medical care. Many people end up homeless because they need to eat or their children need to eat. The people who fall through the cracks are the people who make too much money to receive assistance but not enough money to make ends meet. Some homeless people are homeless by choice in a way, for instance runaway adolescent are often homeless because they left home for one reason or another but are not old enough to work to support themselves or cannot find a job that pays well enough to support
